ENLIGHTENING 6 Mr. Carl W. Anderson, principal Washburn’s principal, Mr. Carl Anderson, is one of the outstanding school administrators in the state of Minnesota. He has been principal at Washburn for four years. Hiring new teachers, promoting good teacher-student relations, and assigning classes to the faculty arc a few of his many duties. Mr. Anderson has gained recognition outside of school by being elected president of the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals. He also served as vice-president of this organization for two years. We at Washburn arc privileged and proud to have Mr. Anderson as our principal. Our country has been blessed with many of the necessary ingredients for greatness. We all (now that nature has given us a bountiful heritage of soil, streams, forests, and minerals. The most important ingredient for greatness, however, is not these resources, but the human resources and the extent of their development. Those of us who are engaged in secondary education (now how important it is that each student be developed according to his abilities to the limit of his capacity. This is an ideal which is not always realised but which we must always strive for. It ts our hope that you seniors will not feel that your education has terminated, but that it has only begun. In a sense, it is what you do from now on, and not what you have already accomplished, which will determine how successful our efforts have been. Good !uc ( to all of you. Li) (X JuU Mr Carl W. Foreign students... our world grows smaller Don’t just stand there, get a shovel! Through the efforts of exchange student programs, the nations of the world may exchange ideas and promote understanding. Washburn was fortunate this year to have four foreign exchange students: Dona Gahutti from Italy, Renatc Bcnlecr from Germany, Teresa Liebstcr from Venezuela, and Poul Kandrup from Denmark. Dona participated in the drama plays and was active in the language clubs. She claims that she has found more pizza in America than in Italy. Teresa missed the large bananas, as popular and widely used in Venezuela as potatoes arc here, but liked the public school system. Renate thought that the Minnesota climate was too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. Mostly she missed her gymnastic club in Germany. Poul, who enjoyed all his subjects at Washburn, missed the carefree pastime and good exercise of riding his bike. Meredith Jewson was our representative abroad this year. Meredith spent the summer in Finland, where she stayed with two different families and shared their family life. Student Council . . . voice of the student body Washburn’s Student Council is the voice of the student body in school affairs. Through the council’s efforts, student activities and projects are carried out. This past year the council consisted of twenty-four members, eight from each class. Under the capable leadership of President Paul Norton, the council was able to accomplish much. Always ready to assist was competent Vice-president Walt Bachman. The efficient secretaries, Liz Liston, recording, and Nancy Lamson, corresponding, rendered invaluable services. All money matters were handled by able Treasurer Gavin Wright. Helpful aid and advice were given by Mr. Goodman, faculty adviser. Among the many activities and projects s| onsorcd by the Student Council were homecoming festivities, formals, stag dances, Welcome Week, planting new poplar trees, distributing booster buttons and school pens, anti |X)sting a monthly calendar of school events. 86 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Row 1: Holton, Eltton, Nut. Under the watchful eye of our adviser, Miss Trowbridge, the editors, Julie Gud-tncstad and Byron Nordstrom, worked with the staff to meet deadlines. The finished product went to press in April, and the staff anxiously awaited distribution of the WAHIAN in June. Financial problems were handled by Loren Hos-ficld, our efficient business manager. She pointed out how extra enjoyment in everyday life can be found by having a poet’s interest and curiosity. The 1961 Poplars, our annual literary magazine was put out by twenty-one creative Washburnites. Editor Diane Brooks and adviser. There was a cosmopolitan committee in the Politix ('lub this year which consisted of APS students. This committee conducted several programs throughout the year. The club also entertained speakers on other varied and vital subjects. Discussions on Russia, Cuba, the 1960 election results, socialism, and communism were the topics of just a few of the meetings. The band also participated in several auditoriums, including the Thanksgiving Program and the annual band con- cert in the spring. Our symphonious orchestra, with its fine record of an “A rating for the past four years, was kept busy throughout this year. These talented musicians, directed by Mr. Hegg, were called upon frequently to supply music for various auditoriums. Each of the fourteen chapters met twice a month to compete against one another for the best chapter of the year. This was done through a point system rated on attendance, service projects, ami joint meetings with Hi-Y groups from various other high schools. The cabinet, with the help of Mrs. Scale, their adviser, planned all-school meetings such as the recognition service, Mock Olympics, the Father-Moth-cr-Daughter Banquet, and the annual Twin Dance. Inspirational Blue Tri-Hi-Y morning worship services were held monthly at St. John's Church. Money was raised by selling clever calendars, listing all the school activities, that were designed by the cabinet. BLUE TRI CABINET Row I: Rotmutten. I rente . WoM, Thompson, Moo. Co-captains Mike Welbaum and John Hendrickson with Coach Hellcckson. Washburn’s 1960 football team opened conference play with an exciting victory over West. The following week the gridders dropped a tough game to the Teddies, 12-6. The offense, consisting mostly of long passes and swift end runs, was greatly hindered by the pouring rain and mud-ridden field. The Orange bounced back with a 28-13 victory over Marshall. Second-half strength and Kinney Johnson's speed helped the Millers defeat Albert Lea in a nonconference game. Adding to the spirit of the homecoming 1960, the Orangemen calmly “Cooled the Polars.” With an attack led by quarterback Len Stream, Washburn showed championship form in overcoming Henry, previously the only undefeated team in the city. The team romjKd over Southwest 61-0 the next week, and finished out the season with an important victory over Central. This successful season must be credited to a team effort and the superb leadership of John Hendrickson and Mike Welbaum, co-captains. The laurels, however, must be given to the coaches. As a result of an uneven game schedule, the Millers were only second in city standings; but it will always be said that Washburn's gridders of 1960 were true “cake-eaters ... champion-beaters.’’ 121 Johnson breaks away by the skin of his . . . ! After a hard-fought loss to South, the Millers traveled to West and downed the Cowboys 14-6. The R-Squad completed its season 2-2-1 by losing to Central 35-13. Washburn's sophomore football team continued a winning tradition by taking city championship. Under Coacli Carlson, the Millers won the District 17 Championship for the third consecutive year. The season started with victories over Southwest and Marshall. Then the icemen ran into difficulty, losing close games to Roosevelt and Henry, and tying North. Washburn finished the season by defeating Vocational, Edison, West, and Central, but lost a hard-fought game to South. In district playoffs the pucksters first downed North and Edison, and then upset a favored South team. Advancing to Region One the Millers edged Richfield, bringing them one game away from the state tournament. However, they were stopped by a rugged South St. Paul team, who eventually finished second in the state. This was a remarkable season for a team which was supposedly rebuilding. The cagers suffered several hard-luck defeats in the following weeks, losing close games to Marshall, North, Henry, Southwest and city champion Roosevelt. In the final game of the regular season, Kinney Johnson and Nate Mitchell led the squad to an upset over highly regarded Edison.
