The event took place in a spacious ballroom at the Radisson South. An enjoyable dinner, with relaxing music in the background, started the night out perfectly. This marked a first; never before has dinner been combined with a Washburn semi-dance. After dinner, the couples moved on to the floor and danced to the music of Airtight. Good food, good music, and a good atmosphere all helped to make the evening a success. 36 Tucked away in a secluded country setting, the Honeywell Country Club, on the evening of May 12, came alive with 142 elegantly dressed couples. As the couples entered the club, their eyes fell upon a comfortable lounge where refreshments were being served. This room provided a nice spot to relax and socialize during the course of the evening. Moving on to the dance floor, couples indulged themselves in the original music of Phantasy. A full moon and a star-filled sky added a special touch to the evening. 37 Mrm Growing old is no more than a bad habit, which a busy person has no time to form. The crowd grew larger, they couldn’t be held back a second longer. The students pushed through the doors and filled the halls. Another Welcome Week had begun! Wednesday during the lunch hours many anxious seniors sold their rights over to a freshman for a low price of 25 cents. This provided the freshman with a chance of seniors to meet and breakfast to eat. On Thursday men’s boxer shorts, slinky shirts, and the extreme of a six foot tall dog would be seen walking the halls, carrying books, lunches, and students to their classes. Friday began early with a rousing pepfest featuring the Millermates’ version of Great Halls of Fire, Freddy Freshman, the Cheerleaders, and many warm greetings to the new faculty and students. After school our Mighty Millers trounced North by a score of 28-12! That night a dance with music done by Disco World brought our Welcome Week to a smashing close. Welcome Week Greets New Washburnites Homecoming Sparks A Spirited Flame Signs were showing, excitement involved all. the number of couples was growing, it was the Washburn Homecoming of fall. The annual dance came swiftly to sweep students off their feet and into the anxious anticipation of the upcoming year. Homecoming fell on the 28th of September, but preparations began weeks in advance. Sophomore Marc Hall won the button contest with the theme “Unsettle the Pioneers,” and these buttons were sold the week of the twenty fourth. The making of the floats began shortly after school started. Blue and orange balloons, raffle tickets, and dance tickets were sold during lunch on Friday. The students escaped from their sixth hour classes with their teachers close behind to gather in the auditorium. The Homecoming Show consisted of seven well rehearsed acts. Curious guessing came to a climax at the end of the show when Betsy Brown and Peter Sampson were chosen to reign over the festivities. Our Mighty Millers entered the game against the Central Pioneers determined to “Paint Their Wagon.” Leading, 7-6, at half, spirit was high. The crowd was entertained by the parade of twelve floats and the marching band at intermission. Cheerleaders and Millermates added to the color. As the teams returned to the Field, the winner of the autographed football raffle and float competition were announced. Carol Peterson and the Class of ’81 won respectively. Despite the Millers loss, 25-7, the dance that evening proved successful. One hundred twenty two couples danced to the funk sounds of Adnma. All in all it was a week to remember. Hawkins Hoedown With a “yeeha” and a “yahoo” sadie ’79 galloped into Washburn on November 9. Daisy Maes and their captured LiP Abners roamed Hoot and Holler Pass, taking short breaks from the wild fun to engage themselves in a HP wedding ceremony. After kisses and rings were exchanged, the guys were able to show off their muscles and win prizes for their gals in Cow Pone Casino. Crazy knee slapping dancing went on all night in the Hillbilly Haven. During intermission, a multitude of prizes were given to lucky cowpokes and Betsy “Haystack Brown and Billy “Buzzjaw McLaughlin were picked as Daisy Mae and LiP Abner. Daisy Mae And Lil’ Abner MILLWHEELS 1980 An evening filled with exceptional talent, good comedy, and a lot of singing and dancing was Millwheels 1980. An abundance of student talent and hard, dedicated work were combined to produce an excellent show. A few of the many acts were “Specialties”, The Rapping Crew, The White Beat, “Two in Love,” and the Class of 80 and 81 8 comedy skits. The third act ended with a journey through the Twentieth Century Music and Dance act. A special appearance was made by Elvis Presley during the 50’s presentation. The finale came on Thursday night when the entire cast came back on stage singing to “Listen to the Music.” The Millwheels 1980 could not have been a success without the help of director Cliff Johnson and the hard working stage crew. The Annual Variety Show proved a triumph of imagination, talent, and overall production techniques. Snow Days flew in early Monday, January 28 with a flaky auditorium. It contained a Millwheels preview, the supremely talented Millermen, and the annual tug-of-war contest between the classes. The senior women won the women’s championship and the senior men walked off with the men’s championship. (What a “mighty lot” they are.) Snow Week King John Thursday came to be quite an icy event. The Powderpuff football game started with the seniors against the sophomores and the juniors against the freshmen. With the excellent coaching of several ‘macho senior men the teams did well. The senior women took first in their competition and went on to tie the junior women in the WHS Super Bowl. Queen Polly Causes Flurries The auditorium came to a climax when legs” John Exline was crowned Snow King and 10 herself, Polly Letofsky. was crowned Snow Queen. It is a story of Dolly Levi, a matchmaker, who eventually marries a man whom she is trying to find a match. The March 20-21 performances were the culmination of many weeks of long practices for the forty-seven members of the cast. Director Estelita Malicsi worked with choral director, Joyce Anderson, and orchestra director, William Lydell, to produce a successful show. The stage crew and orchestra members were also significant factors in the final product. 59 : Amy Abraham Bruce Adelsman Mark Alexander Joel Almquist Mary Amundson Brian Anderson John Anderson Karn Throughout the year they organized dances and pepfests that included Homecoming, Snow Week, Spirit Week, Semi, and Prom. Outside of arranging annual events, the Student Council attacked two major issues. The first being the inefficient lunch program. They staged a lunch boycott that will hopefully bring about better food and lower prices. The Student Council also went to KSTP and investigated the station’s policy concerning presentation of certain commercials during prime time television. The third annual Thanksgiving Drive provided a record eighteen families with turkey dinners. Gifts were presented to the residents of the Nicollet Convalescent Home as a result of the Christmas Project. The 1980 Student Council accomplished all it set out to do and then some. Advisor Cliff Johnson 77 NHS In their junior year, sixty-five students were chosen as members of the National Honor Society. The selection was made on the basis of scholarship, leadership, and responsibility. For the first time, students were required to have a recommendation written for them by someone who has known them outside of school. On September 17, 1979, the seniors were honored at an induction ceremony. This organization helped usher at the open house. Row I: J. Holtzman. B. Bezat, K. Molke, P. Raich, L. Leistiko, Sec. M. New friendships were made and class unity grew, leaving many with happy memories of their senior year at good or whs. 79 INTERNATIONAL CLUB Advisor Mr. Burke For the second year at Washburn, the International Club continued to provide foreign students with an exciting look at life in Minneapolis. Some of the activities included a Halloween party, a sleigh ride, and an AFS weekend. The program, presented by Washburn students, was designed to make all Washburn students more aware of the impact of Black culture on America. A variety of talent was exhibited during the program, including a choir, a string and woodwind quartet, a modern dance group, and a jazz group. Mrs. Juliette Brown, advisor, was a key factor in making this a successful program. 83 D. Williams, T. Antoun, V. Norvell. J. Sengbush, S. Peterson. K. Kuhn. LaVictoire. H. Keller. C. Peterson, S. Activities Sveinar Larsen, Photographer Capturing the moments of an entire year and putting them into a book is no easy task. The 1980 WAHIAN staff learned to work as a group; we struggled together combining old and new ideas, aiming to make our book the best. An unusual group of students containing many energetic individuals kept the WAHIAN room lively, yet productive, throughout the year. We hope this book will bring fond memories of the activities and happenings that made up the 1979-80 school year. A special thanks is in order for Stacey Faunce, who designed the cover, and Marc Hall, whose art work was an added dimension to the book. I am grateful to all who put up with our picture schedules and allowed us to meet our deadlines. John McCreary, Editor Betsy Brown, Women s Sports j thank Mr Johnson for guidance and for looking at our ideas with an open mind. John McCreary, Editor GRIST Advisor Mr. Stitzel Sports, editorials, pictures, and highlights were all part of the school’s newspaper. Each day the Grist staff worked hard to put out an excellent school newspaper which was published every three weeks. Put out in the spring of the school year, its name comes from students reading it while sitting under the poplar trees on the school lawn. The Poplars Staff holds contests for the best short story, picture, poem, artwork, and humor story throughout the year. The best in each category wins a prize. The final Poplars is assembled from the best submissions in each category. BOYS’ STATE Each year the American Legion sponsors Boys State, a learning experience in local, state, and federal government. Washburn traditionally sends more representatives than any high school in the state. The five representatives from Washburn went to the St. Olaf campus where they set up a mock government. Boys State helps tomorrow’s leaders learn about the system of government that they will be a part of. Row 1: J. McCreary Row 2: D. Goldberg, T. Shoop. T. David 97 CHORALIERS J. Angell, Pres. S. Before winter break, they presented an auditorium that was well accepted by the student body. Groups continued to perform both in and out of school throughout the year. With a spring trip planned, Choraliers and Girls Choir sold fruit to help with expenses. Choraliers also enhanced Valentine’s Day by selling val-a-grams for a dollar. They lacked the size and experience of teams in the past; but they did, however, possess enthusiasm for the game. The opening game provided excitement and thrills as Washburn came back to edge Henry 14-13 in the closing seconds. After defeating North in game two, the Millers went to Parade Stadium where they lost to a massive Edison ball club. This was the first in a series of five losses that tested the team’s morale and willingness to come back. The squad traveled to St. Paul Harding and came out on top 14-8 amidst a torrential rain. A victory over South closed a season that was filled with ups and downs. The team grew closer together and learned it takes more than just a winning tradition to come out on top. It takes long hours of dedication to be a winner. ns Row 1: M. Pamel, M. McNamer, J. Rose. B. Michael, R. Erdall, Capt. M. Longman. B. Carter, P. Goeres. D. Callender Row 2: M. Harris. M. Sampson. D. The team kicked off the season with victories over Henry and North. Edison then ended their hopes of an undefeated season. The Millers then came back to win their next three games, outscoring their opponents 122 to 8. Numerous training drills incorporated Coach Ario’s belief that ball control and conditioning are the foundation of a winning team. The season began rather abruptly, losing the first three games, but the Millers came back to wallop city rival West 10-0. This year’s squad was plagued by a one goal jinx, but maintained a very impressive record throughout the regular season. Section V soccer playoffs paired Washburn with Blake. The coaches seeded the Millers sixth in the section, but the squad proved they were contenders by whipping Blake. The next game matched WHS against a very strong Burnsville team. The Millers played very well, but were stunned when the Bears scored the one and only goal. Soccer at Washburn High School is growing. With help from the booster club, and some excellent cheerleaders, the future looks promising. 120 1 VARSITY SOCCER Record: 9 wins 9 losses - 1 tie Washburn 0 Cooper 1 Washburn 2 Minnehaha 3 Washburn 2 Coon Rapids 3 OT Washburn 10 West 0 Washburn 3 Prior Lake 0 Washburn 1 Minnetonka 0 Washburn 1 Burnsville 2 OT Washburn 3 Rosemount 1 Washburn 2 Richfield 3 OT Washburn 0 Kennedy 1 Washburn 0 White Bear Mariner 1 Washburn 4 Sim ley 3 Washburn I Hastings 0 Washburn 2 Apple Valley 1 Washburn 2 Park Cottage Grove 2 OT Washburn 2 West 1 Washburn 1 Lincoln 3 Section V Plavoffs Washburn 3 Blake 1 Washburn 0 Burnsville 1 121 Gag’s Girls Go Get ’Em Quarter-mile circuits, numerous Rose Garden hills, and the Swain Invitational are memories of the grueling 1979 cross country season. A great deal of leadership, as well as talent, was exhibited by this team, and its style of play resembled that of the varsity. The hoopsters compiled a fine 13-5 record, which included an awesome 94-77 win over West. The team consisted primarily of sophomores, who will have a chance to make the transition from sophomore to varsity ball. The remaining freshman will lead the team next year. Although they were young, the team had great depth and any player could come off the bench to fill the hightops of a starter. They were looked upon as an underdog as they entered the region playoffs. The team showed much class as they fought their way to the region finals. A tremendous effort on the part of the Millers in the region finals produced the most exciting game of the year. A mere one point was the difference in making the State Tournament as the Polars edged the Millers 45-44. “Junior” Millers Dribble Past Opponents With each and every game the junior Miller’s skill improved. This was shown by the large margins they won their games by. The team this year consisted of eight outstanding freshmen, the best freshmen turnout for women’s basketball ever at Washburn. They had a real close encounter of the worst kind, losing to Henry in the final conference game; thus, ending their chance of being City Champs! Many of this year’s players are definite prospects for varsity in ’80 and ’81. Washburn sent one relay and six individuals to the state meet heid at Park Cottage Grove. Mary Kaye Heiman finished a strong second in the 165 meter low hurdles, Jane Hale sprinted across the line to capture third in the 400 meter dash. Francine Ostrem paced her way to take sixth in the two mile run, and the mile relay team handed in a time to place third. The team’s dream of winning the state title fell short as they placed seventh in the meet. 153 154 The 1979 Miller Track Team began the season with many promising seniors and developing underclassmen. Their hard work and determination paid off when they placed second in City Relays and the City Meet. Dave Gross exhibited strong leadership, breaking the school record in the two mile and placing and impressive third at the State Meet in the mile. Gross also anchored the Sprint Medley Team that came in first at Regions. Many of Washburn’s younger runners have gained valuable experience that will be an asset in future years. The Miller squad opened the 1978 season with strong pitching and powerful hitting which produced victories in the first five games. Junior pitcher, Bruce Carter, hurled a one-hitter and two-no hitters. His 2-0 no-hit shut out over a tough Roosevelt ball club proved that the Millers could beat any team in the state. For the second straight year Washburn won the city championship. The Millers accumulated a superb 10-2 conference record, losing two close games to the Edison Tommies. Washburn started the region playoffs with a victory over a weak Central nine. The next foe Washburn would have to overcome was a talented Park Center team. After falling behind early, the Millers could not come back and the season ended rather suddenly. The 1979 squad took pride in playing for W'ashburn, and were left with memories of a winning season. Not only were they responsible for filming the ever-famous senior movie, they planned the Senior Snow Party, measured for caps and gowns, and took orders for graduation announcements. In the process they also sponsored doughnut dunks and other fund raising events. This illustrious group was appointed to their positions by their homerooms, and represented these homerooms throughout the year. The single most important function of this board was to relay board decisions to the homerooms, and opinions of the homerooms to the board. 167 Karen Chatfield, Treasurer Jackie Stamos, Secretary Karen Chatfield DAUGHTERS OK THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AWARD Carol Peterson wn John McCreary rhoson for this- award based on dependability, service. leadership. and pa! riot ism.
