1981. The seniors proved their superiority as they stuffed their faces the fastest in the cake eating contest. At the same pep fest the Millermates bounced to “Brick House.” The freshmen couldn’t help being pulled into the spirit of Washburn High School. Senior servant day began with many bizarre, row-die characters entering Perkins for breakfast before school (much to the dismay of the two waitresses). The servants sold for the bargain price of 25 cents. They paraded around school all day catering to every whim of their freshmen masters. Whether it was senior servant, orange and blue day. hat and glasses day. or geek day; students at Washburn dressed up to the occasion. The mighty Miller soccer team whipped Rose-mount Thursday evening after the barbecue in the parking lot. The week climaxed on Friday at Parade Stadium as the football team tore up Southwest 35-6. i4 Homecoming was infectious. Washburnites caught the spirit and it moved through the school like an epidemic. No experience equals that feeling of enthusiasm when one is surrounded by, and filled with, Homecoming. Perhaps the pepfest was the breeding place. As the student body gathered, the excitement multiplied and was rapidly passed on. By Friday the Millers were breathing Homecoming. It was thick in the auditorium during sixth hour as spirit shone through students’ talent at the show. A steady drizzle couldn’t wash away the fans filling the Washburn stands for the game. Excitement went up with the umbrellas and orange and blue balloons. The football team set out to “Embarrass the Polars’’ as creative designers finalized their floats for the halftime parade. King Mike and Queen Mary beamed and waved from their convertible seat throne, still glorying in the thrill of their coronation after school. The victorious football team and many satisfied fans rushed home to put on their dancing shoes. Pre-enthused Millers entered the Homecoming Dance. Buster Friendly supplied a beat, Washburn sup-)lied a building, and the dancers had a blast. Kathy And Bill Queen Mary King Mike Mark And Katey Patty And Randy 41 At Work, Rest, Or Play . . . 4? 41 Flash flood warnings and torrential rain did not dampen the spirit of 156 girls and their lucky dates chosen for the Semiformal Dance. However, the flood was not the only flashy thing. The band, Woodbridge, and the Minneapolis Athletic Club provided a fine atmosphere for an exciting evening. Good memories will linger on as we look back on our first spring dance. 44 Prom May 1, 1981 was no ordinary night for 188 couples entering the Lafayette Club. It was Prom night and the excitement was mounting as they walked through a garden and in past a colorful water fountain. The band Zenner helped set the evening’s mood with slow romantic songs as well as rowdy rockin’ tunes. The lakeshore, moonlit perches, and many sunrise breakfasts made this dance the ultimation of the year’s romance. 45 4f, 47 Opus III Opus III, Washburn's third annual classical talent show, was staged on April 30. 1981. 48 Under the experienced eye of Ms. Joyce Anderson, the student directed show was a smash. It consisted of a wide variety of talent, ranging from bagpipes to a barber shop quartet. Refreshments served outside the auditorium after the show made the evening complete. 49 Sadie Hawkins Orange bows and blue ties, gotcha and took buttons, and happy gkls and flattered boys were abundant from November 9 to 13, the week of our annual Sadie Hawkins dance. This year 249 couples (the most ever!) wandered about rural W. H. S. Earlier in the week the seniors had decided who would reign at the dance. David “Lil Abner” McConkey and Katey “Daisy Mae” Leek found out at the dance on the 13th of November that they were the chosen favorites. Square dancing, games, door prizes. Marryin’ Sam, and the lover’s tree were all available to the Sadie goers. There was also a jail for all the Abners that lost their ladies. The dance was great thanks to the Grist staff who ran the whole affair. si Millwheels The talent in Millerville was abounding on February 10 and 11 when stage struck Millers performed for their friends and families. The Millermates magically dancing to “Numbers” and a traveling drum duet enhanced the show, along with a spicy Hot Lunch” served up mostly by juniors. The laughs were rolling to 82’s “Happily Zoned” and “Batman” skits, but the highlight had to be “Pinball Wizard” and the fantastic tunes that came with it. The bands “Europa” and “Infinity” also gave to the Millwheels-goers a fine listening experience. The stage crew and Estelita Malicsi put so much effort into the show that a success was inevitable. First the royalty was announced. Kine Jeff Stearns was chosen on the basis of his great legs with Queen Diane Bartko at his side, chosen to “guern over the festivities. The juniors tugged away all challenging classes and hold the 1982 tug-of-war championship. Both the boys and the girls captured the ropes. Concluding the pepfest, the senior Millermen plowed in with a dance that Blew away the crowd. Washburn’s annual talent show. Millwheels, was staged Wednesday and Thursday nights. Wednesday after school grunts and groans could be heard from the field as the powderpuff football games were played. Girls from each class competed in the tackle football games to try and prove their class superiority. On Thursday the Millers united in “1 wish I were in Hawaii” day. A protest went out to cold weather as students sunbathed, dressed, and acted as if they were in Hawaii. The activities ended as the Millers drifted to the 5th Avenue Band during Friday night’s dance. 57 58 SOPHOMORES Sarah Adams Mats Ahlback Brenda Albertson Deanna Alevizos Cynthia Anderson Elizabeth Anderson Kristen Anderson Steven Anderson Letitia Andrews Deann Anfinson Sharlene Arbuckle Kevin Ario Robert Arnquist Ronny Austin Keith Bach John Bacig Dana Badenhoff Elizabeth Bardwell Timothy Barsaloux Megan Bartell Rodd Bartko Shelby Battey Richard Bauman Carolynn Bell Darren Belnavis Constance Bennett 60 v V) Stephanie Bergerson Laurie Bergstrom Sharon Berry Julie Bion Eric Bjelland Matthew Blazei Thomas Bodger Ross Boekhoff Kevin Bonner Joanna Booher Peter Borgen Nancy Bowman Jeffrey Brady Andrea Breen Colleen Broeckel Dana Brown Kimberly Brown Richard Brown Elizabeth Buck Gina Budd Melanie Burak Jonathan Burkhardt Jason Cameron Gregory Carlson James Carlson David Carriger Charlene Carter 61 Sarah Casey Jeffrey Cashdollar Jennifer Cerny Patrick Chan Jack Christman Deidre Clark Gregory Clayton Deborah Close Paul Cookos Michael Courteau Raymond Crosby Ronald Daher Michele Dahl Nicole Covert Sheila Cracraft Lisa Clough Daniel Daly 6? Although the team was small and relatively inexperienced, the little Millers with the help of Coach Turnbaugh. proved that they could learn quickly what it takes to play as a team. The sophs gained strength with a big win over Central when the team first showed signs of real teamwork. Moving on to North, they faced defeat in a physically challenging game but came back to clinch the win. Ending the season at South, the Millers showed consistency as well as teamwork with four touchdowns in an excellent offensive game. The Millers were left to share the City title with Edison and a six and one record. The gridders lost only to Edison in the final moments and handily defeated unbeaten Roosevelt 20-0. The Millers then proved to the coaches and the City that they were the number one team in the conference. Besides their show of city supremacy, the mighty Millers unleashed themselves against a strong LaCrosse Central team resulting in victory for their only non-conference game of the season. Moving on from the Roosevelt victory, our gridders went on to the State playoffs and a tough Rosemount team. After a close first half, it looked like there was a chance of hosing Rosemount. but the second half turned sour when the Irish took the winning edge over the frustrated Washburn team, ending the season for the orange and blue. With wins over strong Southwest and Henry teams, the runners proved that they could go the distance with outstanding team work. Toward the end of the season, injuries began to haunt the Millers with All-City runners Dave Bjel-land and Cary Teague out with leg problems. Also named to the All-City roster was senior Eric Premack. Injuries forced many of the junior varsity squad to run varsity at the City and Region meets. Even so, the team managed to pull off an impressive fifth place in city. That’s 250 miles to you and me — at least! Winning first in the City Meet and then second in Regions enabled the team to participate in state competition. Although the dream of first was not fulfilled. the girls were not too far off. Five individuals made the All-City Team: Mary Weber. Although their record was 5-6-3, this is very misleading. The mighty sophomore Millers were blown out of only one game which is very good. But they didn’t put their money where their mouth was until this year. The 1981 soccer season was an extremely successful one. The mighty kicking Millers finished the season with a 12-1-2 record, with its only loss to Minnehaha Academy 1-2. The future looked bright for the kickers going into region play with the No. 1 ranking in the State. But they came up short, losing to Minnehaha Academy again, but this time in the Region finals. This was a very heartbreaking defeat for the Millers but as strong as the soccer program is at Washburn, they’ll be back. The dedicated tracksters began their grueling workouts as soon as February’s flurries ceased and turned into March mush. Through these agonizing practices emerged a promising group of girls; the majority being underclassmen. After achieving an honorable second place in the All-City meet (falling only to Central), five of the leggers ran for state: Jane Hale, Katherine Robinson, Lea Rinker, Mary Weber, and Phillisa Yovicson. Although no places were won through individual competition, the team’s relay captured a proud sixth place. From our point of view, it seems shin splints are definitely worth it. Since that time no other changes of great significance have effected the Washburn student body. But with lack of state funds and student enrollment down, the school board has proposed the closing of three of the ten Minneapolis high schools. The closing of these schools will greatly affect the make up of the Washburn student body and will also have a great impact on the traditional view of Washburn students. We hope the new incoming students will pick up on the great spirit and fun that encompasses the Washburn student body. 199 Index ADMINISTRATION Berntscn, Dean .......8. 78 Elias.
