This is our sixtieth year, and we have a lot of which to be proud. Washburn is not a building, it is a commitment from the faculty and students to shape us into the proud, successful school we are. This year the Wahian staff has recognized the school as a group, not individuals, and placed everyone in one People Section. After working together we want to be remembered together. We've tried to record the memories of our years here. For us, these pages are filled with memories of both the good times as well as the bad. Happy sixtieth anniversary, Washburn High School, we won't forget you or the friends we've made. 1. Myhr's bakery helps cake-eaters celebrate sixtieth with a donation. 2. Underclassmen show spirit. 3. Seniors anticipate graduation. Title Page 3 Welcome Week Wows Washburn Welcome Week, which is designed to welcome Freshmen, new students, and staff, began on September 9th and ended September 13th. Everyone was treated to a hearty dose of Miller spirit. This year's Welcome Week festivities were kicked off on Monday, by the traditional Pep Fest. Tuesday saw the Millers sporting sunglasses and hats, ranging from cowboy hats to sombreros. Wednesday, the halls were packed with Washburnites wearing turbans and boxer shorts. Thursday, was dubbed nerd or Freshman day. Millers dressed in high waters , taped up glasses and saddle shoes to show their spirit. Friday was the day seniors had been waiting for since they were freshmen, Rent-a-Senior Day. For a mere two bits freshmen could rent a senior for a day. The seniors took their masters out to breakfast at Perkins or Embers. The freshmen made their slaves dress up in funky clothes, such as babies, transvestites, and yes, even a flasher ! The week ended with a rockin dance, performed by No Hands Clock, and A Few. The hip tunes possessed almost everyone to dance with complete craziness! All in all. Welcome Week was pretty darn groovy. 1. Tereska Buzek bares all! 2. Ooh baby!”, says seductress, Lynn Murphy. 3. Freddie contemplates Geometry. 4. Nate tries a different angle on dating. 5. Welcome Week 7 STAND CLft OF [)£- £FTT db '86 m 8 Homecoming Millers Reign at Homecoming Coronation kicked off what turned out to be a long homecoming weekend. It was held Thursday night and although it rained, the show went on. Helen jones was crowned queen and her princesses were: Tereska Buzek, Katie Anderson, Michelle Burgess, and Sue Pikal. joel Groethe was pronounced king and in his court were: Bruckner Johnson, Joel Nelson, Mark Thurner, and Jay Miller. They were entertained by three talented musicians: Doug Schmidt, Sanford Jones, and Nicole Montgomery. On Friday afternoon, the annual pepfest was held to get the crowd psyched. The cheerleaders led the bunch with rousing cheers, the Millermates danced energetically, and the Student Council did their own version of the Newlywed Game , with the freshmen emerging as the winners. All that energy was then converted into the feet of the students who attended the dance that night at school. The band of the evening was Kasmir who provided a number of popular dance tunes to get down to. The spirit continued through the weekend until Monday when our postponed game was played on the new field. The game proved to be a victorious one. The Millers triumphed over the Indians by a score of 6-0, which culminated a fun-filled weekend. Homecoming 9 10 Homecoming 1. Enthusiastic Varsity Cheerleaders. 2. A Letter to the Class of 1986 Well, high school is now at an end for us seniors, and we are now looking at a thing called real life. Washburn has been a place of emotional and intellectual growth for all of us, and we've learned skills that will help us survive in life. But reality is still intimidating, and you may be tempted to run and find a safe path in life. I urge you to reconsider. Ask yourself, What do I want to do with my life? If you want money, and lots of it, ask yourself, If I'm making this money to lead a happy life, then why am I stuck in this job that only makes me miserable? If you really want happiness, then do what you really want to do. (But don't take it too far; you need to eat, too.) With this, I wish the Class of 1986 only the best of luck for the rest of our lives. We're a great class, and I know that we will all attain whatever goals we set for ourselves, lust remember to look to the future while living life to it's fullest. Seniors 47 WHS: Sixty Years and Still Strong As Washburn High School completes its sixtieth year in existence, it can look back on those sixty years with a great feeling of pride. From the very beginning, Washburn was looked up to by the other schools in the metro area as being one of the best schools for education and sociability. Sports is another area where we have been strong throughout the years. Washburn has dominated in football, hockey, soccer, and baseball at various times in the past sixty years, and we have several trophies to show for it. This school has also been the proving grounds for several famous people. James Arness, Dave Moore, Ron Glass, and Dorothy Lyman all graduated from Washburn. Washburn has undergone several changes in appearance recently as well. These changes include an expanded athletic field with lights, a new sign in front of the school, and a remodeled lunchroom. The physical changes are the only changes at Washburn. The school is still an academic power as well as an athletic one. If the first sixty years are any indication of what's to come, Washburn has as much to look forward to as it does things of which it can be proud. 1. The new sign of the times. 2. MacOuarrie Field at last revealed! 3. Shed a little light on the subject! 3. 48 WHS History 1. II was new. but it wasn't nice. 2. We've sure come a long way. 3. Booths well worth the wait! 4. One obvious candidate for this was Mr. Frank Ario, a highly admired teacher by both students and faculty alike. Mr. Ario has been teaching here at Washburn for 29 years in the areas of: Philosophy, Economics, Government, and Current Issues. Many students eagerly await becoming seniors so that they can enroll in his classes. Positive comments about him and his teaching ability have been passed along from student to student, year after year. Mr. Ario has resided in the Washburn area for almost 30 years, along with his wife and their four sons, all of whom are Washburn graduates. Outside of his classroom, Mr. Ario finds time to coach some of Washburn's young men. In the fall, he coaches men's soccer and baseball in the spring, both of which seem to excell each season. To add to his contributions to the community, Mr. Ario was chosen president of SMAAC, the South Metro Airport Noise Action Council. This organization is trying to control disruptive airplane noise by working with local, state and federal agencies. Earlier this year, Mr. Ario was honored for his work in the classroom by the Minnesota Business Foundation for Excellence in Education. We, as students at Washburn, would like to thank Mr. Ario for enriching our education. 1. Mr. Ario, a respectable veteran of World War II. 2. Roughing it out with the boys in a game of football. Staff 107 Japanese Class Added to WHS For the first time at WHS a Japanese class was offered. Twenty-five Washburn students took advantage of the opportunity to learn syllabaries, to sample sushi, and to try their hand at oragami (a form of Japanese art). The class was taught by Dr. Phyllis Highland Larsen, who lived in Japan for twenty years. She made the atmosphere in the class enjoyable from the beginning by speaking Japanese to the students so they would become accustomed to the sound. The students were thrilled with the class, for it was different than anything they had ever taken before. Senior Connie Wright, who was taking Japanese as well as Spanish exclaimed, It's challenging to learn the 3,000 characters of the Japanese, it is so different than the standard American alphabet. 1. Sarah Raymond practices to make perfect. 2. A few of the characters that make up the Japanese written language. 3. Ms. Larsen teaches to an attentive class. 4. Dave King makes figurations in the air. 108 Japanese Class Featuring Mr. Myers This year the Wahian is featuring Mr. Myers, the man behind us Washburn drivers. Mr. Myers did not always want to be a teacher. He graduated from high school shortly after the Korean War, and entered the armed forces. After that he held various occupations including a fireman on the railroad and a truck driver. Towards the end of the 1950's he decided he would like to be a teacher. He enrolled at St. Cloud State where he received his bachelor degree. He then went to the University of Minnesota to achieve his master's degree in social studies. Mr. Myers taught eight years at Ramsey and he has been teaching at Washburn since 1971. Mr. Myers feels that Washburn is the best school that he could ever teach at. He feels that the students and the staff are just great to work with. When Mr. Myers is not teaching he enjoys playing a round of golf with a friend or vacationing on his ranch in Montana. The students here at Washburn wish to thank Mr. Myers for all that he has done for us! 3. 4.- 1. Mr. Myers referees at a pepfest. 2. Mr. Myers tells us about his years at Washburn. 3. This year's team, although quite young, nevertheless competed successfully in several meets. Competing with other suburban and metro schools, our Millers debated the environmental issue of waste disposal during each of the twelve rounds. After preparing for weeks the Debators finally put on their thinking caps and forged into a battle of the minds. The successful season ended with hope of a bigger and better future for Washburn High school students in the world of Debate. Row 1: A. Myers, C. Carte, D. Watkins Row 2: Advisor R. Rogers, M. Acfvisor Jim Colby was assisted by engineers from Honeywell while he presented the membership with many enlightening tasks. Club activities included a paper airplane flight contest, structural engineering (toothpick bridge), and now two year old robotics project (the robot arm or armitron). The experience Jets provided those involved will remain prominent and hopes for a larger involvement in the future are hopeful. A final addition to the Jets program was weekly refreshments, so join while the punch is cold!, before you're left thirsty. Row 1: R. Faison, Advisor J. Colby, D. This year, seven seniors were chosen to travel to Spain, Finland, Chile, Denmark, Brazil, Japan, and the Philippines as exchange students with the Rotary International Youth Exchange Program. The seniors will leave starting as early as June and as late as September. To become an exchange student with Rotary, each applicant had to fill out an extensive essay questionnaire with pictures of their family, home, and hobbies. Next, all the applicants attended a preliminary interview with Minneapolis Rotary members. If the students were chosen from the first interview, they went to tire District interview where they were either chosen as exchange students or turned down. Out of the nine who applied, seven lucky students made it. Next year they will learn new languages, cultures, meet new people, and become a part of their adopted country. Bill Freeman, and captains, Stacy jones, Anna Hirdler, and Alescia St. Dennis. Their season started in April and lasted until March. Early last spring the Millermates had a big turnout for their clinics. Out of the many who went to the clinics only an elite thirty were chosen. Throughout the summer the squad worked every weekday morning. As practice got more laborious, a sense of unity swept over the team, they kept their chins up and toes pointed. Their first performance came at football previews. After the other dancelines stumbled on and off the field our girls came gliding out on winged feet, showing all there that Washburn Women are truly superior! The students came to America looking for a broader understanding of how other cultures compare to their own. When the students were anticipating their stay in America, they had many different ideas of how we Americans looked. For example, Cordon Andrews, a 6'6 basketball player from Tasmania, thought he would be the shortest player on our team here at Washburn. During their stay in America, the students have developed a taste for many of the fine foods that we serve here. Miriam, who is from Brazil, has taken a liking to brownies, marshmallows, and ketchup. Other favorites were hamburgers and ice cream. We here at Washburn hope that the students had a great time in America, and that they learned alot. 2. 1. The year began with a controversial staff initiation which ultimately lead to the school-wide prohibition of formal initiations. Despite our initial setback, an issue was cranked out every four weeks. The quality and quantity of the paper was significantly improved upon due in large part to the abundance of story material created by the students and administration. We would like to extend our gratitude to Washburn for its support, to Stitzel and John Milton for their guidance and inspiration, and to the talented Grist staff for a great year. With Mr. Phillips' astounding technical training, and student teacher Holly Littlefield's theatrical guidance, the crew and cast set out for six weeks of enlightening rehearsal. Unfortunately, due to the depressing tone of the play, the six weeks seemed to last an eternity. Luckily for us, the performance dates finally arrived; just in time to save our sanity. Actually, the play turned out quite well, even though the audience attendance was poor. There were many memories made during the rehearsals for the Crucible, some we'll never forget, and some we'd like to forget. 2. 1. Gel a new pair of shoes Jeff lorgensen!” 2. Stage Crew 139 School Spirit Discovered During Snow Week In order to get rid of those winter blahs, we had our annual spirit week — Snow Week — from January 28th to the 31 St. On Monday, things were started off with an exciting pepfest. The senior women and men showed their style and ability by winning the eating contest and both of the tug of-war contests. To wrap things up, the Millermen performed one of their famous dances. During the week, the students were able to show their spirit through dress-up days. There was grub day, toga day, disco-magic day, and everyone's favorite - Hawaiian day. The fun slowly came to an end on Friday night at the Snow Week dance, with live music and entertainment provided by Ipso Facto. 1. An enthusiastic junior class. 2. A race against the Ditzler's. 3. Many acts had auditioned for this extravaganza, but only fifteen made the show. The production consisted of rappers, dancers, a magician, and an assortment of bands — including a drum duet which has become a recent tradition in the talent show. The acts rehearsed for weeks in order to bring us the polished performance we attended. This year's football team proved to be a good team even though injuries hurt them. The team was also small in number, so people ended up playing as many as 3 positions during one game. The team's record this past season was 2-4 in the conference and 2-6 overall. Even though the Millers did not come out ahead in many games, they scored many points throughout the season, making it a memorable one. 1. Joel Nelson checks the players before the big play. 2. Jimmy Williams takes off his helmet to concentrate on the game. 3. Simpson Sarton's quickness outruns his opponents. 4. Andy Bion makes a big tackle before the whistle is blown. 4. 150 Men's Football 3. 1. The team huddles before the big game, Greg Rudolph is a little excited. 2. Men’s Football 151 Women Spike to Success This year the volleyball team was second to Roosevelt in their conference. Although they didn't return to the state tournament again this year, they did make it to the quarter-finals in regions, losing to Park Center. Next year the volleyball team will have four returning starters out of six. Congratulations to Birgit Lillehei, Chris Peterson and Karen Anderson who made the All City Team for 1985. julie Burns received the Honorable Mention award for the All City Team. With two of the All City players being Juniors this year, the volleyball team should be State contenders next year. 1. Julie Burns makes a great effort to get the ball. 2. A routine warmup takes place before the big game. 3. Evelyn Rhines spikes the ball as teammate Julie Burns looks on. 4. Karen Anderson bumps the ball up to a teammate. 152 Women's Volleyball 5. 1. Women's Volleyball 153 Men's Soccer Rallies to State This year's men's soccer team had a great season! Their season started out in early August with captains practices, which lasted for a week under the hot August sun. These practices are usually run by the returning seniors and consist of fundamentals, scrimmages, and a little bit of running. But now it was time to get under way, it was time for Frank Ario to take command and get his troops together to go to war. Coach Ario started out by having two practices a day, one in the morning from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and then back at 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. This went on for two grueling weeks known as Hell Week and for a just reason. After these two weeks Commander Ario cut the team to 35 players to go out to Minnetonka where they played Cretin, Cooper and Minnetonka. They came back with 2 wins and cut the team to 25 players. Washburn's mens varsity soccer team was now ready. With the help of senior captains Mark Thurner and Geoff Elfstrum, Coach Ario was now ready to do battle. One of the only two games lost was on a 90 degree day up in White Bear Lake where the Millers were shut out 2-0. But Washburn licked its wounds and went back into action. The next big game was at Minnehaha's Super Soccer Day. The Millers were ready for another big battle and it was a huge battle indeed. The final outcome was a 1-1 overtime tie. Probably one of the biggest highlights was when Washburn defeated the undefeated team of Kellogg. The game was played at Kellogg's home field in the mud and muck but the stronger team prevailed. The Millers scored two quick unanswered goals in the first quarter against a said-to-be-unstoppable team. After the first quarter it was all Washburn from then on. Kellogg came back with a goal, Washburn then returned the favor leaving with a 3-1 upset over a frustrated Kellogg team. The Millers Finished their season with an outstanding 16-3-2 record. Millers had the claim to fame of being City Champions, Regional Champions, and one of the 8 teams in Minnesota to participate in the State Tournament. Congratulations to Bob Cowan, Geoff Elfstrum, Karl Krueger, Mark Thurner and Bobby Bergfalk who made the All City team for 1985. Lee Alaniz and Jay Miller received honorable mention on the 1985 All City Team. Congratulations to Bobby Bergfalk who made the 1985 All State team and was voted by his teammates MVP for the State Tournament. Bobby Bergfalk was also named Gatorade soccer player in Minnesota. Mark Thurner and Geoff Elfstrum were named honorable mention for the 1985 All State soccer team. Congratulations Millers! 1. Throughout the fall season, the Washburn Women's Soccer Team worked hard together and proved to be successful. For the fifth consecutive year, they captured the City and Regional titles, and from there made their appearance in the State Tournament. They showed great improvement as the season progressed and they supported each other well with team spirit and a lot of enthusiasm. There were also many underclassmen which should strengthen the team in upcoming years. The following players earned recognition on the All-City team: Nancy Totall, Colleen Clancy, jeannine Johnson, Beth Tourtelotte, Suzy Stearns, Kris Johnson, and Katie Anderson. Special recognition was earned by Nancy Totall who earned a place on the 1985 All-State Team. 1. Enthusiastic soccer pl.ivers capture Region title. 2. Beth Tourtelotte eagerly gets set for a shot. 3. Swingers Show Their Style! Overall, with a lot of hard work the Washburn women's tennis team had a good season. The team was led by senior cocaptains, Libby VanValkenburg, and Helen jones. The season brought many exciting highlights and fun times together. There were also many promising underclassmen that will return next year to continue the success. Recognition goes to the following seniors who made All-City: Libby VanValkenburg — singles, Stacy Bergerson and Amy Schirmer — doubles. 1. Senior Libby VanValkenburg aces her opponent with her serve. 2. Senior double partners Jennel Eveslage and Helen Jones take each other on. 158 Women's Tennis Women's Tennis 159 Swimmers Keep Their Strength Throughout the Season The women's swim team had a good season this year even after some disappointing losses. After pulling four wins and only two losses in the city, the Millers came out strong in the city meet by placing swimmers high and getting second place behind South. There was a major change this year for there were no divers and that changed the scoring greatly. The swimmers ended the season by getting fifth place in Regions, placing surprisingly ahead of many tough regional competitors. 1. Janet Raugust flies towards the finish. 2. Shannon Barnhardt awaits the gunshot. 3. Carolyn Owen pulls out ahead in the last length. 4. Ann Juntilla relaxes after a tough swim at regions. 160 Women's Swimming «' 5. 1. The men's and women's cross country running teams began practice during humid August days. Running alongside the creek and lakes the runners stuck with it until the cold days arrived in the fall. Soon enough the long underwear came out of the drawers and hats and mittens were pulled on. (However since the majority of the team joins the cross country ski team they love it!) The guys and girls form a close determined group and depend on each other for support in their demanding races and practices. Along with team-mates the teams were fortunate enough to have Mr. Wald as head coach and two new assistants. Lloyd Ness, (affectionately called LLLloyd by the team), a student at the U who was looking for a coaching internship, found his place on the team. Another student at the U, Tom jacobs, a former Washburn student and runner, assisted the team as well. Working hard and with a lot of tough practices the guys had a very successful season; everyone lowered their times and reached personal goals. In addition to running long, hard miles the team had a lot of good times after practices as well. 1. Paul Higgins gels ready for the race. 2. Captain Tim Austrums passes the two mile mark. 3. The cross country runners (?) get a tan. Opposite page 1. Rick Dinesen sprints in for a fast finish. 2. Setting up before a race at scenic Lake Nokomis. I. Craig Robinson psyches up for his race. 4. Congratulations cross country women! Running with an inexperienced team, (only one return ing senior), they ran to achieve impressive times. Logging the miles daily with the guys they worked hard to greatly improve their times. Although the team didn't win any city titles they dropped their times as the new runners gained experience throughout the season. The team, which consisted mainly of juniors, looks to be a strong one for the '86-'87 season. The girls as well as guys were coached by Mr. Wald, Lloyd Ness, and Tom Jacobs, a new coaching staff. The combination was successful, Lloyd added a great deal of enthusiasm to the cheering section, becoming famous for his phrase, good effort. Both runners and coaches had a good season and both the girls and guys have great memories. 1. Jessica Harshbarger goes all out to the finish line. 2. Captain Chris Hauer contemplates the upcoming race. 3. Tracy Swanholm smiles at Mr. Wald's words of wisdom. Opposite page 1. Captain Tim Austrums watches as Jenny Gleason cruises by. 2. Fall Candids 171 i K'U'n w vuy a i Millers Battle Through Tough Season The Millers under Coach Louis Boone and Captain Joel Nelson got off to a slow start this season but began to pick up the pace. The record may not show it but the Millers were in every game. The Millers toughest game was against Minneapolis North, the third ranked team in the state. The Millers came out behind but only by a slim seven point margin. It's better to be playing state ranked teams and maybe losing a few more, than playing weaker ball clubs and not getting prepared for regions as I feel we are, stated Joel Nelson. The team's starting lineup was equal in ability and as the season progressed they learned to play together as a team. To show this equality each player had their good games, with Mike Berwald scoring his top game of 22 points, Wilbur Marshall with a couple 18 point games, Billy Hill a 12 point game, Sean Lofton, a 16 point game and Joel Nelson with a 23 point game to top the scoring off. As once said, The Millers can hit you from all angles. 1. Darnell White skies for two. 2. Wilbur Marshall takes a shot over the Roosevelt defense. 3. Mike Berwald lays the ball in the net. 4. It was a real struggle to try and uphold the 'Tradition. The team was starting over with only four returning varsity players. The team consists of one senior, five juniors, four sophomores, one freshman, and one eighth grader. Coached by Judy Dockendorf. She is the one coach who could bring this team around in a couple of years. The team is growing and progressing, and in a few years will be unbeatable again. 1. Taking a foul, the hard way. 2. Karl Krueger, Greg Fischer, and Geoff Elfstrum show that teamwork does pay off. Miller Hockey — This year's hockey team proved to be tough competition to all of their opponents. The hard work began in early November when the players hit the ice to get in shape and to get ready for the challenging season that lay ahead. The days which were especially exhausting were those on which the team had dry land training for an hour before they then boarded the bus for practice on ice. Smooth As Ice! The hours spent working together helped the players come together to be a closer team. With only four returning seniors: Greg Fischer, jeff Kasperek, and co-captains jon Olson, and Geoff Elfstrum, the team was provided with the leadership that it needed. The juniors and their experience gave a lot to the team as did the faces of a few lucky and talented sophomores. It was evident throughout the season that the team had the support of the school behind them. Rowdy fans packed the bleachers at most of the games. The cheering and enthusiasm helped the team complete their season victoriously. 3. 178 Hockey 4. 1. Center Bobby Cowan faces off. 2. Terry Gustafson receives the puck from |on Olson. 3. Hockey 179 Men's Skiing Skates to Regions. The 1985-86 season held a lot of changes for the men's team. Both extreme warm and cold temperatures cancelled races and altered the courses. The skiers rarely raced the same course twice and had to remain flexible to changing conditions and unpredictable race courses. This year's season was a very tough one for the Washburn men. Like the women's team many of this year's varsity racers did not race varsity often last year. This year they had to compete against experienced racers from South High School. During the winter break about twenty Washburn skiers spent five days at Skisabella, a ski camp, with some of the best racers of the state. This time together as a team helped develop friendships and an appreciation for home cooking. The men's team skied a very good season and looks forward to the coming years to continue their winning tradition. 1. Jonn Coskran and Cletus Daglish-Schommer show the true spirit of skiing, snaring ski poles. This year with changes in form, skiers needed longer poles and thus there was continual trading all season. 3. Captain Jeannine Johnson finished her race inspired by the hope that non-racers hadn't inhaled all of the brownies. 4. Joni Gustafson and captain Chris Hauer could always be counted on for needed support. 5. Captain Tim Burkhardt pushed hard to get a lead in a frenzied mass start. 6. Throughout the season Mr. Wald was always at the race finishes with a congratulation or a comforting hug. 7. Blaine Auer thought about his upcoming race and dreamed of a large magnet drawing him up the hills. 2. 180 Men's Skiing Track Please, Said the Women's Ski Team. The Washburn women continued their long tradition of a powerful team. Washburn's team skied well in the region meet with four skiers placing in the top ten. Captain Anna Coskran finished fourth overall to qualify for the state meet. The 1985-86 season was a building year for the Washburn team. Pressure was placed on the skiers who were racing for their first year to maintain Washburn's tradition of a strong team. Although skiers practiced hard every day it was not uncommon to witness a quick snowball fight or a light whitewashing take place during a practice. Skiing is an individual sport but close bonds quickly develop on the team. The skiers spend a lot of time together at day long Saturday races, practices after school, and the buses to and from the ski courses. The Washburn team is special because of the pride the skiers have in themselves, their coaches, and their team. The team thanks Gary and jesse Wald for their expert coaching, continual support, and anxious pacing at every race. 1. Dave Beck, Rick Dinesen, and Ann Bjelland enjoyed the sunny day and the ongoing race. 2. Jessica Harshbarger showed the concentration and effort demanded in a ski race. 3. However, sometimes the team pushed back. 7. The ski team had a lot of tun snow fights and Cletus Daglish-Schomer was often in the center of them. 182 Women's Skiing Women's Skiing 18 3 Swimmers Drown Out Competition If you happened to have been driving around the Southwest area between the months of December and March, and you heard shouts of delight, you must have heard the Washburn men's swimming team. Southwest is home to the mighty Millers swimming team, and this year the team had a pretty terrific season. Even with a few disappointing losses the Millers came back fighting at every meet. Steve Simondet has the best record on the team. This was also the first year in many that WHS beat Edison, who holds a 17-1 record. Coach Dave Jensen also returned for his 3rd season to guide the Millers to another outstanding season. The 1985-86 team had high hopes of maintaining strength, because of their many talented varsity gymnasts. Presently, they remain undefeated in their conference, and many are beginning to look ahead at the State Tournament in March. Besides having a successful season, the team got together often, which not only made the season fun, but a great experience. 1. Senior Captain, Kris Wagner shows her talent on the uneven bars. 2.
