COACH WEILER COMMENTS The 1985 football season was the first year of coaching for coach Kent Weiler and assistant coach Glen Cook Jr. According to Weiler, he learned more this year by coach- ing and being with people than he did in his five years of college. The captains for this team were Brian Marcouiller, David Thoen and David Rapps. Other seniors this year were Doug Brandt, Mitch Fleig, Arty Hyde, Ron Borchers, Tom Lukasiewicz, and Bob Truchon. This was a team that could work together and had the willingness and cooperation to work together. At times there would only be one coach at practice, and these guys were to do their drills on their own. At times, Weiler was a little disappointed with the team because he knew that they had the ability to do better. This took time, however, because the team had to get 62 used to a new coach and the coach had to get used to the team. This season they had strong first halves, however, the second halves were a lot weaker. The last game of the season, Phillips; was the best overall effort of the team. Talk about dedication, one day the four guys that were from Ondossagon couldn't find a ride to Washburn to get to practice. When they decided to run to get to practice, Bubbles the Assistant Coach was on his way home from work, he stopped, and picked them up. The football team voted for three awards. The offensive player award was given to Dean Cook, the defensive player award was given to David Rapps, and the most improved player award was given to Arty Hyde. Coach Weiler hopes that the graduating seniors will con- tinue to work as nard in whatever they decide to do after they graduate. 4. Bayfield who had beaten the Guards by only two points and one point during the seasonal play was stomped by the Guards during Sub- Regional tournaments. The captains of this team were seniors, David Kundinger and David Rapps. Many awards were given this season. All Conference win- ners were Dean Cook and David Rapps. Those receiv- ing Honorable Mention were David Kundinger, Jeff Nevala, and Dan (Buck) Siroin. Dean Cook was named to the All Tri-State Team. David Rapps was selected as Athlete of the Week sponsored by the Duluth News Tribune and Herald. Dean Cook and David Rapps were named to the Holiday Classic Tournament team. The awards of MVP, Mr. Hustle, and Most Improved Player were selected by the team. Those winners are Dean Cook-MVP; Jeff Nevala-Mr. Hustle; and Gary Bachand-Most Improved. The guys on this team played well and worked hard in practice. Gasperini would like to give credit to those seniors who didn't get much playing time. Mark (Peach) Kedrowski, Shawn (Homer) Moore, Arty Hyde and Doug Brandt who were very instruemntal in helping to maintain a positive attitude. This year they tied with Glidden for the Indianhead Conference Title. This was the 6th Conference Title in seven years. They were defeated by Ashland in the Holiday Classic Tournament in over- time.
