Phis movie portrays the life of the student body at Washburn High throughout the school year. We hope we have adequately captured those moments which were precious to you. Sit back, relax, and munch on a bag of popcorn or two. You are in for a real treat. (Incidentally, there are no inter- missions! ) 2 Sneak Preview Mark, Get Set. GO!!! A One-a and a Two-a. Our Ancestors. Punk Rock 4 These soap operas can surely get to a person. “Very interesting but DUMB! M-M-Good No, not the back stroke! “The Party’s Over? “Washburn’s City Roller” 5 I wear Fruit-of-the- “Don’t look at the keys, Yim” “GREED” Loom.” 6 7 Oscar •r ' I A ward The Class of 1978 proudly co-dedicates this annual to Nel- son Gigstad, the guidance counselor and our junior year’s advisor. Mr. Gigstad was born in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, on December 11, 1942, and attended the country grade school and the Algoma High School. He was graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, with a major in English and a minor in speech and from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls where he majored in guidance counseling and later obtained a Master of Science in Education in guidance. Mr. Gigstad taught English for five years in Iowa and has been at Washburn High School for seven years after receiving his Master of Science in Education. He is married and has two children, Erik and Kristin. His principal pastimes are organic gardening, fishing, and cross-coun- try skiing. We would like to sincerely thank him for all his help last year as an advisor and wish him the best. 8 The Class of 1978 proudly co-dedicates this annual to John Albers, who passed away in the summer of 1977. His wife, Jeanne Duquette, who preceded him in death, gave him two sons, John and David. Mr. Albers was born in Antigo, Wiscon- sin, on March 15, 1918. He attended the Grade and Park College in Buffalo, New York, and also studied medicine for three years at Union College in Schnectady, New York. During the depression he moved to Wash- bum and worked for a few years at DuPont as a lab technician until he was called to service in 1942. He served in the Medical Corps for four years. Afterward, Mr. Albers was graduated from Northland College majoring in English and science. He was an honor student throughout his education. His hobbies included photography, fish- ing, hunting, and most outdoor sports. He has contributed a great deal to our school system. He first taught at Washburn High in 1955. A few of the courses he taught were American literature, chemistry, and physics. He also was the forensics coach and school photographer who took most of the pictures that are in previous annuals. The enlarger pictured on this page was bought with money donated by some people in Washburn as a memorial. He was a very fine man who led a fulfilled life. We certainly appreciate his accomplishments. Henry David Thoreau sums it up this way: “If one advances confi- dently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” Oscar Award 9 Stage Hands A movie cast can’t survive unless it has sufficient nutritious food to keep it going strong; therefore, the cooks play a very important role in student life. It is a known fact that healthy bodies are supposed to produce sharp minds. The janitors keep the studio in order by keeping the props neat and clean. Many a scene has been “cut because of faulty props; however, nothing much goes wrong in our studio. Both of the services these people provide are an essential part of the operations in our school. We couldn't do without them. L to R: Mrs. Maunu, head cook; Mrs. Carlson, Mrs. Nelson. L to R: Mr. Carlson, Mrs. Bellile, Mr. Day. 10 The real need and importance of a practi- cal and realistic education is greater today than ever before — basic skills must be mas- tered for survival in our society. When there is the determination for learning, success will follow. 1 strongly recommend the continuation of the learning processes — there is no other way. Herbert A. Jackson Superintendent WASHBURN SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION 12 L to R: Mr. Robert Olson, Director; Mr. Constantine Carlos, Treasurer; Mr. Herbert Jackson, District Adminis- trator; Mrs. Rosemary Bodin, President; Mrs. Dorothy Volak, Clerk. Secretary; Mrs. Eunice Schwenzfeier, Director. 1 am very happy to congratulate you, the class of 1978, on reaching your first milestone on the road to success. I am confident that you will accept the chal- lenge of the future and rise up to obtain your goals. 1 feel certain that the training you received at Washburn High will enable you to face problems and arrive at decisions that will be a credit to you, your parents, and your commu- nity.
