7f-fE O-IBOUAM ZON 1967 WASHBURM HI SCHOOL Waskbuttv, U tSCOKStM 2 In just a small way this 1967 edition of the Chequamegon will try to capture and hold the fleeting memories of quiet and studious moments, of football games, pep rallies, one-act plays, Christmas concerts, dances, banquets, and commencements. These precious moments that are so transitory may perhaps require something of permanence in this book. 3 DEDICATION We, the class of 1967, dedicate the 1967 CHEQUAMEGON to MR. PAUL KOPP. Not only has he been one of our advisors on school problems, but he has also been a sincere friend to many of us. His jovial nature and witty personality have greatly con- tributed to making our last year a truly memorable one. Through this dedication we hope to express the gratitude that is felt by each of us toward such a fine individual. 4 TABLE OF OOMENIS YEARBOOK SPOT;.. ADMINISIRATION AND fAOuav.......... Marianne graduated from the Teachers Superior Seminary in Schaff- hausen (Kantonschule Oberseminar Schaffhausen), Switzerland. In the time she was here. Marianne participated in Mrs. Winkel's English Literature class. Miss Benz taught in the elementary schools in Schaffhaussen, Switzerland. She has assisted in schools at Needles. California; Caldwell, Idaho; and Port Angeles. Washing- ton. In 1966 she taught in a summer language program in Springfield. Massa- chusetts. This winter she helped Mr. Benton with the grade and high school German classes at Washburn. AG A TEACHER . . . 14 15 A FOND FAREWELL 1967, our big year, proved to be filled with all the glamour and good times that we expected. To start off with, we welcomed Vicki Lindstrom into our flock. Her addition increased the class membership to 29. Next we made acquaintances with the new teachers, fondly received our text- books, and quietly settled into the familiar school routine again. To help us obtain some financial prestige with our treasury, we scoured WASH- BURN, ASHLAND, and even BAYFIELD selling lightbulbs. As in preceding years we got rid of them without much difficulty. Then came the magazine sales, a moderate success, and last but certainly not least, the Tom Watt kits. Their mysterious contents, which proved to be anything from flashlights to mistletoes captured the imagination of all of our customers and made their sale quite successful. Finally the day dawned when each rosy-cheeked Senior packed his suitcase and made ready for the class trip. Minneapolis, though quite familiar to us all by now, proved to be as fun-filled and memorable as it must have been to all of its previous Senior visitors. We had some difficulty though, after the Ice Follies, in finding one of our members, but he used his head instead of his feet and beat us all back to the hotel. The long awaited day of Commencement finally arrived amid great pomp and ceremony when we were presented with scholarship and honor. Our class motto, Not Up the Ladder, but Still Climbing, truly reflected our present life and our future goals and dreams. , OAQQ 0mCER£ M. Malcheski, President; K. Peterson, Treasurer; S. Through the past year, the Juniors have earned numerous distinctions for themselves, as they have comprised the major portion of the lunch line, the water fountain line, and the detention hall crowd. Not of less importance is the fact that we, as a class have set ourselves apart from the rest of the school by the virtue of earning LAST place honors on our Homecoming float, Wipe ’Em Out.” The members of the class proved to be an inspiration to underclassmen and teachers alike, as they excelled in their studies and in all extra- curricular activities. The Juniors proved to be the backbone of the football, basketball, and baseball teams, of the forensics and dramatics teams, of the musical organizations and the Hi- Times and Annual staffs. The Junior Prom and banquet proved to be the highlights of the year. The upper classmen enjoyed a sumptuous feast prepared under the direction of Miss Jorgenson on Sat. evening. May 6. Under a canopy of orchid and purple, couples danced the night away and enjoyed our prom, Paris by Night, ” on May 20. Now that the year has ended, we look most eagerly to next fall and our reign over the school as Seniors. OFFfCkR£ J. Cleary, Pres.; M. Leino, Treas.; J. Tast, Sec'y B. As energetic Sophomores we worked industriously to make our year a trying, but rewarding one. After many sessions of confusion we finally came up with a prize winning float; our theme was Mellen Juice on the Rocks. To start our year out right, we initiated the frosh. '' Class rings were selected in January. We are proud that many of our classmates partici- pated in extra-curricular activities. We had 5 girls on the cheerleading squad, 10 members in Forensics, and 5 girls are Majorettes. Other activities include music, sports, and various clubs and staffs. This year's money-raising events included numerous record hops, the selling of sweatshirts, and also the suc- cessful Sno Ball Hop. So we end our year, and look forward eagerly to our Junior year. zell, President. M. Lindsey, Treasurer: D. Holman, Vice- President; L. Embertson, Secretary; J. CLASS OFFICERS PRESIDENT: Tony Benedict VICE-PRESIDENT: Wendy Sytsma TREASURER: Karen Smolen SECRETARY: Kristy Amtsen SENIORS OF ’70 The Freshman class slowly but surely made the usual adjustments to high school life. The year began with a class meeting at which class officers were elected. Also elected were Student Council representatives and a Homecoming Queen candidate; our choice being Kristy Arnsten. During the Homecoming season, the Freshmen participated in many of the activities. Their azygous float received third place in the judging. They diligently commenced their studies in science, civics, geography, math, and English. Many activity-minded students participated in forensics, sports, annual staff, Hi-Times, German club, choir, band, one-act plays, pep band, dance band, ski club, and home ec. club. Supposedly, the highlight of the year was initiation, whereby we committed ourselves to Washburn High. P.S. In this summary we won't mention All the kids that got detentions! CHEOUAM SON FOREST CFAMPS Head Coach Mike O'Brien and assistant coach Robert Gasperini take a hard earned rest. The Washburn Castle Guards marched to their fifth consecutive Chequamegon Forest title and ran a four year winning streak to twenty eight games. In conference play the Mellen game proved to be the title game. With perfect offensive execution, the Guards downed a strong Mellen team 27-13. With the conference title tucked away neatly, Washburn's winning streak was tested against Siren and South Shore. Siren fell only after a hard fought battle 13-0, while South Shore came much closer 20-13. With the wind blowing 30 miles an hour, the Guard’s defense held the Cardinals by inches on a crucial fourth down play with only minutes left in the game. Washburn placed four players on the all- conference team: Warren Gall, Steve Terry, Lloyd Swanson, and Bill Lindsey. 61 Bill Lindsey evades two Mellen players for a long gain. Up until the last game, the Indianhead trophy was up for grabs by three schools: Washburn, Drummond, and Mellen. In the last night of the season Washburn squeezed by Mellen, and Ondossagon upset Drummond giving the conference trophy to Washburn. Even during the season Washburn had troubles. In one game the Castle Guards had to come from an eleven point deficit in the first quarter to nudge South Shore in a double over time. Leading the spirited team on to victory were the co-captains, Warren Gall and Jerry Sarver, who were both named to the Indianhead All-Conference team. The co-captains were aided greatly by sen- iors Tim Amrein and Bob Truchon and juniors Bill Lindsey, Jim Cleary, David Day, and Kim Lattimer. Without Mr. Gasperini's brilliant coaching and iron nerves, the team would never have made it to its place on top. JUNIOR VARSITY As the season closed, Washburn’s junior varsity had an overall record of 11-6. In conference play, Washburn climbed to the top with a record of 11-3. Much to the dismay of Coach David Kedrowski, the team produced four overtimes. 65 Washburn Hurley Washburn Drummond Washburn South Shore Washburn Glidden Washburn Iron River Washburn Cable Washburn Minong Washburn Ondossagon Washburn Bayfield Washburn Mellen Washburn 60 Drummond 64 Washburn 67 South Shore 65 Washburn 89 Iron River 52 Washburn 72 Cable 53 Washburn 68 Ondossagon 63 Washburn 84 Bayfield 39 Washburn 71 Mellen 62 67 Sfc TE VU FRONT ROW, left to right: T. Our team honorably represented Washburn High by placing eight out of eighteen teams entered. The volleyball team stubbornly bowed to the perennial power, On- dossagon, and again placed second in both league and tournament play. The lack of pitching experience greatly hampered Washburn's base- ball season. But as tournament time appeared, Washburn played inspired baseball as they batted their way into the semi-district finals. 69 1966-67 CWE£RL£ADfN£ SQUADS M. Maitland, B. Bodin, ]. Arntsen, and D.
