Business skills pay off in many ways. Students Learn Business Skills Many students plan for the future by taking high school business courses offered at Washburn. The department, under the direction of Mr. Johnson, teaches students the basics of typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and other business skills. Classes were moved into the new addition where electric typewriters and dictaphones were made available to the students. Practice is a necessary part of typing. Beginning typists acquire skills for future life. Our new steno labs offer individual attention. 28

To the students: Carl W. Anderson. Principal Russell L. Helleckson. Assistant Principal The years ahead will certainly represent a time of challenge to you graduating seniors. The world you will live in will present you with such complex problems that it would be impossible for anyone to describe them. It will certainly require that you have a higher degree of imagination and courage than any other generation. The most pressing challenge will be the perennial search for peace among the nations of the world. No generation, as yet. has succeeded in solving this problem, and it will be your responsibility to see to it that some solution is found, so that there will be a future on this planet for the human race. This search will require more understanding and patience than the present leadership in the world has exhibited. I am optimistic enough to believe that you will succeed. Another area of challenge will be the problems created by a highly mechanized and automated world. The benefits to mankind will be many, but only if people learn to use their leisure time in a meaningful way. There is abundant evidence that we have trouble in this area at the present time. Perhaps, your generation will learn to lead richer, fuller lives than we have lived in the past. Please accept my best wishes for the future. Carl W. Anderson 30 Administration Provides Leadership
