WASHBURN, WISCONSIN N FOR£U ORD There are many doorways in our lives. Some we must open ourselves and others are already open to us. Education is an open doorway through which we may pass to the rooms of the future. At Washburn High there are numerous open doorways. May they never close. DEDICATED TO MR. MICHAEL O’BRIEN for his guidance to us, the Senior Class. We also dedicate the 1965 Chequamegon to him for his time unselfishly spent to coach our school sports activities. AND MRS. BARBARA HAYDEN for her many devoted years of service to Wash- bum High School. She has enriched the lives of her students with her knowledge of English and Latin. AD UfMfSTRAn ON SUPERINTENDENTS UESSAGt Congratulations to each member of the Senior Class. It is my hope and expectation that your record of accomplishment and success started here at Washburn High School will continue on into the adult world to which you now turn. It is true, how- ever, that your success will not just continue.” Each one of you will need to make your own suc- cess. The community and the school have prepared you with the necessary raw materials. It will now be up to you to use all of the perseverance, am- bition and intellectual capability that you possess, so that when opportunities arise, as they certainly will, you will be able to seize the opportunity, as your class motto suggests. SUMMARY The Castle Guards moved up a notch in the Indianhead League standings into a third place tie behind unbeaten Ondossagon and Bayfield. The final season's record was twelve victories and eight losses. The Guards started strong, faltered a bit in midseason, and then finished strongly to post an 8-6 conference mark. In tournament play, South Shore and Bayfield fell to Washburn as the Castle Guards took the Sub-Regional. The season highlight came as the Guards edged tall Solon Springs to capture the Regional crown. Playmaker guard Mike Frechette and high-scoring Scott Lindsey led Washburn's balanced attack. They were ably assisted by Gary Leino, Warren Gall, Dave Reiten, and Rick Benedict. Re- turning to Indianhead League action after a year's absence, the Guards fought their way to the championship of the Northern Division. Included in their 6-2 conference mark were wins over Bayfield (20-9 and 19-3), South Shore (12-4 and 5-4), Ondo- ssagon (2-0), and Iron River (6-5). Washburn went down before Mellen 12-2 in the league playoff. In tournament play, the Guards came from behind to edge Ondossagon 5-4 with three runs in the last of the seventh. Washburn then went into battle with Ashland and came out on the short end of a 4-0 score. The final record was seven wins and three losses. The Guard pitching staff was led by a pair of veterans, senior lefthander Harry Olson and junior righthander Scott Lindsey. Olson and Lindsey also paced the offensive attack, with help from Rick Lattimer, Rick Benedict, Mike Frechette, Warren Gall, Gene Taylor, and Dan Kainu.
