Washburn's mathematicians must struggle through similar problems every day. With the newly-accelerated program, students study plane and solid geometry as sophomores. Juniors spend their time on advanced algebra and trigonometry, while a few brave seniors attempt math analysis. An indication of the high quality of our mathematics department is the fact that Washburn students are able to place high in the Minnesota State Math Contest each year. Through Language We Communicate Language labs bring the voices of the world to Washburn students. Enthusiasm and initiative characterized this year’s language department. Washburn offered courses in Latin. French. German, and Spanish. A new feature of the language department, which reflected the enthusiasm of Washburn students, was the no-credit Russian class taught after school by Mr. Dunn. After last summer, students plunged back into their study of verb forms. This summer. German students will be able to study and tour in Europe. By taking advantage of this type of opportunity. Washburn students are able to gain a better understanding of foreign cultures. Peg Kantar concentrates on Spanish dialog. Mr. Austin checks students’ progress.

Our world includes the very small. Curiosity is aroused in Mr. Science Creates With microscope, pulley, and test tube. Washburn students explored the wonders of biology, physics, and chemistry. In biology sophomores studied the physiology and anatomy of living organisms. With the aid of new techniques and equipment, they learned to recognize the regularities and diversities in their natural surroundings. Physical science acquainted juniors with the fundamental principles of matter and motion. Physics courses covered such areas as mechanics, heat, electricity, and sound. Students examine the results of their experiments.
