WHS ls Filled with In the past, students who wanted to play instruments displayed their talents in the marching band, the sym- phonic band, or the orchestra. This year, Mr. Lagios, who has directed the instrumental music department since l964, has added a stage band. The members of this loand, who were chosen loy audition only, per- formed the works ot the great iazzmasters. Under the leadership of Mr. Lagios, the orchestra was given a rating of excellent by the iudges at the 1965 State Music Contest, the first time since i959 that Washburn's orchestra has won such an honor. Today's Skills Open Tomorrow's Doorways A future stenographer shows her skill. Classes in business skills train students for various vocational opportunities. In this field, Washburn offers typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, steno and office skills, business law, and consumer economics. Many students participate in the work program. For this on-the-iob training, they receive the equivalent of two credits in a classroom. Washburn's home economics department prepares students for their future responsibilities by offering classes in cooking and sewing. The newly added equipment aids the girls in the cooking department, where the main emphasis has been placed on the fundamentals of meal planning. A course in home and family living is also offered. This class seeks to aid students in the preparation for their own homes and families. The tailoring class teaches girls how to properly fit and tailor the garments they have made. The newly added sewing machines have made many students' work easier and more enioyable this year. The industrial arts classes prove gratifying and useful Learning to operate business machines adds up to a good iob. Using a T-square takes practice and patience. 'Q to many boys. Skills learned in woodworking and mechanical drawing are practical for home use and also can be applied to various hobbies and vocations. Under skillful hands a skirt begins to take shape.
