Speech classes offer expression of ideas. 1 6 5 5 Q 5 Ai l. us. A Q The key to English learning lies in its textbooks. Hub of the Wheel of Education English is one of the most extensive subject areas at Washburn. It includes library research, minimum essentials tests, reports, and poetry recitations as well as the required units in literature, composition, and grammar. Annual visits to the Guthrie are offered to students who are interested in seeing professional performances of Shakespearean plays. There are several opportunities for students to take advantage of the specialized courses offered. Creative writing helps the students learn self-expres- sion. Poise and self-confidence may be gained through a course in speech. Students in the word study classes work to increase their command of the English language. The courses in English required for graduation also contain units which cover these subiect areas, but not in great depth. While the seniors may take any of the above courses as electives, the iuniors are required to take a semes- ter of Shakespeare. This class covers the better-known Shakespearean plays and the Elizabethan Era. Sophomores study the fundamentals of grammar and contemporary and early American literature. It is not possible for one to take advantage of all the various courses in English offered to students at Washburn as part of the senior year, but each one is an opportunity in itself. They are all helpful no matter where one's interests lie. Washburnites enjoy their annual visit to the Guthrie Theatre. -9 . g f
