Science Department The Science department of Washburn seeks to provide students with a basic understanding of the scientific method and a few of its many applications. Lectures and laboratory sessions are part of the learning process for science students. The biology, physics, and chemistry courses are all designed to develop in the students an understanding of the natural and physical laws which govern the universe. Biology students examined various forms of animal and plant life to gain a firsthand knowledge of zoology and botany. Through dissection, they learned the functions of living things and received a small idea of the intricacies of life. Studies were made of tiny forms of life, and finally of the human body and its complexities. In the physics classes, which were recently remodeled, students explored the laws of matter and energy regarding light, heat, sound, mechanics, electricity, and magnetism. As an aid to understanding, experiments were made with these properties. New textbooks, stressing the use of mathe- matics in understanding facts and ideas, were used. Chemistry classes used a new chem-study textbook and new equipment in probing the wonders of chemi- cals. Frequent experimentation with chemicals was combined with an effort to learn something about the theory of chemical reactions. The science classes provide systematic knowledge for under- standing our age. ii 3 l ,.., 'Wh 1 Students discuss the intricacies of physics. Physics students measure and record reflections.

Washburnites Learn Linguistic Arts Mr. Rutherford tunes in as students drill. The language labs, with their microphones, headsets, and tapes, give the students the opportunity to hear native speakers. At the master controls, the teacher can provide individual instruction without disturbing the progress of the rest of the class. The language department, headed by Mr. Rutherford, includes classes in Spanish, German, French, and Latin. Last summer, a group ot Spanish students spent seventeen days touring Mexico. They formed small groups and investigated Mexico City, Taxco, Mon- terrey, and Acapulco. Mr. Dills has spent two years planning a tour of Europe for students in the summer ot 1966. Wi!
