Captained by Jim Dalton, Tom Lieberman, and Paul Rutt, the team gave a galliant try, but mistakes eventually took their toll in crucial games against Edison and Southwest. Plaqucd with injuries, lack of depth, and a tough schedule, the coaching staff made adjustments from week to week to turn in this respectful season. With key juniors returning and replacements from a winning sophomore team, football 1976 should again return the Millers to their usual number one standing. ROW I: T. Kaspcrek, J. Costello, M. They had problems earlier in the season, but pulled out of it and showed good passing and defense. By mid season the team was voted high in the state rating, and showed they could compete with any other team in the state. Goal tending was one of the strong points. The city title was not easy to come by, but through alot of hard work and practice, they did it. A slump late in the season, and some crucial injuries to key players, dampened WIIS’s tournament hopes as they were only able to finish third in the region. They started the season by finishing fourth in the Twin City meet. This was accomplished with the help of strong runners such as Scott Mayes and Travis Bailey. The team ended its season by finishing a disappointing sixth place in the Region D meet. The captain of the team was Scott Mayes. There were 60 underclassmen on the team. Inexperience was the main reason for the lower than expected finish. 81 I he 1974-75 cheerleading squad under advisor Clifford Johnson and captain Beth Frost was the largest squad ever at Washburn. The nineteen girls comprised the various sports and were able to cover all men's varsity athletics. The sophomores adapted to Washburn's hallowed halls with case, and some quickly learned that the fourth floor was out of sight. The first week of school brought many of us the realization that summer was something remembered. Welcome Week was a time for seeing old friends, becoming acquainted with new schedules and teachers, and remembering lock combinations. I I 112 The purpose of Welcome Week was to welcome everyone to the 1974-75 school year at Washburn. The week was opened with an auditorium. Student council president, Jody Olafson, introduced many of Washburn's teams and active members of the school's functions. Table Tennis 127 Washburn High School Washburn’s second annual Black History Week was again held in February. During homeroom on Monday, red. black, and green buttons with the letters T.W.C.M.l.H. standing for. “Together, we can make it happen” went on sale. Throughout the entire week, an interesting little essay about that certain day in black history was broadcast during homeroom. On Thursday, an auditorium presented many outstanding contributions of the Washburn students. That evening, with the participation of other West Area Schools, a large production at Central High School was given. The entire week was a learning experience, and each year seems to become more helpful and interesting. Sadie Hawkins Sadie Hawkins, thal foot stompin’ whale of a time, took place November 22. They also performed at Millwheels for two years in a row and participated in the 1974 Black History Week. The dance proved to be a success and made money for the committee. The dance, like SAC. was an effort to promote better race relations between students. I I SENIOR SNOW PARTY The woods of Camp Iduhapi provided a perfect setting for the senior snow party. Square dancing gave many kids the opportunity to thaw out frostbitten toes. Outdoor activities included sliding on mini-boggans down not-too-smooth hills and playing broomball on the pond. A good time was had by all. 134 Gary Braun and Bruce McLaughlin were the head hot dogs of the ski club this winter. Club members had somewhat of a big schuss on their trips to Thunder Bay and Utah. Mr. Burdette was the advisor this year and joined in on the fun. Ski members frequently suffered from fatigue from their long hours of skiing and many times were happy to settle for a QUILT evening! 135 £ '1(0.1 0 DEBATE Traveling ihroughoul ihc stale, the debate team met all major competing teams in our area. Professional choreography, a 27-piece orchestra, student director Lorre Lewis, and the artful leadership of Mr. Robert Krause made it all happen. It took place January 23 and 2A and the plot was the sale of Joe Boyd’s soul to the devil in exchange for a season’s career in baseball. The play took over two months to put together and a special thanks is in order for all who participated. Scott WEN Lom tPAHL fane. HARMS ON JteytYE •fay QU 66LE JMar 6 PE!
