MUSIC AND ART Art is one of the many fields in which Washburn-ites show their creative abilities. Basic art stresses the use of art in our daily living. It introduces the student to the use of many mediums and techniques. Music is another popular subject at Washburn. There arc three choruses: girls’ chorus, male chorus, and mixes chorus. Our band and orchestra always perform at many of the school functions. Varsity Hockey Coach, Sophomore Football Coach, Sophomore Track Coach. Fred Curtis: Modern Problems, Swimming Coach, Tennis Coach. Mark Goodman: History, Audio-Visual Adviser, Student Council Adviser. William Kuross: History, Assistant Varsity Football Coach, Ski (k ach. Intramural Basketball Coach, Lettermen’s Club Adviser. Mrs. Marilyn Kutish: History, SOCIAL STUDIES Roy Lindstedt: History. Miss Dorothy Peterson: History. Louden Schlagel: History, Debate Coach. Raymond Smith: History, Faculty Manager of Athletics. Social studies give us insight into the various civilizations now in existence. United States History in a World Setting is a two-year course-mandatory at Washburn. World history and American history are-included in the course. Modern problems, offered only to seniors, includes economics, psychology, and American government. 11

MATH AND SCIENCE Math is taken by almost all Washburn students. Geometry, advanced algebra, solid geometry and trigonometry are usually taken in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades, respectively. Accelerated courses arc very popular among the mathematically inclined students. In the accelerated program, sophomores take plain geometry and solid geometry in one year. Juniors take advanced algebra and trigonometry in one year. In their last year, seniors take college math. Science is stressed at Washburn since, with the coming of the space ago, it will play an important part in our future. Although the science program varies somewhat, biology is usually taken by sophomores, physics by juniors, and chemistry by seniors. Biology ami chemistry are the two most popular sciences. Students taking chemistry, physics, and biology were somewhat handicapped the first semester because the renovation of the laboratories had not been completed. Track Coach, Wrestling Coach. Cross Country Coach. Raymond Ross: Boys’ Physical Education. Basic business, business law, bookkeeping, shorthand, typing, occupational relations, and office training arc offered as practical training and experience in the Business Education Department. Applied Arts includes woodworking, mechanical drawing, cooking, sewing, and family living. These courses arc valuable assets to a student's knowledge. The Phy-cd program at Washburn is mandatory to all sophomores and juniors. All juniors arc required to take a course in Health as part of their Phy-cd training.
