Al- though our beknighted Homecoming float did not make it through the deluge during the Homecoming parade, our anticipation for the rest of the year was not dampened in the least. We enjoyed viewing the traditional events of the school year from our lofty positions as Seniors, and most of our classmates won honors for our class in scholarship, sports, forensics, and music. Each school organization gained momentum in its activities through the efforts of zealous Senior members, and we can modestly say that the class of '68 really made things move this year. The Junior-Senior Banquet proved to be a pleasant interlude, and wamyed by all. Our thanks to the Juniors for their hospitality. The long-anticipated class trip was a memorable vacation for each of the Seniors. All enjoyed the two carefree days in the Twin Cities, where we got an ad- vance dose of pleasant spring weather. The graduation exercises climaxed the four years happily spent in high school, and, in fact, the first growing phase in our lives. With optimism for the future, and confidence in ourselves to shape our destinies, we now leave dear WHS to go our separate ways. On Home- coming day, a bedraggled but spirited parade slushed down main street of Wash- burn. At the parade's end our class float , was awarded first place - mainly because it was the only one that came through the downpour intact. The football victory saved the day and helped to make the dance, un- der the street lights of Victory Lane, with the music by the Soul Seekers, a success. With the coming of spring we presented our banquet for the Seniors and faculty in accordance with the theme, Evening in Venice. Beautiful decorations made our prom, Athenian Interlude, the big event of the year. Now that the year has ended, we all look most eagerly to next fall when we will begin the ordeal of earning our diplomas. A. Meyer, Vice-President, L. Embertson, Secretary, L. McAllan, President, M. Our choice of queen candidate proved a good one, for Chickie Malinoski reigned over the festivities with David Justice as king. On October 27th, the long awaited initiation day came, and the Freshmen were broken in and legally admitted to high school life by the heartless Sophomores. The Thanksgiving dance which we sponsored was the outcome of our very first attempt at decora- ting. Music was by the Soule. The necessity of enlarging our treasury resulted in various projects throughout the year. The selling of booster buttons and Zip Code directories helped somewhat. We are looking forward to our junior year and hope our treasury will be as well prepared for it as we are. CLASS OFFICERS W. Sytsma, V. President, W. Sytsma, Treas- urerg K. Smolen, President, K. The Freshman Class started the year off right with the election of officers. They proved to be pretty efficient executives, so, we accomplished a lot in our first year of high school. As Homecoming time rolled around, our class became involved in several activities. We elected Diane Haugen as our queen candidate, and we worked diligently on our Homecoming float--which despite our valiant efforts only placed second. Initiation was kind of a drag for most of us, but we didn't let on because we knew the Sophomores would be disappointed if we didn't act scared. They had a smash of a record hop afterwards, and we all had a great time. After basketball season, we decided we'd better have a return party before the sophomores had a fit. It turned out pretty well for our first official dance, even if the profit was low. All things considered, it proved to be a very good year for the Class of '71, and we're all looking forward to our reign as Sophomores at W. H. S. CLASS OFFICERS M. Lindsey, President, K. In its fourth year at WHS, the National Honor Society put in a relatively active season. High- lighting the year was the Fourth Annual Induction Ceremony, held on April ll, 1968. As a major de- parture from the induction ceremonies of the past years, we showed pictures in which we had posed beforehand, depicting the bad qualities of inferior students as opposed to the better qualities we seek in a prospective candidate. We were proud to have Mr. Walter Norlin as our guest speaker. Now with our new members safely taken into the fold, we are sure of having an active Honor Society next year to carry forth its respected virtues. :ws 1 Vi' ' ,, I , ... ittt ix, i,,:', l 42 I .,,., 1 R ssii r' y Autistic thinking Acquiring the ability to respond adequately to a situation. . .S.I DUCTEE FIRST ROW, left to right: Mr. Norlin, Induction Ceremony Speakerg R. On the evening of October 21, 1967, the Washburn High players presented three one-act plays: The Valiant, Red and Yellow, and RES to the Sea. The Valiant was selected to represent our school at the Indian Head Contest at Ondossagon, and from there it progressed to the district contest at Mellen, where the play received a B rating. CHEQU MEGON FOREST CHAMPS I96 Under the leadership of first year coach, Denis Black, the Castle Guards continued their domination of the Chequamegon Forest League with a perfect 6-O record. Strong blocking and powerful running paved the way for a state record of 34 straight victories. In conference play, Washburn's stiffest test came at South Shore, where behind the breakaway running of Rick Holman and Bill Lindsey, they hammered out a 46 to 27 victory, in a game played in almost un- bearable heat. The Guards' leading scorer for the season was Bill Lindsey with 89 points, followed by Rick Holman and Jim Cleary, each with 45, and Jim Celmer with 27. ' -'68 VARSITY HIGHLIGHTS I Recovering from a slow start, Washburn came on strong to finish the season with a 9-3 con- ference record, good for second place in the Indianhead Conference. Overall, the Guards tallied 13 wins and 5 losses. Coach Gasperini's cager's bright hopes for the championship crown were ended after two hard fought losses to a tough South Shore team. Several highlights of the season were Washburn's 105-70 victory over Cable and the selection of Jim Cleary to the all- conference team. This year's team was led by co-captains Jim Cleary and Rick Kurschner. And strongly supported by Seniors Kim Lattimer, Jack Olson, Bill Lindsey, and David Dayg by Juniors Jim Branzell, LeRoy Roberts, Bruce Peterson, Ron Jack, Rick l-lolmang and by Freshman Tom Stauf- fer. Much credit goes to Mr. Gasperini without whose brilliant coaching and iron nerves, the team would not have been successful. .IU ICR VARSITY As the season closed, Washburn's Junior Varsity held a successful conference record and gained much valuable experience in preparation for action as the future varsity players.
