ACTIVITIES Welcome Week 1983 began the school year the right way. It started off with the freshmen buying seniors for the day. On this day the freshmen ordered their seniors around and made them do many things including wearing leashes, sweeping the way, and even chanting “Freshmen Rule!” As the week went on the fun mounted. There was a pepfest welcoming the freshmen and the returning classes. The pepfest consisted of a “fair pie eating contest, the Millcrmates introducing themselves, and a game of “Freshmen Feud”. On Friday the welcoming of Washbur-nites was finalized when 550 people attended a dance with music by the Lamont Cranston band who were in the farewell tour. 7 Homecoming The Homecoming activities took on a different style this year. The coronation of the 1983 King and Queen was held on Wednesday evening instead of Friday afternoon during the course of the Homecoming day itself. The decision for this change was the subject of much debate around school for a time before the Homecoming events. As the week proceeded, excitement mounted. The big day began with a pepfest to psyche up the crowd as well as the football players. The annual Homecoming Show revealed the variety of talent found here at Washburn from dance to music. Then came Miller time! After a rough beginning of the season, the football team turned itself around and won the game that meant the most. The team pounded the Patriots 33-6. The week and the day came to an appropriate ending with the Homecoming Dance. A sound system was provided by Bill Doyle for one of the highest attended Homecoming dances Washburn High School has had. Royalty J. Carlson. I). Clark. T. W . Heync. T. Konigson. F Clark 9 • Semi In spite of the cold, blustery. March 25 weather, many people braved the elements and traveled to the Minneapolis Athletic Club. The cause for this gathering of Wash-burnites was the Semiformal Dance. Music was played by Les Rue as the 123 couples attending took their turns on the dance floor. Slow songs were an obvious favorite making it difficult to actually dance. To find a spot on the dance floor and keep it was one’s best bet. The night was a success as it allowed the girls to hunt down the guys that they have always dreamed of going to a dance with. 12 Prom Every Washburn High School dance is a big event, but the night of April 29 was a milestone for many. This night brought 135 couples together at the Northstar Ballroom for Prom 1983. For many this was their Senior Prom, a night that will be looked on as a major part of their high school career. Everyone looks back on their Senior Prom at some point down the road along with all of the wild things that came with it. From getting all dressed up and dining at a variety of elegant local restaurants to dancing to the music of Willie and the Bees, the memories of this night will be filled with smiles in years to come. The cast consisted of freshman Julie Nelson and junior Diana Schmidt as the outside selves of the two women. Junior Heather Donaldson and sophomore Angie Thomson played the roles of the women’s inner selves. “Calm Down. Mother” concerned three distinctively different women played by senior Dasha Jcx, sophomore Marit Opstad. and sophomore Erica Spitzer who were living with problems women face in a modern world. The two one-act plays were directed by Stephen Phillips. The lighting design was done by junior Peter Maurelli and the costume coordinator was Erica Spitzer. The plays were very well done and offered the women eager to act at Washburn a chance for recognition. Black History The month of February was Black History month. Many people participated in making it a valuable learning experience. Each day on the morning announcements various pieces of information were given about famous black people. Besides the daily recognition, the annual Black History Auditorium took place on February 16. The show began with three emcees: Greg Brown, Lctitia Andrews, and Liz Johnson. Liz read a powerful poem about black girls considering suicide. Then there was entertainment for the eye. Kevin Jenkins, head of a local modeling agency, coordinated the modeling show which featured nine of Washburn’s young ladies. Following that performance was one by three young men from Washburn called Remember My Name.” They told of the many black achievers in history. The final presentation was given by Warren Boolcs of the Mixed Blood Theater. He portrayed the life of Martin Luther King. Black Achievement 1983-84 the theme of the program was put across well to the students of WHS. 18 Sadie Hawkins If y’all remember the week of November 18, a lot of hootin’ and hollerin’ went on The Grist Staff began working on the Sadie Hawkins dance at least a month in advance by gaining donations from sponsors around the Washburn community. Planning went on until Sadie week was upon us. On Tuesday, the senior class held a senior homeroom to vote on the 1984 Daisy Mac and Li.l Abner who were announced as Lolita Doty and Dave Coleman the night of the dance. Blue bow ties were also collected by the most persuasive women of the school from the men who just could not refrain from speaking to them. The men got a chance to show their skill of collecting bows on Wednesday as the women wore orange ones. The actual dance was held on Friday. November 18 on the First floor of the school. The 202 couples attending were open to many activities. Knee slappin’ square dancing with an authentic caller was supplied in the girls' old gym while the boys old gym was full of hillbillies testing their skill at games such as Tip the Cat. Free Throw Toss, and the Shooting Gallery. All the women showed their aggressiveness just by grabbing a man and going to the dance. The real aggressive Daisy Mac's even tied the knot with their Abners with the help of a Dogpatch Marryin' Sam. The night drew to a close as awards were presented for best costumes, best beard, and cutest couple. Sadie is probably looked upon as one of the funnest dances here at Washburn because it is so nonformal and casual. It was enjoyed by all once again. I.oliu and Dive Millwheels On January 18 and 19, the Auditorium was filled with people attending Millwheels 1984. Washburn's annual talent show. The name of this year's show was “The Street Scene. Elaborate sets added to the theme. Jugglers, mimes, models, singers, dancers, and bands all added to the night of entertainment. The labels of singers, dancers, and bands do not fully describe the performances of the night. The singers and bands had unique styles ranging from jazz to rock. The dancing displayed some of the many personalities here at WHS. The Snow Week Snow - Icc • 20 below Windchill. How do you feel? L o you need a break? Sixteen hundred students at WHS took a break with annual Snow Week festivities the week of January 16. We began Monday with an exciting pepfest which introduced winter sports, let the Millcrmcn strut their stuff, and finally, crowned the King and Queen. This year David Wright was voted the one with the best legs, Sharon Berry with the best guern. Tuesday transported students to Ancient Athens as some of the more courageous people wore togas to school. Wednesday we got to sec how the other half lives by dressing in clothes of the opposite sex. The Powder Puff football games never got a chance to occur because of the brutal subzero temperatures and windchills. which led us to Friday. Friday we escaped it all and the Hawaiian climate invaded WHS for “I Wish I Were in Hawaii day. That night Shangoya brought a little bit of Jamaica to Washburn with the band’s reggae beat. What a perfect way to end the week and keep the warm mood lingering in our minds for the few cool months that lie ahead. £32 ■ MNM UH.M )( )J I Sis III V «III Coo ynn m II. This was the team's second year in existence. Grist ROW I: P. Sutton. I). W'right. J. Petersen. J Burkhardt ROW 2: E Bjelland. K. Bach. K. Bergstrom. S. Weeko ROW 3: K Prince. J. Peterson. B. Not all Gristcr’s time is taken up working hard to publish the paper, but they also organize the rambunctious Sadie Hawkins Dance. The proceeds from the dance pay for all the costs of publishing the Grist. The Gristers have kept up the tradition of giving Washburn a superb paper along with an entertaining and fun dance. K Beving The Sophomore Baseball Team baited in a two win opener in a season filled with ups and downs. Playing with enthusiasm all season, they finished their season on a winning streak. They managed to outseore their opponents by 21 runs on the season. A new arrival on the Washburn sports scene was the Junior Varsity baseball team. Lacking challengers, the team had an irregular schedule. Throughout the season, the team provided an ample supply of reserves for the Varsity. The new team was a welcome addition to the spring sports line up. The Varsity Baseball team played impressively this season. They started out strong by winning five out of their first seven games and outscor-ing their opponents by a total of twenty-five points in the process. They finished the season off enthusiastically by defeating six out of seven opponents and advancing to the playoffs. This year’s girls badminton team was reintroduced into Washburn after a two year absence. They surfaced this spring as a young, inexperienced team. They were instructed by Nancy HaininR, an exciting new coach from Regina. Team captains, LcAnne Hrncir and Jenncl Evcslagc led the team to a sound beginning. ROW I L. Brandt. T. Host ad, K. Wagner. During these practices the players work worked on skills and started running to prepare themselves for tryouts. The season started with victories over the City teams which had only played the year before. It was because of this that the Millers looked to the sophomore men’s team and the suburbs for compe-tion. The team flew through Region play allowing no goals and scoring thirty-eight themselves. They then looked toward State. The team to beat was Jefferson, the returning State Champions and again rated number one. It was a good game with both teams scoring in regulation time. The Millers shut down Jefferson in the penalty kicks. They went on to play Irondalc in the State finals. It was at this game that they realized that Jefferson wasn’t the only though team in the State. They placed second in the State Tournament. The Junior Varsity team had a tough time finding teams to play. In the City Conference there were only two JV teams. To find games the JV team had to look to the suburbs. Since the City Conference wasn’t very strong, the JV team played much of the Varsity schedule, doing qui’c weii. Those hopes were crippled however, because of injuries sustained by the team. The 83-84 Miller team showed character and depth by bouncing back time after time.. Although the Millers had a slow start, they never gave in to their opponents. Drawing the number ten seed going into Region play, the Millers brought their fans to their feet in their first game with an upset over seventh seeded Totino Grace. Moving into game two against number two seed South at South, the team easily played their best game of the season Outrebounding and out hustling a South team that had previously beaten them twice, the Millers moved to the semi-finals. In a controllcd-typc basketball game, leading until the final minute of play, the Miller dream ended with a loss to a good Fridley team. The next night they finished fourth to arch rival Southwest. The sophomore basketball team, under new coach Calvin Boone, spent a year of frustration by coming short with a bad bounce here and there in nearly every game. Playing all the players in most of the games is sure to give these young men the experience needed to be a contributing factor in the coming years. This showed when the Millers took on conference rival North. It was their first conference loss and their last. After each game, the Millers showed improvement. They reached their peak in Regions where they captured the title for the fourth year in a row. The Millers also returned to play the Twin City game. Although they played well they came up eight points short. The team didn’t have much time to reflect on this because they were on their way to State. This was their fourth time there in four years. Unlike other years, they won their first game. They were 13 points down with two minutes in the game. They tied it and won in overtime. The Millers ended the year in fourth place, losing to a strong Edina team. The JV team did well this year. They had little trouble winning the City Title this year. This gave them a chance at the Twin City Title which the Millers had worked all season for. The Millers played a tough Hill-Murray team for the championship. Trailing much of the first half, they came back to win by a good margin. Out of twenty-four varsity sports, Washburn teams won eleven conference championships. More amazing still, the Men's Cross Country Skiing captured the conference for the sixth consecutive year. Girl's Gymnastics became the first Minneapolis team to win the Region 5AA meet and advance to the State Tournament. The rewards you can expect from life are only as great as the risks you are willing to take Dedication: This yearbook is dedicated to you, Mr. Johnson. All the time and work that went into it honor the 28 years you served Washburn High., The service you have provided, especially to us as Wahian adviser, was invaluable. You were misunderstood when you would offer your criticisms of our class in Senior Board. You challenged us in this way for us to try to prove you wrong, but unfortunately these challenges were often misinterpreted as simply dislike. As we got to know you and learned how you operated, we came to respect you. Our respect for you is great, but we rarely let you know. We hope that this surprise dedication can show that respect. Good luck on the P.G.A.. The 1984 Wahian staff ADMINISTRATION Burton. Donald 14. 19. 28 Jones. Birch 28 King. David 28 Mennes. Dawn 3. 28 FACULTY A Anderson. Joyce Anderson. Robert 34 Ario.
