If it wasn’t the rousing pep fest that did it. the junior and senior servant day did. The freshmen and sophomores really got a taste of Washburn life when the Millers creamed North 48 to 6 in Friday’s football game. In spite of the sweltering heat, later that night 365 students showed up for the Welcome Week Dance. With Special Sounds providing the music, the dance ended the week’s festivities by making the new students feel truly welcome. THE MALT SHOT WASHBURN ! HAUNTS 4 MY HR'S {jBn e (§Aop. HOMECOMING Halls cluttered with signs and buttons plastered on students were the first signs of the upcoming event: Homecoming! On September 29, when the bell rang for the pep fest and program, there was a massive rush of students to the auditorium. The program offered many entertaining acts including the Millermates and various instrumental and singing groups. It was all climaxed by the coronation of Queen Judy and King Larry. Out at MacQuarric Field, the sun shone on packed bleachers, fifteen colorful floats, balloons, and pom-poms — the perfect setting for an action packed 28-21 victory over Southwest. The Homecoming Dance that night was the grand finale to a very exciting week. 12 “WHOMP-’EM!” 13 QUEEN JUDY AND KING LARRY HOMECOMING y ROYALTY 1978 PHIL AND HEIDI MONICA AND SCOTT PAUL AND MADONNA Although March 12 was a wet and chilly day, it didn’t hinder 147 couples from attending Washburn’s annual Semi-Formal dance. The dance, organized by the Student Council, was held at the Howard Johnson Inn located in Burnsville. The students danced the night away to the sounds of “Aire.” 15 PROM The elegant Calhoun Beach Club, with its sweeping staircase and exquisite balcony, was the location for the 1978 Prom. A room set aside for refreshments and conversation contained rustic wood floors, plush sofas, and dazzling chandeliers. Mirrors and a marble fireplace lined one wall of the dance floor. “Orion played both mellow and exciting disco music. Although the music ended at eleven. Prom did not. Many couples went to private parties or extravagant restaurants afterwards. For some. Prom did not end until five o’clock the next morning. LADD ’N HEIDI PETER ’N BETSY FRIENDSHIP DANCE Who’s the Mcfriendliest guy in town? Who’s the Mcchccriest fellow around? Who is the funniest? Whose smile is sunniest? No, not Ronald McDonald! In the revival of the Friendship Royalty, it was decided that Heidi, Ladd, Betsy, Peter, Katy, Bill, Sue, and Brian met up to these tough qualifications. Preceding the coronation ceremonies everyone was entertained by the winter sport teams’ presentations, which were remarkably humorous. The crowd went into an uproar when the gymnasts enticed a few unsuspecting guys into joining their exercises (Mr. Clifford Johnson proved to be more agile than we had believed!) The festivities ended that night with a dance. Music was supplied by Special Sounds. BILL ’N KATY BRIAN ’N SUE 17 SADIE HAWKINS o DAISY MAE AND LIL’ ABNER About 550 students had a good time, dogpatch style, at Washburn’s annual Sadie Hawkins dance on Friday, November 10. As soon as word of the event got out, the girls began stalking the po’ unfortunate soul they were fixin’ to drag to the dance. Among the kneeslappin’, foot stompin’ fun at this year’s Sadie were a whole ton of games, a gym for dancin’, and even places to get hitched for the night. The dance was the product of many weeks of preparation by the Grist Staff and members of the Newswriting Class. Sadie helps underwrite publication costs, and this year’s festivities grossed $1,757.75 for the Grist piggybank. 19 20 THE CAST Mr. Frank ..................... Micp .......................... Scott Wik Goldberg THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl, lived in hiding with seven other Jews in a secret nest of rooms in Amsterdam. Her diary reveals their life while waiting in fear of being discovered by the Nazis. Critics called it “one of the most moving documents 10 come out of World War II. On December 13 and 14, a cast of ten Washburn students brought Anne’s diary to life After ten weeks of diligent practice, two of the most outstanding theatrical perfor mances ever at Washburn were witnessed by crowds totalling close to 400 people. The production was definitely a credit to its author. 21 Five buses and 225 rowdy seniors arrived al Camp Ihduhapi on the chilly night of January 24. The majority of the mob immediately rushed towards Ml. Ihduhapi. Frosty white figures carreered down the slope on minibog-gans, snurfers. or just plain derrieres few ever reaching bottom. I or the less courageous, or those who began to get a bit more than frostbitten, a real old-fashioned square dance was held in the lodge. The seniors who braved all signs of hypothermia continued sliding, or joined in a vicious game of broomball. Shortly after ten o’clock, the still rowdy seniors boarded buses for home; their mid-winter blues left behind. SENIOR SNOW PARTY SNOW WEEK This year’s Snow Week began with a rousing pep fest featuring the new Millcrmcn dance line performing to the tunc of “Down to the Bone. Paul Pettersen and Joyce Dingley were the well chosen royalty for the legging and guerning contest. In the tug-of-war competition, the mighty senior men prevailed over all other contenders, including the sophomore girls who won the female competition. Dan Walsh won the honor of being hit in the face with a pic to benefit his class spirit committee. His sister, Trish, came up with the highest auction price and was able to take care of all sibling frustration with one swing. Later on in the week, all four classes of women got together for the Powder Puff football game. The senior girls, coached by Robert Jones. Don Williams, and Larry Molkc were irrcvokably the champions. Also included in the activities were a snow sculpture contest and of course the Snow Week dance Friday night. 2f Millwheels celebrated its thirtieth anniversary this year. Director Robert Krause says that with about 1300 people attending, it was the largest Millwheels audience ever. The show was in three acts, starting with “The Time Warp” from ’‘Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Other dazzling performances were done by Deanne Sample, the Miller-mate can-can girls, “The Trio,” The Flour City Dreamers.” and the juniors in their production of “Grease,” to name a few. Each act was exceptional. Student director Amy Rogers attributes this to the unusual cooperation of each participant during the course of organization. The show displayed the truly outstanding diversified talents of Washburn. 27 CALENDAR OF EVENTS 78-79 28 29 4 5-8 7 8 29 AUGUST First day of class Football Preview SEPTEMBER Labor Day Welcome Week Senior Servant Day Welcome Week Dance Homecoming-Southwest 12 13-14 15 18 25 DECEMBER Senior Announcements All School Play Winter Dance Hockey Preview Winter Recess Begins JANUARY Senior Snow Party Snow Week Auditorium Powderpuff Football Millwheels OCTOBER 17 Open House 19-20 Teachers’ Convention 26 Choir Concert NOVEMBER i Orchestra Concert 6 Thanksgiving Food Drive 10 Sadie Hawkins 21 Band Concertq Basketball Preview 22 Thanksgiving Recess 23-24 Tri II Begins 27 FEBRUARY 1 Millwheels 2 Snow Week Dance 14 Valentine’s Day 12-16 Black History Week 19 President’s Holiday 19-23 Energy Recess MARCH 12 Tri III Begins 15-17 State Hockey Tournament 17 St. Patricks Day 19 First Day of Baseball 23 Semi-Formal Dance JUNE 1 Senior Tests 4 Senior Tests 5 WAHIAN Distribution 6 Senior Movie 6 Commencement 8 Last Day for Underclass MAY 3 All Band Concert 10 One Act Play 17 One Act Play 23 Band Concert 31 Cap and Gown Distribution APRIL 5 Jazz Band Concert 9-13 Spring Recess 26 Orchestra Concert 28 Prom Roland R. sixty-threc seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society. These students, all in the top 15 percent of their class, were chosen for their character, service, and leadership. This year the society members became more involved in school activities. Besides ushering at the open house, they also sponsored the inter-class whopper eating contest during Spirit Week at which the juniors proved to be the most voracious. See. K. Youngdahl. V. Pres P. The council put its time and energy into the Student Directory, auditoriums and pep fests. Welcome Week, Snow Week, and always popular dances. During their second annual turkey drive there were enough generous donations from students to provide fifteen families with a holiday dinner. Many students also participated in the councils monthly effort to bring joy to the elderly at a convalescent home. Advisor Clifford Johnson FRESHMEN - ROW 1: A. Bailey, K. Horn. S. McCreary ROW 2: M. New sweaters and skirts lent extra sparkle to their performances. 79 REACH Getting new students involved in Washburn activities is just one of the many functions of Reach. Reach is for helping newly-enrolled students get as much as they can out of Washburn. One method used in the fall was a pot luck dinner. Students brought a great variety of dishes and had a enjoyable evening filled with conversation and laughter. Reach grew at a fantastic rate with the addition of ninth graders at Washburn, while interest in the organization came from all four classes. Reach participants had the chance to really appreciate what the group is all about — involvement. ROW 1: B. Thomas, M. Mahannah. B. Bczat ROW 2: J. Thurik. S. Slcffcr. F.. Ollcrman. M. Lciferman. J. Lacy called the girls together once a week to plan services for Washburn and the community, and their various fund-raisers. At Halloween a substantial amount of money was collected for UNICEF. A skating party highlighted their winter, and the trinkets they gave faculty members warmed up a cold day. Valentine’s Day was a big event at Washburn with the club's sale of carnations. The money raised from the flower sale, bake sales, and donut dunks made their annual service project a success. 84 Advisors Mary Ann Orlowski and Armilla Walsh BLACK HISTORY COMMITTEE mwiipw February was proclaimed Black History Month across the nation, and with the efforts of the Black History Organization, it was a success at Washburn. Some enthusiastic students got together in December to organize the event and found a year-long interest. In trying to get away from the typical presentations of years past, the group did more than just provide cultural music and dance, posters and speakers. An African dinner was given to the faculty. In the end a greater awareness of black achievement was created. The members themselves were brought closer together as many new friendships were formed. Not only was Black History Month extended a week into March because of Energy Break, but several members felt it was a “Black History Year.” ROW I: K. Sample. S. Gilchrist. V. Moore. C. Rhodes. T. November's issue included a special insert, the “All School Play Preview. featuring pictures of Anne Frank's cast and crew. Enlarging their pages gave the staff more freedom in layout design, and more room for cartoons and memorable articles such as “A Day in the Life of Suzy Sophomore. On occasion, the newswriting class helped out by contributing one or two articles. It was good practice for the students, who made up the majority of those chosen for next year's staff. ROW l: C. In the beginning, each section experienced the confusion of production techniques, lost pictures, and unidentified faces. As the year progressed, however, each piece began to fall into place; and with each completed page past events were recorded and reflected upon. We hope that this yearbook will provide you not only with a record of people and events, but with memories that will be cherished for years to come. Mike Boyles, Freshmen 1 would like to thank the administration and faculty for their cooperation in helping us meet the picture schedules. I am grateful for this staffs dedication, per-serverencc, and limitless spirit. Without these qualities, this yearbook would have never met its deadlines. While honing their various skills over the summer and at a clinic, the squad added several rousing cheers and lofty pyramids to the pep reserve. Besides being the defending State AA Champions, they were also rated number one in the state. The Millers put an end to any speculation that they were overrated when they handily defeated an excellent Roosevelt team in the season opener at Parade Stadium. They continued their onslaught a week later by demolishing an outclassed North team. Seven days later they showed the Pioneers why the Millers were presently rated number one, but then the bubble was popped by a strong Edison squad which possessed a sharp needle revenge. The Millers were hurt, not physically but psychologically. These players were not accustomed to losing, and it left a bitter taste in their mouths. Displaying the true spirit that Washburn is known for, the squad picked themselves up, brushed themselves off, and proceeded to win all four of their remaining regular season games. The Millers ended up in a three-way tie for the first place with Roosevelt and Edison. Fortunately for the Millers, the city coaches felt that they were the superior team and chose them to represent Minneapolis in the Twin City Championship. Washburn and St. Thomas, a perennial powerhouse, battled furiously for 48 minutes, but the Cadets came out on top 21-7. The bell, however, will continue to loll next year because of the accomplishments of the '78 team. 118 119 % ffft ROW I: R. Yates. K. Sample. K. Lewis. B. Carter. J. Evans. J. Wagner. V. Jones, M. Continuing in regional competition, the swimmers placed high in several events as Sue Heidelberg took first in the 200 meter individual medley and Andrea Ncllas pulled off an inspiring upset victory in the 100 meter butterfly. The two then teamed up with Kristi Youngdahl and Jo Ellen Larson to capture another first in the 200 meter medley relay while the team finished second overall in the region. Washburn sent a total of seven swimmers to compete in the state meet. Sue Heidelberg made a big splash, capturing a second and third place from a very talented field of swimmers. But it was the 200 medley relay team that pulled off the biggest upset. Under the leadership and inspiration of Coach Jocketty, the Millers matured rapidly and showed a marked improvement with each game. In conference play, the pucksters posted an 11-1 record, as they dominated the other teams en route to a conference championship. The team breezed through their first two games in the rcgionals, setting the stage for the championship game against Southwest. With tremendous support from the student body, the Millers played inspired hockey against rival Southwest. Washburn had complete control of the game as they won 4-1, thus placing them in the state tournament for the first time since 1962. Washburn entered the hockey classic as the tournament underdog. In the first game, the Millers met Irondalc. After two periods of outstanding play, the Millers led 3-1. However, changing momentum coupled with a controversial illegal stick infraction enabled the Knights of Irondalc to advance to the semi-finals with a 6-4 victory. The Millers, showing a lot of spirit, rebounded one day later to defeat an excellent Harding team 5-1. Saturday afternoon in the consolation game, Washburn faced the task of competing with pretournament favorite Grand Rapids. Although the Millers played an excellent game, they were defeated 6-2 by a team with great tournament experience. ROW I: D. Peterson. J. Myhrc. R. Erdall. D. Lumbar. VI. Christman. J. Ilaug. S.
