This year's WAHIAN Staff, headed by Lynn Vluedeking and advised by Mr. Wald, combined persistance and hard work to compose a book of memories for the Class of '69. Preparing a yearbook provided valuable experience in writing copy, assembling layouts, and writing captions. Several members of the staff attended lectures at the University of Minnesota concerning the preparation of a book for publication. Amid layouts and deadlines the yearbook staffers found time to redecorate the WAHIAN room. The rejuvination included a new coat of paint and varied artistic designs. Business manager, Mary Hurwitz, arranged the financial affairs of the WAHIAN. In addition to the sales drive, a stag dance was held and pictures were sold. 116

Honors And Serves This year the National Honor Society was the largest ever at Washburn. Comprised of the top twenty per cent of the senior class, the members were chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Although primarily an honor society, NHS served the school by ushering for the PTSA Open House, tutoring, and substituting for teachers in emergencies. The organization operated a bookstore during the lunch hour which made paperback books available at wholesale prices. Profits from handling the commencement announcements allowed the organization to leave a gift for the school. This year the members voted to change the organizations constitution so that students may l e inducted only during the spring of their junior year and fall of their senior year. NHS continued its effort to find ways to make education more meaningful. NHS Officers: Hill, President; Gundy. Secretary; Haxby. Vice-President Rich Hill sells hooks. 118
