CHEQUAMEGON Washburn High V Arehburn, Wisconsin —L JJ Table of Contents TITLE PAGE CONTENTS DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ADVERTISEMENTS Foreword The theme of the 1962 Chequamegon deals with candles. We feel that this theme is appropriate in that a candle symbolizes light and knowledge. A can- dle, which changes, can be compared to the changes that our lives go through dur- ing high school. The 1962 yearbook is a new type of publication. It is a summer edition which was completed in June and distributed in August of 1962. A book of this kind covers more activities and events. Late spring functions such as baseball, forensics, and the current ban- quet and prom are recorded. The most important benefit is that all the events of graduation can be included. We hope you are pleased with the 1962 Chequamegon and in future years will gain much enjoy- ment from it. 2 Dedication MRS. THEODORA ANDERSON We, the Senior Class and Annual Staff of Washburn High, in sincere appre- ciation, dedicate the 1962 Chequamegon to our kindergarten teacher. Her love and kindness as our first teacher gave us a good start on the long journey of education. It is, therefore, as an expression of our gratitude that we make this dedication to her. Mrs. Anderson gave us our first glimpses of school life. 3 School Forest The students of Washburn High held a Youth Conservation Day on May 2, 1962. The project for the day was to construct a public wayside on the site of the school forest. The Student Coun- cil was in charge of the operation. Some of the jobs included the building of fireplaces, con- struction of a foot bridge, repairing of fences, and clearing and hauling of brush. The day was a huge success. A great deal of work was completed and it was hoped that many people, es- pecially tourists, would use the wayside. Cutting of firewood for school forest. These fireplaces are guaranteed to smoke. Girls can work, tool 1 Big Four plans strategy. ADMINISTRATION School Board FIRST ROW, left to right: B. Lindsey, L. Sanger, E. Schwenzfeirer. SECOND ROW: P. New- house, J. Perry, E. Ross, E. Branzell. Superintendent’s Message I would like to challenge each and every Senior of the 1962 Graduating Class. When you graduate and accept the responsibilities of citizenship, do not measure your success by what you accomplish, but measure it by what you should accomplish in relation to your abili- ty. When you do this thing, and do it well, then you have reached a measure of success. In addition, make the necessary decisions on the basis of your own good judgement, do not be unduly influenced by others. Possibly this philosophy is best expressed in the words of Jeremy Bentham when he said, HE WHO THINKS, AND THINKS FOR HIMSELF, WILL ALWAYS HAVE A CLAIM TO THANKS: IT IS NO MATTER WHETHER IT BE RIGHT OR WRONG, SO AS IT BE EXPLICIT. IF IT IS RIGHT, IT WILL SERVE AS A GUIDE TO DI- RECT: IF WRONG, AS A BEACON TO WARN. 6 JAMES D. Class History 1962 We began our first year at Washburn High School with thirty-eight pupils. We had our first class elections and met Mr. Haugen and Mr. Stauffer, our class advisors for the next four years. Freshman class activities that we took part in were: initiation and the subsequent Sophomore Return Party, building our float for the Homecoming Parade (taking first place), and decorating the gym for Class Day. Sandy Olson, Mary K. Benedict, and Judy Malinoski represented our class and school as B-Team Cheer- leaders. We began our Sophomore year with thirty-seven classmates. Class activities this year included: initiating the new Freshmen, sponsoring bake sales, building our Home- coming float, and attending the Sophomore Return Party given in our honor. During this year, John Niemisto had the opportunity of participating in the state forensic meet at Madison, Wisconsin. Several members of our class were active in extracurricular activities and school leadership. As Juniors, we had thirty-seven students enrolled in our class. It was to be a very busy year for us. Our first big event was the bonfire and Homecoming Dance, both successful. Next was the Holiday Hop, held during Christmas vacation. After that came the Junior-Senior Banquet. Our speaker was Mr. Gray and our M.C. was George Semb. A few weeks later, Karen Spears and Dave Grant represented our school in the state forensic meet. Our biggest event of the year was the Prom. The King and Queen were Jack Louko and Janet Roberts. The theme was Paradise of the Deep, music having been provided by the Northern Lights. The last event of our Junior year was the Soring Hop held in celebration of summer vacation. We entered our Senior year with thirty-six class members. Planning and building our float was the first event. Then came the Class Play, Call Me Darling, which, after a few months of practice, went off well and was a huge success. Our Senior Class also put on a Donkey Basketball Game to raise money. Next, we attended the Junior-Senior Banquet. John Niemisto and Ed Stephenson represented our class and school at the state forensic meet this year. Several of the boys in our class were mem- bers of the all-conference football team on the first-string. Then we began preparations for the culmination of all our years at Washburn High School - Graduation. Our class motto was, Today we follow; Tomorrow we lead, and our class colors were green and white. We chose Jack Louko and Karen Spears as class favorites. We, as a class, believe that our years at Washburn High School have been both beneficial and enjoyable. 25 Class Play Graduation Activities Class Day Speaker: Dr. Richard Bailey Rev. R. D. Forensics Washburn High experienced a very successful forensics season this year, with 34 stu- dents participating. Twenty were eligible to compete in the league contest which was held in Bayfield. Twelve first ratings were won there. The district meet was held in Hurley. In this contest six students received first rat- ings which was the largest number of ''AV' received by a small school. A trophy for this division was awarded to our school. An award of this kind has never before been won by Washburn and much credit should be given to both the coaches, Mr. Albers and Mrs. Benton and the students participating. In April the six A winners competed in the state contest in Madison. John Niemisto and Ed Stephenson received A ratings in this contest. The 1962 forensic season brought not only awards and a trophy but also served to give students experience in pub- lic speaking. 48 E. Stephenson, Asst. The program was recorded Monday during the noon hour. The program gave the participating students a certain amount of experience in speaking, and gave them an opportunity to hear themselves. Although there was much work in conjunction with it, there was also a small amount of time allotted for fun. 50 FIRST ROW, left to right: Kay Maki, Laura Chamberlin, Nancy Leafblad, Jane Taylor, Paula Newhouse, Sharon LaGrew, Margaret O'Sullivan. Octo et Decern This year, the Latin Class of Washburn High has formed a Latin Club. Its name is Octo et Decern, so named because of the eighteen members in the club. Officers were elected with the results as follows: Jill Branzell, a junior was elected President, Kay Maki, a sophomore, elected Vice-President, and Nancy Leafblad, also a sopho- more was chosen Secretary. It was decided not to have a treasurer as the club charged no dues and had no funds. During the year, the club met on the third Friday in each month. The purpose of the club was to gain a better understanding of the Roman people and the time in which they lived. The members feel that the club has accomplished this purpose, and wish to thank Mrs. Barbara Hayden for her guidance which helped to make the club a suc- cess. 51 Choir FIRST ROW, left to right: C. Summary of Season The Castle Guards lead by four returning lettermen chalked up another successful season in the Chequamegon Forest Conference. Washburn completed the season with a 3 win, 2 tie, 1 loss record. This was good enough for second place behind the first place, Mellen Granite Diggers. The highlight of the season being two 7-7 ties with Minong. Scoring honors for this year go to the following players: quarterback Gary Mager, 39: halfback D. Johnson, 38: halfback Bob Sanger, 18; end Ed Stephenson, 15: end Jeff Arntsen, 6: halfback Mike Frechette, 6; end Pete Rondeau 2; guard Dave Grant 2. Special mention must be given to five seniors who were picked for the all-conference team by the conference coaches. They are Gary Mager, Dick Johnson, Ed Stephenson, Dave Grant, and Pete Rondeau. Coach Nelson and his team should be commended for the hard work they put forth and the fine job they accomplished. 58 SCORES Washburn - - - 7 Minong - - - 7 Washburn 55 Solon Springs - 6 Washburn 32 South Shore - - 0 Washburn - - - 19 Mellen - - - - - - - 12 Washburn — - 7 DePadua - - - • - - - 27 Washburn 7 Minong - - - 7 Washburn - - - 6 Solon Springs - - - - 20 59 ED STEPHENSON End CLAY BEEBE End PETE RONDEAU End GARY MAGER Quarterback ROLLY WOLF Guard DICK JOHNSON Halfback DAVE GRANT Guard 60 FIRST ROW, left to right: Den Kurshner, John Niska, Mike Frechette, Jack Louko, Ken Stephenson, Dick Johnson. Washburn finished the season with an 8-6 conference record, which gave the Guards third place in the Indianhead Conference. The Guards over-all season record, due to only one victory as compared to three defeats in non-conference play, was 9 wins and 9 loses. Special recognition should be given to Gary Mager for his selection to the all-con- ference team. The B team, under assistant coach Norlin Reykdal, compiled a very impressive record of 16 wins and 2 losses.
