DAISY MAE AND LIL’ ABNER About 550 students had a good time, dogpatch style, at Washburn’s annual Sadie Hawkins dance on Friday, November 10. As soon as word of the event got out, the girls began stalking the po’ unfortunate soul they were fixin’ to drag to the dance. Among the kneeslappin’, foot stompin’ fun at this year’s Sadie were a whole ton of games, a gym for dancin’, and even places to get hitched for the night. The dance was the product of many weeks of preparation by the Grist Staff and members of the Newswriting Class. Sadie helps underwrite publication costs, and this year’s festivities grossed $1,757.75 for the Grist piggybank. 19

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl, lived in hiding with seven other Jews in a secret nest of rooms in Amsterdam. Her diary reveals their life while waiting in fear of being discovered by the Nazis. Critics called it “one of the most moving documents 10 come out of World War II. On December 13 and 14, a cast of ten Washburn students brought Anne’s diary to life After ten weeks of diligent practice, two of the most outstanding theatrical perfor mances ever at Washburn were witnessed by crowds totalling close to 400 people. The production was definitely a credit to its author. 21
