Many books make choosing difficult. English Is A Key Nancy Aaker listens intently. Variety was the key word for Washburn’s English department this year, as students concentrated on literature. Shakespeare, grammar, and composition. In addition, word study, speech, drama, and creative writing offered seniors a less conventional approach to our language. Sophomores spent much time preparing for the minimum essentials test, as well as studying American literature. For a change of pace, juniors studied Shakespeare’s plays one semester. Seniors in creative writing classes were seen popping popcorn, playing with silly stuff, and looking at unusual pictures to encourage more detailed observations of our surroundings. The drama classes helped to present three one-act plays in January. as well as working on the senior play. Speech classes gave students self-confidence as they learned to express their ideas. Such diversity in courses greatly enhances Washburn's English department. 12
