Glimpses of W.H.S. 2 WAH1AN 1972 hopes to offer each student a worthy contribution to that remembrance. 7 'C As one thumbs through the pages of the 1972 WAN IAN, one cannot help but be impressed by the wide variety of activities that are available to the Washburn students. No one will argue with the thesis that the main objective of school is to prepare the student for adult life. If this is true, it would seem that students should take part in co curricular activities because there arc many lasting values from participation. The friendships that are formed and the experiences that arc enjoyed will be remembered long after graduation. I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate the WAHIAN staff on their fine portrayal of life at Washburn. Carl W. Anderson. Principal Administration 12 Wayne Courtney. Washburn -could justly claim “We’re number I again this year, as the football team finished with an impressive 8-0 city record. In the process, they broke 3 slate records: I) 18 interceptions 2) defense had only 18 points scored against them, and 3) won 34 consecutive games. Washburn football teams have now gone 48 games without a loss. Paul Domholt and Russ Anderson were elected to the ALl.-METRO squad, and Donihoil also made the ALL-STATE team. After defeating St. Paul Harding 21-8, the WHS football squad was able to present Washburn with 2 trophies to add to our collection. J.V. Football, ’71 It was a good season for the Bomber football squad. Spurred on by coaches Rutherford and Ario the team won three games, including their homecoming game against Vocational. These two returning sophomores will mean a big plus to the team for the next two years. This year was the first year that the boys elected tri-captains: Scott Baglicn, Tom Stake, and Jon Kachclmachcr. Coach Carlson commented that, “I’ve never seen a group of boys with a belter altitude, but the puck just didn’t bounce their way.” The team was set back by the loss of their veteran goalie. Geoff Middlcbrook. but found a young replacement in Tim Gjcrdc. Because the hockey team was not a “winning” team this year, fan support was poor. The team worked hard to give Washburn its best, and deserved a little less apathy from the student body. There’s always next year. BOTTOM ROW (L. TO R.): T. Gjcrdc, D. Ranum, D. Russ. M. Ryan. P. Next year looks hopeful as this year's divers, and 8th graders, (ireg Ulrich and Marc Fuller, will return to competition along with the juniors on the team. Attendance records were up this year as shouts of go down with the gun. “faster, faster,” Hold steady. and stand up” were heard. As an added incentive for the spectators. Mr. Filer gave occasional diving exhibitions, receiving high marks from Mr. Cersine and strange looks and applause from spectators. Captains: R.SloppcIman. T.Simon-sen. In addition, it placed fifth in the District, and sent four team members to the Regional meet. With the crowd of interested spectators increasing every year, the team feels it will have the experience and support it needs to push for the top next year. BOTTOM ROW (L. TO R): J. Moe. D. Ohme. K. For the first time, this year the team had to be cut because so many people tried out for it. Another new innovation was a girls’ ski team that raced against girls' teams from other schools. Since most of the skiiers this year will be returning, the team has high hopes for itself next year. CITY STANDINGS WASHBURN ... The council's main objective was to have the year full of fun activities, some for only Blue-Tri members, and some for the whole school. The Council met over the summer for the purpose of getting to know each other, to work together better, and to organize Blue-Tri activities. An all-school activity was planned for each month with various other programs in between. Some of the all-school activities included: a sex fair with speakers on abortion, birth control, and homosexuality, an alternate life-styles symposium, overnights at the downtown Y, and. of course, the Blue-Tri Semi-Formal. Blue-Tri's year-long service project was the collection of glass for crushing and recycling; at one such collection twenty tons of glass were amassed. All these activities helped to prove true the Blue-Tri slogan: It'll be the best year yet! 66 Y-advisor: Mary Finnegan CHAPTER TWO; BOTTOM ROW L. TO R L Reagan; J. Ujifusa. A. Johnson (Pres.); C. As always, the newspaper was voluntarily supported; it is the only school paper in the city that does not require all students to subscribe to it. The hard work and imagination of the Gristers brought many new innovations to the paper. A Classified Ads section was started, in which students could print anything (within reason) for free. A series of articles on Community Services, such as the Pharm House, was printed to increase the student awareness of such services. Polls were taken to determine the students' interests, and articles and interviews were written in accordance with the results of the polls. All this made the Grist an outstanding newspaper. With no idea of where to begin and a deadline in four weeks, the Wahian staff began to slowly learn the mechanics of putting a yearbook together. Because of a lack of money, the staff began a fund-raising drive. Parents, local businesses, and friends, became Patrons to the yearbook by buying space for advertising or personal messages. The Bobbscy Twins Countless hours and sleepless nights went into the making of the 1972 Wahian. Photographs, lay-outs, and copy were coordinated to try to present a unique yearbook. In the fall we had a sports awards auditorium and pep fests for such things as Welcome Week and Homecoming. Previews of the Senior Class Play and Millwheels were presented. On the serious side we had an informational auditorium about precinct caucuses, and auditoriums during the Black-White tension after several incidents were reported. The auditoriums were held to give the students an opportunity to express their feelings on the matter and discuss possible solutions. On the theatrical side, there was an auditorium of short, one-act plays that were student directed. On the fun side was the long, but enjoyable Snow Week assembly. Assemblies Welcome Week ’71 Seniors: King Dave Thuraldson and Queen Vicki Erickson. Juniors: King Tom Person and Queen Linda Blaitic Have you ever tasted a Krispy Kreme crown? The answer is probably yes if you attended the Welcome Week Dance. Friday, September 10. Sophomores: King Sieve Broberg and Queen Bcih Gulbrandson The dance lopped off the Welcome Week activities as Washburnites danced to the pounding music of “Shepard.’ crowned friendship royalty. and got a free sauna courtesy of the suffocating heat in the gym. The week began with a short Tuesday schedule and ended Friday with a Welcome Week auditorium featuring Neil Danahy. a former Washburn student, playing the guitar and singing songs of his own creation. The cheerleaders cheered, the Millcrmatcs danced, the Friendship candidates were introduced. and Maria Miro and Arturo Vale ., our Rotary students, were presented to the student body. 133 Washburn Homecoming is ... . Homecoming week began with an auditorium revealing a variety of talents ranging from high kicks and low notes, to fast songs and sick jokes. That afternoon it looked like rain, and right before game lime, it started. The result.. .mudbowl U.S.A. Umbrellas opened and hair frizzed as the hearty Washhurn fans watched their team beat Southwest 28-12. Halftime came and so did the floats, bearing our royal couples and five umbrellas. As the Millcrmates danced the crowd wondered: Will they do the splits in the mud? The answer? Yes... Ugh! A special coronation was organized for Thursday night to insure a truly enthusiastic crowd. The program began by introducing the team captains of all sports. The excited crowd was hushed as Chip Kulczycki was announced King. They waited in anticipation as Chip opened the envelope revealing the name of the new Homecoming Queen... Debbie Jorgenson. The Homcconing events were topped off by the traditional semi-formal dance. This year's band was a “heavy-rock group called Cisco Grove. Activities consisted of dancing, listening to the band, and getting pictures taken. Most people at the dance ended their evening with a quiet candlelight dinner. 134 Wet and Wild!!!! Before and after. 20 minutes'till curtain! In .the spring of 71, Mr. Olson decided to expand Washburn's drama program. The result... Funny Girl, a hit musical. Auditions were open to all classes and a lot of good talent was discovered. Six weeks and many long hours of preparation were put into the production, lilaboratc costumes and set construction added to the play's success. The actors gave up their afternoons, evenings, and Spring vacation for rehearsals. The performances were excellent, as shown by the over-all enthusiasm of the audiences. I think you're bluffing! All-Class Play. . . Funny Girl Rat4al a4al tul-tat... Hurrah! I must relieve my bowels. I can’t hear a word your saying! Le Malade Imaginaire To be ybur slave and... and From dropsy into death!! Mr. Olson carried on Washburn’s tradition of theatrical excellence with the production of this year’s Senior Class Play, LE MALADE IMAG-INAIRE, (The Imaginary Invalid). Give your money to an intimate friend of your wife’s. ...husband! With an unusually small cast of only twelve actors, this French farce by Moliere was a smashing success. Despite the five short weeks of preparation, the play had professional polish, thanks to the hard work of cast and crew members. Student Directors: Jon Halpern and Janet Peterson. Dogpatch came to Washburn on November 12 this year, as the newswriting staff sponsored the annual Sadie Hawkins dance. Sadie Hawkins This year besides the regular band, there was a square dance caller. The gym was packed as dancers tried to figure out which was their left hand for the promenade left. If one didn't feel like dancing, there were numerous games to play .... football toss, basketball throw, and the doughnut walk to name a few. You could have your picture taken if you were willing to wait in line. Located in various nooks and crannies in the halls were the aisles leading to the Marry in Sams’ altars. For the “Po unfortunate bo ' that happened to be “trapped” into matrimony and was seeking a way out, new this year there was Divorcin' Dan. However, contrary to national averages, there were only two divorces performed the whole evening... which goes to show that when a Washburn girl gets her man, she's not likely to give him up easily. 142 Snow Queen and Snow King Colleen Sherrill and l)avc Murphy Snow Week . . . This year’s Snow Week was apparently unhampered by the severe cold. We were warmed by hot chocolate and dougnnuts in the midst of it all on Wednesday, at the Donut Dunk. Seniors bundled up and braved the cold for the annual Senior Snow Party. The Week's festivities were topped off by the auditorium on Friday. The traditional guerning and leg contests were held to select Snow Queen and Snow King, and the winner of the Cake-Fating Contest was crowned Snow Pig. Fqual time was given to the women in the first Marshmallow-Stuffing Contest to choose Snow Sow. A co-ed student team beat the faculty in the All-Star Volleyball game. Nice going team! Was Fun . . . Sno Millwheels More Raisins. . . Lots More Raisins! The ihcmc for Millwheels this year was “Everything's Coming up Raisins, ' and everything certainly was. This -original theme was carried out through the whole show with raisin singers, raisin skits, raisin stage hands, and a huge raisin bowl. In addition to raisins, there was a variety of other Washburn talent. The Millcrmates did several dance numbers, different groups of students performed skits and variety numbers, and much musical talent was displayed by way of singing and playing of instruments. It was a roof-raisin show. 147 After weeks of hard work, the annual Blue-Tri Semi-Formal was held at the downtown YWCA. Despite the moderate publicity campaign, there was a large turnout. Pictures were taken and refreshments, (punch and cookies), were served in the elegant lounge, where couples could relax from dancing. Other couples danced to the music of the band Ginger, in Benton Hall. Old rock and roll hits seemed to be the favorite of many couples. All that remains now are the formats, blue garters, paper flowers, and memories of a beautiful evening. 148 Blue-Tri Semi-Formal Snow-Ball ’72 Wc, the Class of 1972, wish to dedicate this Wahian to the memory of Margaret Mary Mahoney. August 28, 1954-August 9, 1971 “All we need to make the day go belter is to remember our friends, or maybe one friend's face. -Bessie Lorraine Bales “There is no beauty of complexion, or form, or behavior, like the wish to scatter joy around us. -Ralph Waldo Emerson PHILIP AAKER Phil was a member of the Ski Club, N.H.S..
