The choir classes, under the direction of Mr. Lydell, enjoyed their first full year in the new addition. They found the improved acoustics and cheerful atmosphere in their spacious accommodations to be a great advantage. The Choraliers performed on television and with the Civic Orchestra. They also sang in three concerts at Washburn. The enlarged girls' choir and the two madrigal groups contributed their time to singing in hospitals and senior citizen homes. In addition to his other classes. Mr. Lydell taught a music theory class in which students learned the techniques of harmony, chord writing, music analysis, and composition. This class gave students who were interested in music a unique background for future studies. Of Glad Hearts Choir concert climaxes weeks of practices. First Row: Burniece. Mueller. Hawley. Flygarc. For This Year Washburn has instrumental talent in both director and students. Mr. Eli Barnett, our new band and orchestra director, developed a truly fine concert orchestra. His many years of music background also enabled him to build a strong marching and concert band. Under the leadership of Washburn's drum major. Bert Burwell. the marching band displayed colorful and interesting field programs. Drum majorettes and flag twirlers added greatly to the appearance of this performing group. Our excellent stage band entertained Washburn’s listening audiences. Home basketball games and auditoriums heard the rousing sounds of our new pep band. Bert leads the marching band.
