First, it must offer the finest of individual training to every student who desires music study either as a vocation or an avocation. Second, it must offer students and faculty members many programs of the great music of all times: that their sense of values may be im- proved, and their future enjoyment of music be materially increased. It is difhcut to say which of these functions is the more important. The first is certainly of great importance, and the standard of instruction must be of the highest. However, the second purpose includes and supplements the first. Studying music pre-supposes a desire to produce music. Music cannot exist until it is heard. An intelligent listener is one of the most necessary parts of a successful musical performance. The day has come in America when no person can lay claim to a liberal education and admit a lack of interest in the fine arts. The Music School at lYashhurn College aims to supply the musical needs of XYashburn students all along the line, and welcomes a closer contact with all students so that their needs may he known and each good thing lead to something a little hetter. There are now sixteen paintings of merit in the permanent collection. 35.000 worth have been given this year. Miss Barbara Ripley pre- sented a valuable collection of mounted butterliies to the museum. Any day in the week a visitor may find Mulvane Art Museum open. Saturday is one of the busiest days. as the teachers of rural schools bring in their students so that they 1nay benefit by the exhibitions and the ex- planations of them which Mrs. Fayeben VN-'olfe gives at the Museum. Many Topekans visit the galleries on Sundays. During the week XN'ash- burn students are busy sketching. painting. etching and hammering brass. In the evenings classes are conducted for teachers and other Topeka women. There have been ten exhibitions in the galleries this year. These were tine collections of paintings. etchings and wood block prints by widely known artists. The March exhibit was perhaps one of the best. Japan- ese prints. etchings by Arthur Heintzelman. George XVales and a host of other prominent artists, sketches and woodblock prints were dis- played. The annual spring exhibition at commencement time contains only the students' work. A prize is offered for the best sketch done without supervision. Qnce a month, a local lecturer gives a talk pertaining to some phase of art at the Museum. The Topeka Art Guild co-operates with XVash- burn College in the Management of Mulvane. Mulvane Art Museum is a member of the American Federation of Arts and the American Federation of Museums. In order to belong to these organizations, certain requirements have to be met regarding the non-commercialization of exhibits. Much care must be taken in the wrapping and packing for shipment the pictures in an exhibition. The Art department at XYashburn today is vastly different from that which Mrs. L. D. Wfhittemore started with two students in 1912. The classes this year were large and the faculty has doubled in number in the past two years. The spirit of the department, however, is the same as in its infancy,- To make work happy and rest fruitful is the aim of Artf' Page 90 V ' e Q --, 4 ,-,,-,-4... M., ,-L... 1 7 r P SEQTWW in . L. V Washburn Little Theatre UNDER the capable supervision of Miss Florence Heizer the VVash- burn Little Theatre has progressed nicely and has provided enter- tainment for Topekans and VVashburn students this year. The iiirst group of plays was presented in the Mulvane Theatre on the evenings of December 14, 15, and 16. At this time the Manhattan Players, under the direction of Miss Reima Rosenthal, appeared in o11e of the four one-act plays which were enacted. VYashburn students presented f'On The Shelf, by Christopher Mor- ley, Nettie, by George Ade, and Carnival'l to a highly appreciative audience. Helen Bunger. jean St. John, Charles Elliott. Susan Snyder, Virginia Price, Delbert Godlove, Phil VVahle, and Richard Hunter played in 'fOn the Shelf. This play is a fantastic sketch in which the characters in the books of an author step out of their bindings and live their lives on the stage. 'fNettie was a vivid act showing the methods a gold digger employs in Udiggingf, Esther Mullin was 'Nettie' and Richard McDermott, Earl Dodge, Richard Lancaster. James Mohler and bl. C. Tillotson were cast in the other roles. Carnival displayed the amusing happenings of a carnival company who decided to sell their show equipment and live in the country. The rustic. prospective buyers afforded the amusement. Those who took parts in the Carnival were: Richard McDermott, Esther Mullin, Richard Hunter, Louise Page, Dexter Glunz, Louise Kittell, and Leon Askren. The Manhattan players presented The Valiant, a portrayal of the last hour of a convict who concealed his indentity in order to keep his mother and sister in ignorance of his crime. The visitors from Man- hattan did some excellent amateur acting. The Washburn students who played Nettie presented the play to a Manhattan audience March 24. If Miss Heizer with the help of the members of the Little Theatre groups had done nothing during the year other than the bringing to Topeka of the Theatre Guild Repertory company which presented The Silver Cord, by Sidney Howard, at the Grand Theatre February 2, Topekans and 'XYashburnites would have been grateful. The Silver Cordl' was supported by the Topeka Art Guild and was enthusiastically received. Topeka was fortunate in having the opportun- ity to see a play of this character presented by a New York Theatre Guild Repertory company composed of professional actors. Miss Heizer is to be con0'ratulated on the success of her efforts ut forth in brinffinff it here. The field house, which will cost approximately 3185000 will be a mas- sive stone structure, three stories in height, designed to seat 5.500 per- sons for basketball games. The building will be located south of Rice Hall. Its overall size will be 131 feet by 196 feet. A standard size basketball court, 50 by 94 feet, and large enough to provide two courts for use in high school tourneys, will be on the main floor. An elevated section encircling the floor. except at the south end. will seat approximately 2.500 persons. An unusual feature of the field house will be the provisions for con- cert and stage performances. Under the main balcony at the sides are showers for men and women, locker rooms, two handball courts, a kitchen, and an emergency room to care for the injured. The excavating for the athletic bowl has already been completed. The bowl, designed to seat 15,000 persons, is built south of Thomas gym- nasium in a natural depression. Plans for it were drawn up by Prof. Cleveland S. Loper and his students. The XYashburn bowl is U-shaped, and will inclose a standard quarter- mile track with a 220-yard straightaway. Inside of the track will be the gridiron. Only the seats on the east and west sides will be completed this fall. These however will accomodate 8,000 The bowl will have an overall length of 650 feet and width of 400 feet. Five men, however, responded to Coach Vlfynnels call for players and he soon molded them into a hard driving, fast playing team. The team gave the Oklahoma University and College of Emporia teams a hard run for high scores honors during the season just passed, and although the season was not very successful in the number of games won it was highly successful in that it reinstated tennis as an active spring sport at XN'ashburn. The building of several new courts next year should give an added incentive to turn out for tennis practice: thus VVashburn's tennis prospects are very bright. Intra-Mural Sports INTRA-MURAL athletics were instituted in VVashburn with the hope of stimulating an increased interest in college athletics. In the 1927 all-school track meet, the Gamma Alpha track team easily defeated the opposing organization entries and won the Keller-Ream Sport Shop trophy. XN'ith a number of the men who won the championship for them last year back in school this spring, they were expected to press other teams closely for this year's championship. Kappa Sigma won the baseball championship for its second consecu- tive year in 1927. A great deal of interest was shown in this tournament as the final outcome was doubtful up to the last game. The Phi Alpha Delta nine appeared the strongest contenders for the championship of the 1928 tournament. VVith a team composed of experienced basketball men, the Kappa Sigma quintet defeated all contenders for the intra-mural basketball championship during the winter season. It won all of its games, although several of the other teams gave it a number of hard battles. Page 118 9 4 I w ' Tiiiggi,tgnngggi.T.4.-.-g4LT1:: C C WA.-A. HI KL!
