Black History The month of February was Black History month. Many people participated in making it a valuable learning experience. Each day on the morning announcements various pieces of information were given about famous black people. Besides the daily recognition, the annual Black History Auditorium took place on February 16. The show began with three emcees: Greg Brown, Lctitia Andrews, and Liz Johnson. Liz read a powerful poem about black girls considering suicide. Then there was entertainment for the eye. Kevin Jenkins, head of a local modeling agency, coordinated the modeling show which featured nine of Washburn’s young ladies. Following that performance was one by three young men from Washburn called Remember My Name.” They told of the many black achievers in history. The final presentation was given by Warren Boolcs of the Mixed Blood Theater. He portrayed the life of Martin Luther King. Black Achievement 1983-84 the theme of the program was put across well to the students of WHS. 18

Sadie Hawkins If y’all remember the week of November 18, a lot of hootin’ and hollerin’ went on The Grist Staff began working on the Sadie Hawkins dance at least a month in advance by gaining donations from sponsors around the Washburn community. Planning went on until Sadie week was upon us. On Tuesday, the senior class held a senior homeroom to vote on the 1984 Daisy Mac and Li.l Abner who were announced as Lolita Doty and Dave Coleman the night of the dance. Blue bow ties were also collected by the most persuasive women of the school from the men who just could not refrain from speaking to them. The men got a chance to show their skill of collecting bows on Wednesday as the women wore orange ones. The actual dance was held on Friday. November 18 on the First floor of the school. The 202 couples attending were open to many activities. Knee slappin’ square dancing with an authentic caller was supplied in the girls' old gym while the boys old gym was full of hillbillies testing their skill at games such as Tip the Cat. Free Throw Toss, and the Shooting Gallery. All the women showed their aggressiveness just by grabbing a man and going to the dance. The real aggressive Daisy Mac's even tied the knot with their Abners with the help of a Dogpatch Marryin' Sam. The night drew to a close as awards were presented for best costumes, best beard, and cutest couple. Sadie is probably looked upon as one of the funnest dances here at Washburn because it is so nonformal and casual. It was enjoyed by all once again.
