English Is A Key Nancy Aaker listens intently. Variety was the key word for Washburn’s English department this year, as students concentrated on literature. Shakespeare, grammar, and composition. In addition, word study, speech, drama, and creative writing offered seniors a less conventional approach to our language. Sophomores spent much time preparing for the minimum essentials test, as well as studying American literature. For a change of pace, juniors studied Shakespeare’s plays one semester. Seniors in creative writing classes were seen popping popcorn, playing with silly stuff, and looking at unusual pictures to encourage more detailed observations of our surroundings. The drama classes helped to present three one-act plays in January. as well as working on the senior play. Speech classes gave students self-confidence as they learned to express their ideas. Such diversity in courses greatly enhances Washburn's English department. 12 Reassembling a library can be a big job. To Understanding Pat Smith shows creativity in motion The Zest of Klobuchar Now where did I put my glasses?” 13 UhZ ■ Our World Is Tomorrow’s History Maps help students gain perspective. This year’s social studies department greeted Washburnites with a curriculum change. Sophomores are now taking only world history, while juniors take American history. A new advanced junior class, taught by Mr. Daniel, gives talented students an in-depth study of social studies. New books were purchased for the entire department. Many seniors found their social studies courses more challenging than in previous years. By studying economics and government. seniors learned how our governmental and economical systems are organized. Selected students from Mr. Carlson's economics classes were allowed to work independently on special term projects. The seniors were offered electives in sociology, the study of man’s interaction; psychology, the study of man's mind; and philosophy, the study of logic. These and other courses helped further students’ understanding of the world in which they live. Students learn that the world is our window on a challenging future. 14 Visual aids give new dimension to history. Mr. Daniel makes a point. Mr. Ario creates a relaxed atmosphere. With Kent, it's all in a day's work. Mrs. Bolsterh inspires interest. 13 Through Language We Communicate Language labs bring the voices of the world to Washburn students. Enthusiasm and initiative characterized this year’s language department. Washburn offered courses in Latin. French. German, and Spanish. A new feature of the language department, which reflected the enthusiasm of Washburn students, was the no-credit Russian class taught after school by Mr. Dunn. After last summer, students plunged back into their study of verb forms. This summer. German students will be able to study and tour in Europe. By taking advantage of this type of opportunity. Washburn students are able to gain a better understanding of foreign cultures. Peg Kantar concentrates on Spanish dialog. Mr. Austin checks students’ progress. Students spend study hour puzzling over math problems. Math Proves An Exacting Science Mr. Cosgrove reviews algebraic formulas. 2 3.14x4 3.14x5 2 V=S0 16 dx= 80 o=1-257cu m- Perhaps this seems confusing! Washburn's mathematicians must struggle through similar problems every day. With the newly-accelerated program, students study plane and solid geometry as sophomores. Juniors spend their time on advanced algebra and trigonometry, while a few brave seniors attempt math analysis. An indication of the high quality of our mathematics department is the fact that Washburn students are able to place high in the Minnesota State Math Contest each year. Complexities of the parabola confront students. Got a pink certificate. Governor? (V jJ ut - dJMt ft Our world includes the very small. Curiosity is aroused in Mr. Science Creates With microscope, pulley, and test tube. Washburn students explored the wonders of biology, physics, and chemistry. In biology sophomores studied the physiology and anatomy of living organisms. With the aid of new techniques and equipment, they learned to recognize the regularities and diversities in their natural surroundings. Physical science acquainted juniors with the fundamental principles of matter and motion. Physics courses covered such areas as mechanics, heat, electricity, and sound. Students examine the results of their experiments. H Traynor's biology class. Our New World Chemistry analyzes the composition and transformation of chemicals. From the results of experiments, seniors formulated general conclusions about the laws of nature. Knowledge gained in science classes prepares students to meet the growing challenges of a scientifically inclined world. But more importantly, it increases their understanding of the environment in which they live. Physics generates student interest. Pickled animals await dissection. It's all in the technique. 19 Girls Prepare For Homemaking Students enjoy new facilities. Cookie decorating takes time and patience. On many occasions during the past year, the delightful aroma of pies, cakes, and cookies filled the halls of Washburn. In addition to cooking, girls learned sewing, interior decorating, and cleaning in home economics classes. The girls took full advantage of the newly-remodeled classrooms this year. New ranges and dishwashers were among the many appliances recently installed, the girls also hosted several teas and parties in the new dining room-living room accommodations. These modernized facilities greatly aided students as they studied the fundamentals of home-making and home economics. Culinary talents are developed in cooking class. A skirt takes shape. Shops are updated and techniques improved. Drafting calls for precision and concentration. Industrial Arts Opens Boys Futures Boys discuss current problems in electronics. The industrial arts department underwent extensive change this year. Not only were the traditional courses of drafting and woodworking offered, but also courses in metals and electronics. These classes necessitated the addition of two new teachers. Mr. Hol-strom and Mr. Krook. Classrooms in the new addition, were equipped with modern machinery; however, students were handicapped by the fact that the machines did not arrive until several months after the opening of school. Woodworking provides a constructive outlet for students. Mr. Schauer teaches students new techniques. Art Encourages Self-Expression Through art students gain a new dimension in self-expression. They learn to communicate their ideas of reality in various shapes and forms. Under the supervision of Mr. Schauer. students in Washburn's art classes were taught a variety of techniques. Advanced classes worked with clay sculpture and acrylics and experimented in op art. During the winter students also had the unique opportunity of sculpting in ice. Beginning students, on the other hand, received instruction in various mediums of drawing. The works of three Washburn students were selected for an international art tour. The students, seniors Mary Cripps. Dawn Gessner, and Steve Yerigan. depicted various aspects of Minneapolitan life. Their pieces will tour South America. Europe, and the United States until 1969. A lump of clay takes form. Boys compete, though it seems to be a toss-up. Landin takes time-out after vigorous exercise. We Gain Vitality Through Athletics Fitness is essential for the future. One of the most important improvements in years for the physical education department was the opening of the new gymnasium and the rejuvenation of the old. Juniors who had the privilege of using the new gym found the new locker rooms particularly appealing, except perhaps for the controversial showers. Sophomores, who used the old gymnasiums. had the unique opportunity of participating in experimental co-ed classes. Miss Thurston relays a message. 23 GIRLS' CHOIR First Row: Hawkins. Lind. Schulz. They found the improved acoustics and cheerful atmosphere in their spacious accommodations to be a great advantage. The Choraliers performed on television and with the Civic Orchestra. They also sang in three concerts at Washburn. The enlarged girls' choir and the two madrigal groups contributed their time to singing in hospitals and senior citizen homes. In addition to his other classes. Mr. Lydell taught a music theory class in which students learned the techniques of harmony, chord writing, music analysis, and composition. His many years of music background also enabled him to build a strong marching and concert band. Under the leadership of Washburn's drum major. Bert Burwell. the marching band displayed colorful and interesting field programs. Drum majorettes and flag twirlers added greatly to the appearance of this performing group. Our excellent stage band entertained Washburn’s listening audiences. Home basketball games and auditoriums heard the rousing sounds of our new pep band. Bert leads the marching band. The department, under the direction of Mr. Johnson, teaches students the basics of typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and other business skills. Classes were moved into the new addition where electric typewriters and dictaphones were made available to the students. Practice is a necessary part of typing. Beginning typists acquire skills for future life. Our new steno labs offer individual attention. 28 FACULTY To the students: Carl W. Anderson. Principal Russell L. Helleckson. Assistant Principal The years ahead will certainly represent a time of challenge to you graduating seniors. The world you will live in will present you with such complex problems that it would be impossible for anyone to describe them. It will certainly require that you have a higher degree of imagination and courage than any other generation. The most pressing challenge will be the perennial search for peace among the nations of the world. No generation, as yet. has succeeded in solving this problem, and it will be your responsibility to see to it that some solution is found, so that there will be a future on this planet for the human race. This search will require more understanding and patience than the present leadership in the world has exhibited. I am optimistic enough to believe that you will succeed. Another area of challenge will be the problems created by a highly mechanized and automated world. The benefits to mankind will be many, but only if people learn to use their leisure time in a meaningful way. There is abundant evidence that we have trouble in this area at the present time. Perhaps, your generation will learn to lead richer, fuller lives than we have lived in the past. Please accept my best wishes for the future. Carl W. The counseling staff enjoyed another busy year. Mr. Rustad and Mr. Evenson counseled seniors in planning their future education and goals. The junior class was guided by Miss Magnuson and Mr. Swiderski in program planning and other problems. The task of helping sophomores make adjustments to high school life was performed by Miss Paleen with the aid of Mr. Swiderski. Miss Donohue. our permanent social worker, dealt with students in school adjustments and problems of their outside world. The counseling office serves over 2.000 individuals, each with a unique need. The job they have performed is a credit to the counseling staff. Test scores aid counselors in guiding students. Although these new rooms alleviated crowding, many teachers were still peripatetic. Because of the rapid progress being made in various subjects, many teachers returned to school to take advanced studies. Some of these teachers attended summer and night school at the University of Minnesota. Others. like Mr. Stein, took leaves for further graduate work. Mrs. Mueller and Mr. Diehl headed the teacher’s social committee which planned faculty activities. The professional committee. directed by Mr. Flugstad. met to analyze and discuss problems affecting faculty-student relations. 34 Helen Minty Madeline Monson Arlene Mueller Oavid Nelson Joan Nordberg Mary Ann Orlowski Stanley Person Carol Peterson Alfred Potter James Powers Alan Rasmussen Lenus Ritter Ronald Rogers David Ruliffson James Rutherford Eugene Sandvig August Schauer Louden Schlagel Raymond Smith John Stephens Dorothy Stevenson Keith Stitzel George Sverdrup Patricia Day Leila Thompson Margaret Thurston Gary Traynor 35 Bruce Turnbaugh Gary Wald Armilla Walsh Daynor Weis Versatile Teachers Fill Many Roles Mr. Flugtad steadies his nerves. This year’s Blue Tri combined service with sociability to make the year both enjoyable and educational. The sound judgments of Miss Temple and Mrs. Conrad, along with the efficient leadership of the Blue Tri Council, lent organization to the Blue Tri program. The all-school service project this year was promoting blood donations to the kidney foundation. Blue Tri groups held social events this year that were as original and entertaining as they were varied. The traditional broom hockey games were replaced by a powder-puff football tournament, highlighted by a victory over Southwest. To earn money, girls bought and sold Blue Tri slumber shirts in blue and orange. A Holiday Chapel Service took the place of the Christmas Service and featured contemporary dance and music. The annual Blue Tri semi-formal dance held last January. was built around the theme of Winter Wonderland. The year of entertainment and vigorous leadership was terminated by the traditional Senior Farewell, with the candlelight induction of next year’s leaders. Miller. Fourth Row: Mueller. Shatter. The GRIST sought alternately to expose the evils of the school system and to instill school spirit through information on sports and school events. Student controversies were stirred by satirical articles and editorials. Drugs, grading systems, and student dress codes came under fire as the GRIST provided an outlet for student expression. For the first semester, a junior newswriting class aided the GRIST staff by writing articles during their fourth hour class. A Acknowledgements Writing copy, taking pictures, and writing captions and headlines all played important parts in the formation of this year’s yearbook. Spending many hours, both duringand after school, the members of the WAHIAN staff struggled to meet their deadlines in order to form a complete story of the school year. The 1968 WAHIAN was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the WAHIAN staff, our advisor. Mr. Wald, our professional photographer. Mr. Lundgren. and our advisor from the American Yearbook Company. Mr. Hedstrom. We thank Washburn High School for the donation of old shop store room for use as our own room. To Mr. Wald we want to extend our warmest appreciation for his calm leadership during our deadline crises. We would also like to give credit to the Minneapolis Star and Tribune for two of the pictures on pages 6 and 7. Each member of the staff deserves credit for his particular part in putting the book together, and a special thanks goes to Larry Davenport who. besides being one of the School Life editors, also took on the job of photographer.
