Superman??? Dedicated To . . . Presentation of '76 Chequamegon We the senior class of 1976 proudly dedicate the annual to Mr. James C. Strom, who we feel helped us the most in our past 4 years. He helped us all the way through the first 3 years and came to help us at the beginning of our senior year by taking over as our class advisor. Mr. Strom was bom April 9, 1929 and he graduated from Washburn High School in 1947. He then furthered his educa- tion by attending Northland College and graduating from there in 1953 with a B.S. degree. Mr. Strom received his M. A. Degree from U.M.D. in 1967. He was married in 1958 and has 2 children Dawn and Jim. Mr. Strom has been Prin- cipal at W.H.S. for the past 10 years. James C. Strom Larry Olson Ad. Editor Schlichting Advisor Cathy Kalmon Financial Mang Jewel Picken Copy Editor Tom Maassen Editor People are what make up memories . . . How true. In years to come when you look back at the '76 Chequamegon you are going to see all your classmates and remember all the good times you had with each one. As you see their picture you'll laugh when you remember what you were up to at the time. Of course you'll remember the faculty, your favorite teacher and some of the nicknames you had for them. Again this year a few people put out that extra little bit to make the '76 Chequamegon the best. Our thanks goes out to that crew. A very special thanks to Mr. Schlichting, our advisor, for keep- ing us going when it came close to deadline time. Also Jerry Ruenzel from Modern Portrait and Russ Johnston a private airplane pilot, deserve our greatest thanks. They took a day of their time to go up in the air and take the magnificent picture you see on the opening page. Jerry did a lot of work for us throughout the year and we really appreciate it. The Seniors who took time to design a few covers for us also deserve thanks and especially to Cathy Kalmon whose design was chosen. Nathan Meyer Photographer Sandy Guski Asst. Tom Bodin Senior Prophecies ROBIN ANDERSON is still working hard at Anderson’s IGA , but severe rheumatism has made her slow at the till. SCOTT ARNTSEN is continu- ously bewildered as to why there are no women to fight off, and is frantically sprawling his signature and phone number on every available object. SCOTT BEEKSMA has now replaced Howard Cosell as spons com- mentator (They said they wanted someone very much like Howie). Now we came across BRENDA BODIN who is suffering from severe painters cramp , while in the process of painting signs and banners for the Wash- bum gym. KAREN BODIN upon successfully completing her college studies, took up a job selling banana splits at Renne- bohms in Madison. Tom Bodin was anested for disturbing the peace, while trying to high jump over 200563 Encyclope- dia Brittanicas. He was in the public library at the time, and from what I hear, they really threw the book at him. 29 Senior Directory DOUG CONKLIN - Track 12, FBLA 12. GARY COPPERUD - Cross Country 9, 10. GARY COPPERUD is now in business for himself in Coppe- rud's Bait and Tackle where he sells a complete assortment of minnows and bait. He has no trouble getting the stock for his store, as they say He's got fast hands. DIANE COX is all that appears to be left of The Big T' Insurance Company”. It went out of business several years ago, but Diane unfortunately was never told. BRENDA DASHNER has had a variety of engagement rings adorning her fingers; unfortu- nately, she does not remember just how they got there. BOB DIVINE is still riding around in his Mustang; the chrome is tarnished, and the tires have gone bald, but he says Right now I just can't swing it. WILLIAM DOUCETTE has taken up impersonations, Hey, Come on - Ya gotta work like a buzz saw or Yeah, I’ll pin ya up against the wall. 30 Qenior Directory KIM DURST - Track 10, 11, Prom Court 11. PATTI ESKOLA is now the head of the day care center in big beautiful downtown Wash- bum. But after one day, she decided to retire. BRIAN FLEIG is now a famous painter. He didn’t paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, but found the one in the latrine just as challenging. Low and behold SCOTT FOSS is still looking for the directions to the Stevens Point Cam- pus (I guess he really is as slow as a tur- tle). LUANN GARNICH just opened a little craft shop on main street, where she stocks an abundant supply of little racoonies. TOM GRUPSTRA still has the hole in the bottom of his car: he says it gets bigger and better with each pass- ing year, and that he has the best venti- lation in town. He says it is a conven- ience just in case of a hit and run acci- dent. If he hits them, he takes them with him. STEVE GUSKI has just become a certified biologist: he is now working with a new insect believed to have been extinct for millions of years. The name hhemaxnkiceiner means itchy brother. Their bite is believed to be fatal. JULIE HAUGEN has now joined a new singing group called The Three Stooges which consists of her- self, Debbie Szafarz, and Diane Hop- kins (now the singing nun). Valerie Kozlowski Jim Lemo David Lowe Senior Prophecies DIANE HOPKINS found it very difficult to be with us, for she was just in the process of taking her vows for entering the convent; but says that We will be remembered in her prayers. CATHY KALMON is an RN now and is very busy with her new patient JIM LEINO. It seems that Ham was suffering from severe burns from a curling iron while trying to curl the hairs on his chest. BARB KOZENESKI is still wandering around town wait- ing for something to happen. VALERIE KOZLOWSKI now herds cattle along the shores of Lake Superior; but the herd is being slowly diminished (most of them being caught in nets). DAVE LOWE is found to be working hard and diligently at the Keebler Cookie Plant in Washburn, bak- ing and eating striped cookies. 1 Diane Peterson David Potts Mike Rude Tom Maassen Marti Malinoski Caroline Olson Senior Prophecies MARTI MALINOSKI has now become Dr. Mai-practice at the Bayfield County Memorial Hospital. But. Medic” doesn't like being ordered around. Dr. Mai performed major surgery just last week on TOM MAASSEN. She per- formed surgery the week before, but unknowingly left a towel inside of him. She just realized this after a patient told her that he felt a little rung out. CAROLINE OLSON is working along with Jill Stauffer at the Amber Glow. They now have mastered the art of sliding glasses down the bar, but now and then make a mistake. Once, when Debbie Szafarz came in one fell on her leg and it is still in repair. DIANE PETERSON started a new dance line but it seems the girls were so claudish that they had to call them the Claudettes. TERRY PETERSON finds his work very intri- guing; he just finished his book Every- thing you want to know about Goats but were afraid to ask.” DAVE POTTS is still wondering which color he hasn’t painted his car. One of his odd jobs con- sists of playing taps on the bongo drums for memorial day mourners. MICHAEL RUDE is still trying to locate Track- sters Store . He says he is interested in putting an air conditioning unit in his car (I bet). A new name was necessitated by the burning of the Walker High School last year, and a contest was started to get a new name- It was decided that the name of the paper be “Hi-Times”. Under the supervision of Mrs- Torkelson. “Hi-TimesM spent a very successful year, covering sports events, parties, classes. clubs, music, and personalities. Several well written columns w ere also included. We feel that Mr. LaDue’s Business Four Class did a very fine job of publishing the paper and all consider it a job well done. One Act Plays Over the past three years the One Act.Plays Department has tripled in its membership. The increase is due to the students willingness to participate in the ever important backstage areas as well as on the stage appear- ances. The backstage crew was Glen Tiffany, Mark Hudson, and Melody Hostetler. ALPHA KAPPA by Marjorie Paradis was a satirical turna- bout which realized that youth in its ideals can many times be harboring selfishnesses and unrealism, yet the final out- come of our lives is often more rewarding than any of our dreams. LEADER OF THE PEOPLE by John Steinback was the intense drama based on the memories of an old grandfather and the awesome wonder of his grand- son who longed for his dreams to be as his grandfathers mem- ories. This plot centered around the home life of an early 1900 ranch family. Alpha Kappa: L io R: Cherie Grant, Schmidt. Donna Guski, Stacey Maunu.
