I want to be one of the common herd, Not live in a sheltered way, Want to be thrilled, want to be stirred By the great crowd day by day. I want to live and work and plan With the great crowd surging by, Or mingle with the common man, No better or worse than I. Silas H. Perkins 2 6 Administration Principal W. Nelson Assistant Principals: C. Elias, D. Mennes, B. Jones The class of ’83 has been a credit to Washburn High School. As you join the alumnus of Washburn we wish you well and trust you will be proud of your school and represent Washburn in the community with pride. This has been an exciting year of change for all of us. The yearbook will be an expression of your high school education and help you remember your friends and activities. The entire Washburn faculty wishes you success and happiness. The Washburn Administration did a fine job handling the many problems caused by the school closings this year, despite the fact that major personnel changes had occurred. Wayne Nelson, who came this year from The Minneapolis Technical Institute, has proven to be a popular principal. Birch Jones was the new Assistant Principal assigned to Washburn. 8 Sincerely, Wayne Nelson, Principal Office Staff The office staff did an excellent job of handling the especially trying paperwork resulting from the new school plan. They kept communication open between the office and the rest of the school. HOW I: A. Simonson. L. Jones, K. Hudoiph ROW 2: M. Ramstad. B. Pedric, E. Carlson. S. Quigley, E. Engelhard Social Worker There are many problems involving students and their families. Our social worker does his best to help solve them. He also arranged for needy families to receive the goods collected during the Thanksgiving food drive. 9 B. Waller Counselors ROW 1: F. Voigt ROW 2: C. McKinnie. R. Treacy, V. Russell J. Donovan Robert Treacy - 1920-1982 Mr. Treacy arrived at Washburn at the beginning of this year in the mass faculty exchange caused by school closings. All students benefit from the numerous services offered by the counseling staff. In addition to giving advice and keeping track of credits earned, counselors provide an excellent service for students pursuing additional educational opportunities as they prepare transcripts and assemble various recommendations. Counselgrams and senior homerooms complete the ongoing services provided from this department. Jane Donovan, the Chemical Awareness Counselor, offers counseling to students who either have family members with chemical problems, or who themselves have problems. She leads support groups and an Alateen group. A new part of her job this year was helping athletes understand their commitment of not using chemicals while participating in athletics. He chose to come to Washburn to accept a new challenge in his thirtieth year as a teacher, coordinator, and counselor in the Minneapolis Public Schools. Washburn students and faculty, though knowing him for only a brief period of time, are better having met this unusual man. Nurse J. Jex Mrs. Jex has spent the past two years as a Nurse at Washburn. She alternates days between Washburn and another school, and is usually seen here a couple days a week. A lot of her time is spent keeping up student health records, along with the students not feeling well. Librarians Washburn can be very proud of its library. Its selection of books are consistently the present best sellers. Along with an abundance of educational references, the librarian staff is very helpful in finding materials and using equipment. n Lunch Aides The lunchroom cooks arrive early in the morning to prepare hundreds of lunches for hungry Washburn students. After three hectic lunches daily, they return the next day to start the process all over again. Changing menus and experimenting with different foods is a testimonial to their efforts. F. Pederson, H. Love, L. Kramer, R. Larson. W. Widga, C. Mildenberger. Mgr. F. Ballinger Engineers Head Engineer Marty Gavanda retired at the winter break after twenty-four years at Washburn. His dedication to the Washburn students and faculty was greatly missed. The entire engineering staff with their patience and understanding create the atmosphere to which the Washburn student body has become accustomed and takes for granted. 12 A. Burke, M. Gavanda. D. Ellenwood Special Education The Special Education teachers help students who are having difficulty in the area of reading and math. They also provide assistance to students having difficulty with mainstream curriculum. HOW 1: H. Banks, E. Persha ROW 2: A. I ehmeyer, G. Pudas. G. Dalasta The department operates out of room 312, and it provides an invaluable service to our school. The Work Coordinators help students who want to work while they continue in their high school course work. The program especially helps students who plan to enter the work force directly upon graduation. 13 Mathematics HOW 1: G. Hansen, E. Harter, K. Kielty, V. Muir ROW 2: J. Haugen. R. McNamer, B. George, J. Brown, J. Farrell, R. Pratt, L. Ritter Mathematics can be an important factor in a students future. The program here at Washburn recognizes that fact and is designed to give everyone that wants it a chance to develop this skill. Courses range from concepts all the way to calculus. Brand new this year are the math team, for those interested in math outside of school, and the math intervention program for those students who need extra help. English Because English is required throughout the four years at Washburn, many courses are offered to add interest and diversity to this valuable subject. The courses include mythology, Shakespeare, theater, humanities, newswriting, and A. P. English as well as standard English. All of these courses help to develop the essential skill of expressing ideas. ROW 1: P. Lyders, K. Stitzel, J. Yung ROW 2: A. Dahl. A. Walsh. G. Wald, R. Rogers, J. Anderson, G. Lykken, R. Wolk A large amount of today’s student population at Washburn will probably hold an office related job sometime in their lives. Business Our Business Department teaches some of the many skills needed in such a situation. These courses include accounting, several levels of typing, business law, consumer education, and shorthand ROW 1: G. Gudahl ROW 2: Y. Cram, C. Johnson, J. Wollan Social Studies Many benefit from the strong Social Studies Department. Beginning in ninth grade Civics, students are taught about the make up of our government. In tenth grade they move on to World History to learn the sequence of events in this area. As students enter their junior year, they are taught issues of U. S. History. Senior year, the most trying one, is when students take Government, Economics, and Current Issues. ROW 1: M. Boardman. L. Hopson ROW 2: R. Cersine, D. Strickland. G. Simonson ROW 3: M. Myers. G. Wemeier, W. Miller. B. Turnbaugh, R. Anderson. F. Ario 16 Science ROW 1: J. Baxter. J. Colby, H. Strobei ROW 2: Hornby, D. Lee, D. Henriksen, G. Tray nor, R. Carlson The high academic standing at Washburn is reflected by the Science Department. Except for required ninth grade science, courses offered consist of mainly college preparatory electives. The courses always fill up fast on tally day, which shows the interest in them. Physics, biology, chemistry, and computer science are among the courses offered. 17 Music The Music Department handles such classes as Band, Choraliers, Madrigals, and the Marching Band. Based on the first floor, this department offers students a chance to develop their musical talent. T. Wells. W. Lydell Art The Art Department provides exposure to the different medias in art as well as to the many concepts involved. With teachers Schauer and Waldoch as advisors, the students are allowed to develop their talents openly. 18 R. Waldoch, A. Schauer Home Economics K. Gregory, L. Haugerud Foreign Languages ROW 1: M. Dills, H. Dunn ROW 2: S. Morgan. S. Trabasso A lot of colleges require students to take a foreign language. Washburn students are not short changed in this requirement. The Foreign Language Department offers French, German, and Spanish for students interested in these fields. The Home Economics Department teaches some rather useful electives. There are courses in cooking, sewing, and child care. The Home Economics Department can be found on second floor. Industrial Arts Industrial Arts classes are always popular electives at Washburn. Students are given the opportunity to work with their hands and take pride in their workmanship. Various levels of electronics, metals, woods, and drafting are taught. C. Kirschbaum. D. Flugstad. R. Tauring Gym Health Americans are a health conscious group of people, and the Health and Gym Department helps students take care of themselves. Gym is required in ninth and tenth grade and offers students a chance to get out of the structured classroom during the day. Health is required in ninth and eleventh grade and it teaches students how to take care of their bodies and also how to save others lives with CPR. 20 N. Moody. C. Voss, P. Kairis. M. Orman. G. SPORTS STREET Millers Steal Second In City A season of ups and downs captured the Miller’s baseball season. Starting off with two disruptive losses against top rival teams didn’t help the team morale. Great concentration was needed to bounce back which the team displayed. The Millers entered region play and impressed everyone with their aggresive style by beating Anoka and Fridley respectively. The Miller’s season came to an abrupt end as they were upended by a capable Osseo team. While the JV and Sophomore teams do not participate in scheduled tournament play, they made a more than respectable name for themselves. These prospects should help maintain the powerful varsity team. ROW 1: D. Ranzinger, V. Brookshire, Capt. S. Ziegler. Capt. S. Hart. M. Dahl. N. Holdgrafer, J. Krantz. ROW 2: M. McNamer. C. The biggest up was when the Millers grabbed the Twin City Title from number one ranked and undefeated Hill-Murray. This is the first year a Minneapolis school has ever had the honor of holding the Twin City Title. The Millers were seeded number one in Region 5AA. They proved their excellence by gliding through the region, beating North in the finals. The gals played two tough games in the tournament. First they played Edina and lost by five points and then played Duluth East and lost by two points. Each year the State proves as a learning experience and we hope the three year tradition will continue. The frolicking began on Monday as the pepfest blew in. First, Terry Armstrong and Shelly Honderich were crowned Snow King and Queen to reign over the festivities. This was determined by the annual “legging” and “guerning” contest. The senior men and sophomore women tugged their way to hold the 1983 tug-o-war Championship. Next, the Millermen plowed through with a dance that was a smashing success. Throughout the week, groans could be heard from MacQuarrie Field as Wash-bum women competed in Powder Puff football in hope of capturing class superiority. Tuesday drifted by and Millers protested to winter by acting and dressing up for “I Wish I Were In Hawaii” day. On Wednesday, many dressed up for “opposite sex” day, which had a chilly effect. Millwheels, Washburn’s annual talent show, was performed on Wednesday and Thursday nights. The Snow Week dance on Friday night was a perfect ending to a perfect week. Prom Friday, May 7, marked the memorable date of Prom. One hundred forty-six formally dressed couples attended the dance held at the Edina Country Club. Everyone enjoyed dancing to the music of the band Fairchild, strolling around the golf course, or meandering on the balcony overlooking it. This, along with the beautiful evening, added to the excitement of the night, which will be remembered by all who attended. On arriving at the twelfth floor of the Minneapolis Athletic Club, the first thing you probably noticed was the crowd. One hundred twenty-eight couples attended, and either congregated around long tables to sit and talk with each other or danced to the music of Freefall. Slow dances, easily the most popular of the evening, were enjoyed. An added attraction was provided by Meg Lawson, who joined the band for two numbers. All the necessary ingredients were present to make this night of March 5 pleasant and one to be recalled in the future with fond memories. Black History Week Many students, under the direction of Ms. Russell, participated in Black History Month this year. The purpose of the month was to inform students of the many talents and accomplishments of black people in our history. Morning announcements informed of the contributions of many black people in our society. The highlight of the month was a program put on by students which displayed their many talents, as well as creating a sense of understanding among all students. 112 Sadie Hawkins Mark and Sally 114 A knee-slapping good time was to be had on November 12 at the Sadie Hawkins dance. The dance was the climax of a week filled with orange flowers, blue ties, and hint-a-mints. The gals started chasing their guys early, and 196 guys got snatched for the annual Grist run affair. Everyone enjoyed strolling through Hillbilly Haven or Lovers Lane, while some tried their luck at the Cornpone Casino. Eventually most guys were led to Marryin’ Sam to get hitched. The square dance caller livened up the crowd for some rip-roaring, foot-stomping dancing. The senior class chose Sally Roll wage n and Mark Larson as their Daisy Mae and Lil Abner to reign over this successful fundraiser. 115 Royalty Queen Rene and King Robert Peter and Tracy Peggy and Peter 116 Homecoming Bright orange and blue balloons, along with the colorful Homecoming buttons, claiming to “Roll ’em Over,” were much to be seen as the week of Homecoming took place. The pepfest on Wednesday psyched everyone up for the events to come. Friday was filled with excitement. It began with the tempting aroma of freshly popped popcorn (bringing anticipation of the upcoming game.) Later, the annual Homecoming Show took place. Along with the show came the event that all were waiting for, the coronation of King Robert Schweitzer, and Queen Rene Anderson. From here the fans headed for MacQuarrie Field to watch the mighty Miller football team sweep over Southwest with a 33-7 victory. The halftime show consisted of the display of class floats and entertainment provided by the marching band and the Millermates. The week came to a climax that evening, as many couples enjoyed dancing to the music of the Answers. 118 119 A stunning array of talent was displayed at Millwheels this year. It was an original production with a new director, and a new theme was introduced. Fresh, colorful, and creative acts were performed with style. The stage crew, although behind the scenes, played a major part in the performance. As always, Millwheels proved to be a major success. 122 There was a special feeling at Welcome Week this year, as not only were freshmen welcomed, but all the new students and faculty. The excitement began with the Tuesday night Football Preview. The Mighty Millers cheered their team on to a 8-0 victory over Southwest. The enthusiasm picked up at the Pep Fest on Thursday., The cheerleaders got the pace going, as everyone showed their spirit. The skit drew lots of laughter, and it was all climaxed by the dancing of the Millermates. The excitement didn’t end here, as the fans led the soccer team to a whomping victory over Edina Thursday night. Friday began early, as the Seniors dressed to the wish of the lucky freshman, and picked them up for breakfast. Members are elected annually by their peers and meet during fourth hour each day. Student Council is responsible for organizing all of the school dances, except Sadie Hawkins, the Welcome Week and Snow Week festivities, and all of the school pepfests. Other major services they provide include compiling the student directory and a Thanksgiving food drive for the community. About a dozen members of our council attended a city-wide Student Council meeting where they discussed methods of improving school spirit, and in particular, ways to alleviate the problems caused by the school closings and the steps taken to reorganize. Christman When the 1983 WAHIAN staff took over last spring, the task of putting out a yearbook was completely foreign. But as the year progressed, we quickly learned how it was done. After two trimesters of hard work, we feel we have put out the best book we possibly could. I would like to thank David Bank Studio for the numerous photographic services they provided and Mr. Johnson for the help and guidance throughout the year. Without them there would not be a yearbook at all. I hope the 1983 WAHIAN will be an accurate record of the memorable year it portrays, and provides nothing but enjoyment when reading it now and in the years to come.
