Homecoming is not only a time, it’s a feeling - and the week of September 29 the spirit of Homecoming was thick in the air. Nathan Kaatrud provided this year’s button and theme for the confrontation against Southwest: “Let’s shove it down their peace pipe. On Friday, the talent-packed program came to a climax with the coronation of Queen Liz Kos and King Tim Swanson. Then it was on to MacQuarrie Field. The enthusiastic fans were equipped with loud cheers and orange and blue balloons. At half time, the Class of ’81 proved it’s creativity by winning the float contest. The Miller gridders. however, were not so fortunate as they fell to the Indians 14-12. The fun filled week came to an end at the annual Homecoming dance with music provided by Castaway. Homecoming - Miller Style Homecoming Court Semiformal In late February, signs proclaiming, “Ask a guy and get high! (Emotionally),” announced the upcoming annual Washburn semiformal. This year’s dance was held at the Minneapolis Athletic Club from 8 until 11 on March 8. Phantasy, a local band, provided the music for the 175 couples that attended the girl-ask-guy affair. This year no dinner was included with the dance, which most people felt was an improvement. The evening was a success and a good time was had by all. Prom On May 2, a beautiful sunset and a clear night welcomed 135 couples to the Lafayette Club for the 1980 Prom. The Club, located on the shore of Lake Minnetonka, provided the perfect setting for this memorable evening. Inside, the elegantly dressed couples danced to the music of Castaway and socialized until the clock struck eleven. The full moon, calm lake, and good company will be remembered for years to come. Seniors Have More Fun! Sadie Hawkins On the evening of November 7, over 250 lucky ladies managed to drag a man into the halls of Washburn for the Grist sponsored Sadie Hawkins Dance. Once inside, each woman kept a tight clutch on her guy to avoid having him dragged off to jail by an eagle-eyed sheriff. Most of the couples spent their time either hootin' and hollerin' on the dance floor or trying their skills at the many games in the Cornpone Casino. The Marryin’ Sams in the auditorium were kept busy as over 200 couples made their way down the aisles to exchange the vows of matrimony. The price paid for getting wed was a mere dollar, plus a few “I do's” and a big ol smooch. After the ceremony the couple was presented with a temporary Dogpatch marriage license. At ten o'clock, the happy students made their way into the gym where awards were given for best beard, best L’il Abner and Daisy Mae costumes, cutest couple, and best vegetable corsage. Names were drawn for door prizes and the evening ended with the crowning of Katy Lloyd and Dave Herridge as Daisy and Abner. 19 CAST (in order of appearance) Charlie Cowell ........ Mike Bratrud, Chris Hahn Despite the forty degree temperatures and the absence of snow, Snow Week '81 was a flurry of activities. The week's festivities began with a pepfest during which seniors Scott Mens and Laura Galbraith were crowned Snow King and Queen. This honor was bestowed upon them as winners of the legging and guern-ing contests. Other highlights of the auditorium were a closely matched freethrow competition, the entertaining performance of the Millermen, and a tug-of-war between the classes. In the finals of the tug-of-war event, the senior men and junior women emerged victorious. The pepfest came to a close after a vicious human polo game featuring the winter sports teams. Although many Miller women had plays memorized and were willing to bear the bruises, the annual powderpuff football games were cancelled due to lack of snow. The week continued with Millwheels on Wednesday and Thursday, which played to their usual large crowds, followed by the fun-filled dance on Friday night. All in all, Snow Week managed to plow away the midwinter blues from Washburn. 23 MILLW 19 The auditorium was bound in yellow ribbons to welcome home the hostages from Iran. The stage was set and the fans were psyched. The event - MILL-WHEELS 1981! Carrying on the Washburn tradition of excellence. Millwheels held something for everyone. A number of bands kept the audience tapping ft HEELS 81 their toes, and the comedy skits provided laughter for the evening. With the supervision of director Mrs. Ma-licsi, and the stage crew’s help, much of the hidden talent in Washburn was brought into the limelight. The hard work and hours of rehearsal paid off. making the show a success. Black History Auditorium The 1981 Black History program which expressed the theme “We are the Future was a success. The show was geared at ridiculing racism and stereotypes while promoting unity and participation from the total student body. The program which was hosted by Jeanette Russell featured the Chor-aliers, Deanna Sample, Paula Birth, Jane Hale, a band led by Carl Adams. Tina Bowman, Frenchie Apple-white, and Sharon Hill. 26 FACULTY Administration Dawn Mennes Assistant Principal Dean Berntsen Principal Dear Students: During the 1980-81 school year Washburn students have once again distinguished themselves as outstanding members of the Minneapolis school community. Mavity Even before the first classes started on September 2, members of the student council had met together to plan Welcome Week. It was a Welcome Week for teachers as well as for students. The Student Council, following tradition, welcomed the teachers by presenting apples to them. With Welcome Week past, they started the long and grueling job of putting the student directory together. Homecoming, with its usual frills and excitement, was planned and organized by the council which made it a success for all. Row 1: J. Wilson. J. Latteral Row 2: C. Flannery, E. Prcmack Row 3: K. The generous gifts from the student body made both of these projects the most successful in Washburn’s history. Class competition proved the juniors the most generous. Among other accomplishments were the organization of the Snow Week, Semiformal, and Prom dances. 70 Student Council Advisor Clifford Johnson Row 1: D. Courteau. S. Rollwagen. P. Christman Row 2: D. Bringing back the old tradition of dancing to the Washburn band and adding new ideas like the punk rock dance, gave the squad a unique style. They entertained the crowds during halftime at football, soccer, and basketball games and lent their support to the hockey team at big games. M M’s were sold by the Millermates to pay for help on their Millwheels routine from a choreographer. From their first appearance in 1958 as the dancing “Miller Hi-Lites,” the Millermates have come a long way and are a vital part of Washburn enthusiasm. 73 Blue Tri is a service organization comprised of senior women with the goal of making Washburn life a little better. This year’s girls, under the direction of Armilla Walsh, took on an aluminum can drive, sent candy canes to the teachers during the holidays, and had their annual sale of carnations for Valentine’s Day. Other fund raising activities included donut dunks, bake sales at a local bank, candy sales, and a spring car wash. All money raised went toward leaving a gift to the school. Much of their time was spent finding what the news was, and what their readers would like to hear about. Sports, news, editorials, pictures, and helpful information on upcoming events could be found in every issue of the Grist. The Grist room was a little hectic around deadline days, but the staff successfully managed to publish a newspaper every month. Each month the Grist consisted of many interesting articles, all of which the staff should be proud. A few of the favorites were: “Grist and Garden,” “Literacy: Fact or Fiction,” “Baseball, thrown out,” and “They should be shot.” Besides putting together an interesting newspaper each month, the staff, along with the help of the Newswriting class, planned and organized the Sadie Hawkins dance. 79 Stage Crew 80 M. Afraican aritifacts and history panels, which told of various aspects of African and Afro-American culture, were displayed in the showcase and library during the first two weeks of February. Next a rap session was held where some faculty members and concerned students conversed about everything from racism to school spirit. The whole month ended on a high note with the Black History program which the committee members felt was something that really created a sense of unity. 81 Row 1: H. Farmer. S. Johnson Row 2: C. Starting things off on the right note, the music department had a concert in the fall. As winter weather started to set in, the singers did their part to keep the winter blahs away. They performed a concert during school, and before winter break filled the halls with “sounds of jolly.” As a group, they participated in the selling of a variety of fruits. The money went toward the financing of a trip to Chicago. Mr. Ly-dell directed the Choraliers, Golliards, Girls’ Choir. Choralier Madrigals, and the Mixed Choir. Washburn, being the only city school to have guy cheerleaders, had the advantage of male voices over the loud and enthusiastic crowds. With pepfests, cupcakes for team members, and a lot of spirit, the cheerleaders showed their support for their teams. Meeting for practice at 7:15 in the morning was no one’s idea of fun. but through hard work and a lot of direction from advisor Cliff Johnson, the cheerleaders proved themselves worthy of the Washburn name. 90 Varsity Cheerleading Row 1: C. Made up of several returning players, they tied Southwest for first place in the conference. By bumping Southwest the second time around, they won the Region Title and proved they were prime candidates for the State Tournament. The women's first opponent was the fiesty International Falls team (record 19-0), whom they quickly subdued. With this victory under their belt, they met tournament favorite Armstrong who prevailed over the fighting Miller women. They returned home with a noble fourth place in the State Tournament. With the arrival of the State Meet, WHS had an entry in the 400 freestyle relay consisting of Cathy Morrill, Liz Morrill, Anna Pohlmann. and Jeanne Miller with a new school record of 3.52.3. From practice in November until the State Meet in February, the men worked long and hard. Becuase of the lack of snow, meets regularly scheduled at Theodore Wirth Park had to be cancelled. Instead, the city coaches got together and planned mini-meets at Lake Calhoun. The real challenge, however, came at the city and region meets, held concurrently at Hyland Hills. The men came out ahead and were sent to the State Meet held at Sugar Hills in Grand Rapids. They came home with an eighth place and memories of good times. 128 Women’s Cross Country Skiing twenty-five In early November over Washburn women began practice for the 1980-81 cross country ski season, the largest in Washburn ski history. After several meets were cancelled due to no snow, the city coaches set up mini meets at Lake Calhoun. This game the women a chance to see the competition they were up against. When the region and city meets arrived, held simultaneously at Hyland Hills, the women were ready. They received two team first places and were sent to the State Meet at Sugar Hills in Grand Rapids. At the State Meet, the Wash-burn women were overwhelmed by both the lavish room accomodations and the talent displayed by their opponents. All in all, this year’s ski team had the best season ever. First year coach Keith O’Brien had high expectations of maintaining this feat with this year’s squad. Unfortunately, the team fell into the same steps as the varsity team and came up with a strong second place finish behind Southwest with a 11-7-2 record. Among those faces were head coach A1 DeWolf and his assistant Keith O’Brian. Together they molded a young, inexperienced hockey squad in to a team powerful and threatening enough to challenge the eventual winner of Region V. After suffering a one goal loss to Henry in their first encounter, the Millers got revenge the second time around with an 8-5 victory to capture a second place in conference play behind Southwest. Competing in regions with Bloomington schools for the first time, the Millers came into their first regional game displaying their best hockey all season with an explosive 7-1 victory over Bloomington Lincoln. Matching up in the regions semifinals with another Bloomington school, the Millers in an underdog role, fell short of their goal of making it to the State Tournament by losing to the eventual Region V winner, Bloomington Jefferson. Their tremendous effort and work all season long earned them a respected 17-4-1 record. Row 1: S. Johnson. M. Lowey. M. Larson, P. Christman. J. Dullum. J. Biattie, J. Parsons, B. Courteau. D. Coach Keith O'Brian Women’s Varsity Basketball The 1981 women’s basketball team, made up of several returning players, knew exactly what they wanted from the start. Vigorous workouts, hard drills, and an over abundance of enthusiasm put the Millers on the road to victory. The team suffered a let down when they lost to Southwest early in the season, but bounced back and beat the Indians the second time around, giving themselves a second place title in the conference. When the Regional meet came, the WHS girls played like experts and dribbled past all, including Southwest a third time, to claim the Region AA title and gain entry into the State Tournament. Excitement at the State Tournament was abundant, and the women’s first round was against a mighty Coon Rapids team who eventually captured the State Crown. Fighting hard the women were defeated, but went on to win their second round against a seasoned Lakeville squad. The Miller women ended the season with their dreams fulfilled and came home to a school full of old and new admireres. This hard work helped condition the young, agile players to a first-rate team. As the season progressed, the J V players increased in their ability and impressed all by their exceptional play on the court.
