Mrs. Oppliger learned a new trade (how to put together a yearbook) when taking over for me when I went on my leave of absence. The total cost of producing the CHEQUAMEGON is about $3.500. Individually it costs about $25. Your cost was $10 or $12. The remainder was raised by the annual staff through selling advertising and holding dances. The interest made on the school activity ac- counts helps pay for this also. A special thank you should be given to the students who helped give you this book. The theme of this book, chosen by the annual staff is POPULAR MAGAZINES. Senior artist Lisa Goldman lent her talent in doing the division pages for the CHE- QUAMEGON. The majority of the CHEQUAMEGON was done by the Photo journalism class. Without the help of the annual staff for fundraising and support, this book would not be possible. Listed on the right are the students who worked in various ways to bring this book to you. Enjoy reading! GASPERINI STEPS DOWN Washburn has compiled some impressive statistics over the two decades, consistently finishing at the top of the Indianhead conference. And the main reason for that has been Coach Bob Gasperini. Under Gasperini’s guidance, the Castle Guards have made four trips to the WIAA State Basketball tournament in Madison. They have all collected 15 first-place finishes in the conference, seven regional titles and four sectional crowns. But Gasperini won’t be adding to that streak anymore. After 19 years as head coach at Washburn, he has decided to step down. The Castle Guards have dominated the Indianhead Conference basketball scene with Gasperini at the helm. Gasperini has compiled some very impressive numbers with his overall record at 378-65. Few other coaches can come close to his winning percentage of .840. Looking at other statistics makes Gasperini's feat even more remarkable. Over 19 years he has an average season of about 20-4, but in the last 11 years he is 234-24 about a .907 winning percentage and an average season of 21-2. What Gasperini found a bit more amazing was the Guards' record against conference foes in that stretch. They won 186 and lost but 12, which means they usually went about 17-1 in Indianhead Conference play. I didn't even know it was that impressive until a few years ago. Gasperini said of the Guards' dominance of the Conference. “It blew me away. I guess they’ll be glad to see us go this year. By Us , Gasperini was referring to Washburn's five senior starters. First is Dean Cook. He was first pick for All-Conference, made the first team in the All-Tri-State team, and was fourth team pick in the All-State Team. Cook was the conference’s third-leading scorer with 351 points. He sank 54.3 percent of his shots from the floor (144-265) and 68.3 percent of his free throws (43-63). The senior closed out his career with a 35 point effort against St. Croix Falls. Next is Dan Siroin. Third pick in Conference. He made 282 points. He lead in rebounds with 153 and took third with 98 defensive boards. Jeff Nevela made 2nd team all conference. He shot 56.3 percent from the floor and made 221 points. Other seniors include Gary Bachand, all conference honorable mention, Karl Morrin and Brian Blahnik. The team started with nineteen interested, about ten at the first practice, dropped down to eight, and half way through the season we had two injuries and Juliet went to France. For the first two weeks we were all sick of running two miles. Finally when we got in shape we started to work on our events such as: relays, starting from blocks, shotput. and sprints. Two weeks later, we were all ready for our first track meet indoors in Superior. We were all dead nervous on the way to Superior, but we forgot about it as soon as we got there and did our best. After that meet we all knew what was going on and we practiced every day. Even if we didn’t like it. Mr Murphy and Mrs. Oppliger made us run one mile as warmdown every day. We had some meets at Hurley. Ondossagon. and Ashland. The first places were: Stella in 800 m. Lena in longjump. and Sara in 3200 m. So. as individuals we did pretty good, but we were too few to do good as a team. We are all very glad they had a girls track team this year and we hope there will be one next year and the years to follow. if ©® ifd Lena Lindqvist longjump 14’10”; 100 m 14.02; 200 m 32.14 Sara Ledin 1600 m 6.57 3200 m 14.10 Stella Teshner 800 m 2.45 1600 m 6.08 Vicky Brandt 100 m 16.6; 200 m 33.06; 400 m 1.17 Lynda Kopp Shot put 26; 8” Lori Young Shot put 24’11” ABOVE LEFT: Vicky tried a lot of different events.
