BOYS’ STATE In June, 1976, four Washburn students were each sponsored by an American Legion Post to participate in Boys’ State at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. With over one hundred other state boys, they set up and elected a Minnesota government. Activities included party conventions, organizing platforms and listening to speakers. T. Petarson, J. Their coming to Washburn proved a meaningful experience for all as one foreigner said, “When I meet people from another country, it is so good.” ROW 1: Sac. L. Howard. Chair. L. Hoyt. ROW 2: B. Vossen The Student Council set out to increase and improve school spirit this year and through well-planned programs and an enthusiastic approach they met and exceeded this goal. A new advisor, Clifford Johnson, kept a watchful eye on the busy staff. In addition to donut dunks and directories, the council revived Blue Tri and Pep Club and branched off to form the Reach Committee. Pepfests and dances regained their vigor and auditoriums were restored to Washburn. The council fought for and won the privilege of having the Homecoming game played at home. Prom was once again a Washburn dance as the council pulled out of the West Area group. Monday morning homeroom announcements by student council brought members into direct contact with the student body. In turn, more and more people participated in the planning and fun of school sponsored activities. This was reflected in a phrase often heard, “Meet in room 015.” ROW 1: C. Michael. G. Rogers Advisor Dorothy Magnuson BLUE TRI After a three year absence at Washburn the Blue Tri organization made a hardy comeback. Composed of approximately fifty senior girls, Blue Tri met once a week to plan service to others and promote friendship and fellowship amongst themselves. During the holiday season the girls carolled at nursing homes and trimmed the halls of Washburn with decorations they had made. On Valentine’s Day Blue Tri sold carnations. In the spring the girls painted the field bleachers orange and blue, the school colors. Blue Tri is alive and well once again, doing what they can for the betterment of the school. 66
