LANGUAGES ARE IMPORTANT IN A QHRINKING WORLD For the first time language laboratory facilities vvere available to those studying the modern languages: French, Spanish, and German. This equipment, con- sisting of headphones with attached microphones, greatly aided both the students and the teacher. A tape recording of phrases spoken in the foreign tongue vvas played. Students repeated these phrases into their individual microphones free from outside distractions. The teacher, by means of a control panel, was able to listen to each student individually or to the class as a vvhole. lt was also possible for the teacher to speak to individuals through the headphones with- out interrupting the rest of the class. Enclosed indi- vidual booths vvere also available for special uses. The only language offered at Washburn that could not make practical use of these facilities was Latin. Although nowadays one does not become fluent in the speaking of Latin, it is very helpful in other ways. Because Latin students study the intricacies of Latin grammar, they are vvell prepared to study modern languages and to better understand their ovvn. Because vve live in an ever-shrinking vvorld and at a time vvhen world communications are a prime con- cern of everyone, languages are playing an increas- ingly important role. Through hard work students make good use of the lan- guage lab facilities. Clnq quatre trois deux un Sauter'
