T+jlE ®QU}AM£GON EuM 4 Zip . . . . 4 We, the class of 1966, dedicate the 1966 CHEQUAMEGON to MRS. ILENE ARMSTRONG. Through our high school years, she has been not only a guidance counselor, but also a good friend to many of us. During her brief stay at WHS she organized the National Honor Society chapter and revitalized the Student Council, in addition to building up and dispensing a large file of guidance material. For this, and much more, we salute her. 5 D UfMCTRATfON QupetitdeM letcb's MR. KENTON HOLM, Superintendent 1 am pleased to congratulate the Class of 1966. You have reached your first milestone on the road to success. I hope you will accept the challenge of the future and set your goals a little higher each time one is reached. 1 feel certain that the training you have received at Washburn High School will enable you to face problems and arrive at decisions that will be a credit to you. your parents, and your community. May you forever cherish your happy memo- ries of Washburn High School. Qckoof Bo acL house, Jerry Baker, and Emil Branzell. MR. We worked many long hours to meet the deadlines, and we couldn’t have done it without her discipline, perseverance, and donuts. Thank you, Mrs. Winkel. Mr. John M. Albers has gener- ously devoted many dark hours de- veloping his pictures for our 1966 CHEQUAMEGON. We want him to know how very much his efforts were appreciated and how much he has contributed to our annual. Merrilynne Hanson and Paul Szabo increased the class to thirty-six members. Arlene Guski was nominated as the senior choice for Homecoming Queen. To the delight of all, she won the honor and chose Gene Taylor as her escort. The class was awarded the honorable $1 prize for a third place float entry. Many seniors worked hard to acquire apples for the caramel apple sales at the football games. These were very profitable as were the hot dog, coffee, and candy sales. Parties started popping soon afterward and the seniors were one big happy family. Written invitations were sent to all seniors for a progressive dinner party held on New Year's Eve. It was a blast! A donkey basketball game sponsored on February 5, was a huge success. The $225 profit went toward our class trip. Minneapolis was the destination. The seniors left on April 14 at four in the morn- ing and went on a tour of the Federal Reserve Bank soon after arrival. That evening was spent at the Ice Follies with dinner in the Starlight Room of The Capp-Towers. The second day was most wisely used free time--shopping centers, art museums, etc. We returned late Friday night, weary and worn, but not too tired for action. Many class meetings were held to discuss plans for graduation which was scheduled for June 3. Maryann Welton and Mark Larson were chosen as class favorites. Blue and silver were the class colors. The senior boys came up with many promising ideas for the class motto—promising, but not appropriate. We Will Climb the Stairs of Tomorrow with Ashes of Yesterday”, was finally settled on. The last couple of months were busy for everyone. The seniors realized that high school was soon to be a memory. IB Q d(yi Vmjv: ROBYN ANDERSON SUSAN ANDERSON 19 DARLENE DAY Ok 4 Ftui . . . JcuuO'tS BttSy A successful Homecoming Dance, with music by the Lansirs, was the first school event we spon- sored. Various projects throughout the year, including a dance after a basketball game, selling ice cream bars during a basketball game, and sponsoring the first car wash of the year did much to swell class funds. On May 14, we held the Junior-Senior Banquet, with program and decorations to the theme of Fantasy of Sea. Three Coins in a Fountain was the cen- tral theme of our biggest event of the year, the Junior Prom, which was presented May 21. Our sophomore year seems only a fleeting shadow, but certain events and activities will always have a special place in our memories at WHS. With great enthusiasm and earnest endeavor we overcame the typical sophomore classes: geometry, biology, driver's education, and world history. We won first place on our homecoming float (thanks to the work of Mr. Albers and a few students) in September, and on the fifth of November we thoroughly enjoyed in- itiating the frosh into high school life. In January we selected our class rings. With an eye to our expensive junior and senior years, we put forth just plain hard work into carrying out various money-making projects as a class. We are proud of the high percentage of our class members taking part in most of the extra-curricular activities with desire of maintaining our distinctive excellence in every sport, forensics, annual staff, Hi Times, cheerleading, German Club, W Club, choir, band, one-act plays. National Honor Society, pep band, and dance band. 34 Qckool Rju uuitg! The '66 freshman class slowly but surely gained confidence under the supreme lea- dership of strict but patient teachers and, of course, the illustrious upper classmen. Everyone had fallen well into the daily routine of high school life by the first se- mester's end. Striving to meet the required courses of civics-geography, math, Eng- lish, and science, and actively participating in athletics, music, German Club, cheer- leading, and library, the frosh flourished. The class of '69 is anticipating a good sophomore year with the fringe benefit of initiating the upcoming freshman class. Six con- secutive opponents fell to the Guards as they ran a three-year winning streak to twenty games. There was no one game which stood out as the most important. Instead, three games on successive weeks decided the conference title. DePadua fell to Washburn 33-14, South Shore bowed 33-20, and Mellen went down fighting 27-7. Scott Lindsey led the Castle Guards and the league in scoring with an even one hun- dred points in all the possible ways. Gene Taylor added 50, mostly on runs, and Dan Kainu had 37 in TD passes. All three of these seniors also made the All-Conference team, as did junior guard Steve Terry. 59 Scott puts his foot to a conversion attempt. Day SuiMiuO iy: “A” 7 Uw The 1965-66 basketball season was a very success- ful one at Washburn High, Under the fine direction of Coach Bob Gasperini, the Castle Guards blended offense, defense, and rebounding to post a 13-1 con- ference record and their first Indianhead League title since 1957. Not faring so well against other opposi- tion, Washburn's final season's mark showed sixteen wins and five losses. Seniors Scott Lindsey and Jack Branzell and junior Warren Gall placed the Guard's potent attack; all three were named to the Indianhead All-Conference team. The Big Three received valuable help from Gene Taylor, Jerry Sarver, Bob Truchon, and Jim Cleary. Special mention has to be made of the guidance and inspiration given by second-year coach Bob Gasperini. His seemingly endless energy lit the fire beneath the team. 62 Coach Bob Gasperini- His drive rubs off ChctMpUwS — 1965-66 LEFT TO RIGHT: Manager D. Stone, L. Roberts, J. Branzell, J. Cleary, R.
