TV WASHBURN HIGH SCHOOL Washburn, Wisconsin Foreword Throughout the history of man, books have served as a means of handing down discovered knowledge from generation to generation. Philosophy, mathe- matics, literature - any of these can be found as the subject of any number of books. We appreciate this heritage, and recognize it as the foundation of the future that we will help to build. Table oj Contents 2 Dedication As a sincere token of our appreciation, we the Senior Class dedicate the 1964 CHEQUAMEGON to Mr. Harold Benton whose guidance and leadership have been ours throughout our high school years. 3 STANDING, from left to right: Penny Westerlund. ADMINISTRATION Superintendent's Message JAMES D. PERRY How well can you meet life’s challenges be- yond high school? Life today is extremely complex; it is not neat- ly structured and there is not always a correct answer. Hence, it is important to develop your ability to weigh evidence and to make choices in complicated situations where knowledge is less than complete and ability to see the outcome is far from perfect. 1 challenge each one of you to choose your course wisely, assess each situation, weigh all re- lated evidence, apply your individual knowledge, capabilities, and— SUCCESS SHALL BE YOURS. We soon became accustomed to our routine and after initiation we were more at ease in our new surroundings. We considered ourselves as Sophomores, accustomed veterans, completely familiar with the the procedures of high school. This year we realized just how lowly the Freshmen were and enjoyed initiating them. Our Junior year was very busy. We began by planning Homecoming. Later we sponsored the Holiday Hop. Our Junior year was highlighted by the prom and banquet. Our banquet was decorated to the theme of Candy Land. The prom depicted Moon River with Ken Stephen- son and Paula Newhouse as King and Queen. Looking back over our years at Washburn High, we find our class to be an active group. The Homecoming Queen was from our class all four years. We had car washes, bake sales, and we sold light bulbs to raise money. We participated in clubs, sports, and forensics. We have many things to remember of our High School days and as we approach graduation, we bring four happy years at Washburn High to a close. Now, As we sadly start our journeys far apart, a part of every heart will linger here. 14 15 16 19 20 KATHY AMANN - Bowling 3, 4; Ski Club 2, 3; Annual 3; Banquet 2. 3. 4; Prom 3; Homecoming 2, 3, 4; Librarian 3; G. SUMMARY By compiling a 5 and 0 conference record and gaining undisputed first place, the 1963 Castle Guards continued Washburn's supremacy in the Chequamegon Forest Conference. In its only non-conference game, the Guards thrashed New Auburn and gained revenge for last year's defeat. The highlight of the season came when Washburn and Mellen clashed in an explosive bat- tle; at the time the two teams were tied for first place. The Guards struck fast scoring the first two times that they got the ball. At halftime, the Guards had scored 32 points; it looked like a runaway. In the second half, however, Washburn's offense could do nothing right while Mellen's offense started to click. The Granite Diggers pulled within six points before the Guards' defense roughened. The final score Washburn 32, Mellen 26. The main reason for Washburn's great success this year was the potent offense which aver- aged 42 points per game. Leading scorers were M. Frechette 86. B. Sanger 78. D. Kainu 26, and S. Lindsey 21. 55 WASHBURN 27 NEW AUBURN 14 WASHBURN 63 MINONG 6 S. Lindsey kicks-off S. Summary The Castle Guards slipped a little in the Indian- head Conference standings, but managed to grab a firm hold of fourth place. The Guards ended up with a nine win - nine loss record overall and eight and eight in the conference. Coach O'Brien's chargers started off slowly but came roaring back in the second half of the season to provide a real Conference threat. Alan Nelson, who paced the team with a seven- teen point per game average, was the sparkplug of the team. He was assisted by Ken Stephenson, Jeff Arntsen, Tom Sarver, Mike Frechette, Gary Leino, and Scott Lindsey.
