Haupert Looking back over the year, I am reminded of all the anxiety and chaos which accompanied us and probably every staff preceding us. After eleven years with Cliff Johnson, the Wahian staff had a new advisor. Now, Not only were the members new and inexperienced, but also their advisor. We worked together, learning from our mistakes, and receiving great support from Mr. Carlson As I see the finished product coming together, I am really proud of us, and I see all the hard work we put into it and the patience that went with it. The time and effort has paid off, and I’d like to congratulate everyone on a great job! A thank you to all who contributed, especially Davis Banks Studio, for without their services and equipment, this book would not be possible and also to Dave Wood, our cover artist. To Mr. Carlson, I’d like to give a very special thanks. He has put forth so much energy and enthusiasm; I would say his first year as VVahian advisor has been a success. The week started out on the right foot with a wild pepfest. It started with the crowning of Tom Fletcher and Katie O’Brien, Snow King and Queen. Then the Senior Women and Junior Men pulled their way to tug-o-war victories. The pepfest ended with the Millermen’s great performance. Wednesday was masquerade day with everyone dressed up in weird costumes. On Thursday everybody acted like it was warm and sunny outside by dressing in shorts and flower shirts. On Friday the school went back in time to the 50’s, with faded blue-jeans and penny loafers, to bobby socks and poodle skirts. That night the spirit continued with the sounds of the Rockafellers. Over all, snow week did a good job of taking all those winter blues away for awhile, anyway. 77 Sadie It was a knee-slapping time on November 9. 1984 as 197 couples gathered tor the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. With Luke, the square dance instructor, leading all the couples in one of the best Hoe-Downs of the year, while the other hillbillies tried their skills with the various games for prizes. Everybody was kept in line, or should we say, was kept together, by the patrolling sheriffs, which were in great numbers. The dance started around 8:00 and wound down around 11:00 with the naming of this year’s Daisy Mae and Lil' Abner. Amy Woldum and Randy Robertson, respectively. Dean Larson won the best beard award. tmm Millwheels On the night of January 30 and 31, Washburn showed off its talents in Millwheels. This years performance was a very diverse one, with many exotic and exciting acts, ranging from Russell Merchant all the way to the millermates. Hosting many entertaining acts were this years M.C.’s, Mike Fugle and Tim Elness. One of the highlights of the show was a monologue by Peter Brauer, where he had everybody in the aisles when he talked about Mr. Jones and the Lunch Ladies. Odd Couple Washburn’s spring play of 1984 was Niel Simon’s comedy, “Odd Couple”. The play was a great success due mainly to the full-hearted performances of stars, Marshall Onsrud, Scott Parsons, Josh Siegal, Liz Jordan, and Georgeanne Keller. The play showed the everyday problems and conflicts between a slob, Oscar Madison and Mr. Clean, Felix Unger played by Josh and Marshall respectively. The performances were reflective of the many hard weeks of dedicated rehearsals. The drops and props were very effective because of the drive given to all involved by Mr. Phillips, in his second year. k 4T Hojmc|: imingQj9f r not dajiW e(li|t, rains on ®LCt-dB r: we a k Hl hn Bn t auu HBr their flP B' tuxedos. As the couples mounted the escalators to the ballroom, the laughter and sounds of the band Cruisin’ drew them closer to the excitement. Upon entering the halls, lines for picture taking and coat hanging were overwhelming with couples attired in fancy dresses and decked out in suits. Inside, dancing, snacking, and socializing were among the many sights seen. With the help of the band, which played a variety of songs, the night was a success. It was a night to remember for all who attended our first spring dance. 84 Prom All aboard! With crew and passengers ready to rock the boat, the Josiah Snelling set sail. The romantic love boat provided 159 couples with a beautiful, romantic atmosphere. The band “Prophecy” helped to make May 11a memorable night by playing a variety of music and luring everyone into dancing. From 8:30 to 11:30, dancing feet echoed throughout the prom boat. Well dressed for the occasion, Washburn showed off its style and class. This prom proved itself to be a fun, exciting time. 85 89 94 Welcome Week Welcome week, the traditional starting point of the year, was again a whopping success. The week was kicked off by a big pepfest getting everybody into the spirit of things. Tuesday, Dress-Like-a-Freshman Day was marked by people roaming the halls with lunch boxes and “flood” pants. Next was Dress-Like-the Opposite-Sex Day. Thursday was Senior Slave Day in which the freshmen got to buy the rights of a “lucky” senior. The seniors picked up the freshmen and took them out to breakfast and then followed them around every which way all day long. The Welcome week Dance, usually held on Friday, was postponed to the following Friday because the football team had a game. Even with the week delay the dance was a huge success with the new band, Kindergarten. 95 Upon arriving at Washburn in the fall, students saw a great deal of change in the exterior of the school. McQarrie field had been torn up and a new one was being built. On the inside the halls and the lockers had been freshly painted. % Rebel Without A Cause Cast The Victim Chris Cunnington Buzz Gunderson The Gang- Trixie Jenny Abdo Scooter Moose Helen Georgeanne Keller Millie Ellie Ellis Mogan Crunch Biff Judy Brown Amy Del Main John “Plato” Crawford Ben Grandquist Lynn Ray ... Gary Fortier, a former coach at Marshall- U, was faced with the difficult task of replacing long-time coach George Wemier. He brought with him inspiration to the team and the desire to never quit; and quit they never did! The old football field was gone this year when they returned, and it remained that way throughout their season to make way for the new Mac-Quarrie field. This hampered the team because they were never able to play a home game. Although the team had little success in the record books, they achieved what some consider to be more important than winning-THE DESIRE TO WIN!- 133 With much confidence, this years volleyball team began their season. Having played together the year before, they felt confident that they could go beyond winning the City Title, and dreamt of going to the State Tournament. At t hat point, many people scoffed at this and said it was just that, a dream. Having gained even more determination, they went about proving these people wrong by beating one team at a time. Four seniors were appointed to the All City Team: Sue Sundem. Kim Green. Debbie Davis, and Kathy Davis. Regions came quickly and they practiced in earnest. Everyone knew what needed to be done, so, even though the workouts were hard, they all knew what could come from all this work. They came out explosively and didn't give up one point without a fight. They never gave up and proved to be the better team. Their dream had been fulfilled, it was time for the State Tournament and they were in it! ♦ 15.15 nyxatu 11.15.15 South 5.16.15 Htiwy IA OrniMi IS.IS.IO South y HOW I E. Rhine . K. Wegmun. The key Henry 160 to the success of our team is the strong competition within the team, said one runner. Huw 1: J. Kruntz. J Gu tdfcon, T. Cole, A. Hooglxrg, Row 2: Coach G. Wuld. C. Hauer. K. These practices showed the possibilities of a very successful season. Their schedule proved to be a tough one, many of their games being decided as the last seconds ticked off the clock. Many of the challenges that were thrown at them were well handled by the starting line-up, and the depth on the bench. Mllttk As the hockey team stepped on the ice early this winter, they had new coach A1 DeWolf and several new players. The team saw an initial lack of experience hut adjusted quickly to their competition. The Millers faced several of the states top hockey teams and showed that they could skate with any team. Taking on such opponents as Southwest, Kennedy and VVarroad, to name a few, the team could control tough opposition. The season was halted all too soon as they lost an emotional game to Breck. Coach Dockendorf By Winter Break they were in full stride and at the top of the ratings. Going into the Holiday Tournament they knew they were up against some of the top teams. They also knew that they weren’t going to give up without a fight. They took an optimisitc attitude and began to reach their goal. Their goal was reached when they beat host Hill-Murrav for the Championship. Their season was cut short with the loss to North in Regions. Looking back on their season, they know the experiences they endured will help them to be better athletes in the future. The 1V team had a very good season as well. They maintained their poise in close games and more often than not, they came out on top. Having the toughest schedule possible, the Miller Women began disposing of one opponent after another. The team consisted mainly of Seniors, which contributed to their many successes. Their game was very well rounded. having the ability to score both from the inside and the outside. Their defense allowed them to stay in the lead when their offense was slow in coming. TWELVE WINS AND ZERO LOSSES. That was the story for the 1984-85 men’s cross country ski team. Each victory, from Lake Harriet to Wirth Park, was a stepping stone to their final meet of the year in Grand Rapids, “STATE”. Led by coach Gary Wald, the skiers had no trouble winning all dual meets, the city relays, the region five championship and eighth place in the state meet. 158 Row 1: Coach Cary Wold. J. Dees, M.
