CHEQUAMEGON 1955 JOYCE TAST Editor ELIZABETH RODKEWICH Assistant Editor SYLVIA SHERIDAN Business Manager MARGIE THORESON Art Editor DEDICATION We, the Chequamegon Staff of 1955, dedicate this edition of our annual to our parents and friends, the citizens of Washburn, who have provided for us and future students aGymnasium-Auditorium at a great personal sacrifice. SUPERINTENDENT S MESSAGE This has been a great year in the Washburn Schools, not only in the addition of a fine new building, but also in that we have an improved school program. I should like to commend the people of this area for looking toward1 the future and our students for exemplifying that better citizenship. This attitude, work and faith are all revealed in our students. The Chequamegon, because of this, will be the best yet. The Seniors will have a rec- ord of this glorious year and a reminder to do bet- ter each of the following years. Cordially yours, L. C. Our High School career has been a busy one. Four long yean ago we Seniors enter- ed Washburn High School as very green Freshmen, too shy to do much the fint year. As Sophomores, we enjoyed initiating the Freshmen; we also managed candy sales and con- cessions to obtain money for our class. During our Junior Year we purchased our class rings, then sponsored die Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. As Senlon, we have had our pictures taken, planned our class trip, helped to win the Basketball Tournament for the second year, and presented our Senior Class Play, High School Hero. We chose as our class motto, ” First we follow; then we lead. Our class colors are blue and white and die white rose is our flower. Although we lost four games and won but two, many players had outstanding individual records. Among these were Elroy Wicklund's hard line plunging on offense and bone crushing tackle on defense. Bill Benedict's end runs, Pat Sheridan's quarterbacking, Erval Jackson's tack- ling and the holes he opened up in the line, Jim Benedict's fine downfield blocking, the fine all around play of center Ray Holzer, and of ends Tom Williamson and Bob Mick and the efforts of all the rest of the players. It was the running of Elroy Wick- lund and Bill Benedict, that was spectacular. Benedict had runs of 85, 60, 50 and 30 yard drives during the season. Wicklund had runs of 80, 50, 25 and always finished the extra yards we needed. W” CLUB Left to right: Warren Wicklund, Don Belllle, Robert Mick, Ray Holzer, Elroy Wicklund, Ron Carlson. All the committees worked very hard under the supervision of Mr. Stauffer. The decorating committee did a beautiful job of turning the DuPont Gym into a South Sea Island. Our theme was Song of the Islands.” Palm trees, a sea shell repre- senting the throne, and a coconut as a punch stand completed the effect. The coronation of King Donald Bellile and his Queen, Joyce Tast, was followed by the grand march. Music was by Mickey Marshall and his orchestra. BANQUET In honor of the Seniors, the Junior-Senior Banquet was held on April 10, 1954 in the lunchroom of the DuPont School. Mardi Gras was the theme chosen by our class and decorations were designed to resemble the gay festival. Glenn Joanis was our toast- master. After a delicious turkey dinner, a program of songs and speeches was enjoyed by all. A dance at the DuPont Club followed with music by the Blue Rhythm orchestra. HOMECOMING On the 15 and 16 of October the annual Washburn High School Homecoming was celebrated. A pep rally and bonfire were held on Friday night. Speeches were made and the Cheerleaders led the group in cheers and the school song. Saturday afternoon the band led a parade of humorously decorated floats in which the Seniors won first prize, to the football field, where our team won by a score of 20 to 0 over South Shore. Gloria Joanis, Queen, and Erval Jackson, King, reigned over the dance at the Du- Pont Gym Saturday night. CALENDAR September 7 School opens—No comment. 18 First football game. We lost to Hayward. CLASS PHOPHECY. APRIL 20, 1965 We are in the library of the Washburn High School where a group of students is watching TV, which has becoma an essential part of the school curriculum. Channel 7, from our local station,! now on. We are tuned in just in time to hear the Weather Outlook Program with Jovial Jack Granfors announcing. After the weather forecast we hear the following commercials: Do you have acid indigestion? Then use Karker's Little Liver Pills. Come into Cash-Eye Stefinske's Drug and Food Store and get your supply now. These commercials are a nuisance so we change channels, and what do we set? Another commercial: Are you unpleasantly plump? Visit Mary Jo's Reducing Parlors and you'll notice the change in days. If you crave sweet desserts, you can eat Shirley Ann's low-calory cherry pies without gaining an ounce. Hello, folks, this is Happy Hoff, your news announcer, telecasting the local and national news from Miami, Florida. The big news today is about Tom Williamson, a lifeguard at Miami Beach, who saved multi-millionairess Evelyn Ledin from drowning. Miss Shirley Carlson, DuPont’s champion bag-maker at Wilmington, Delaware, burned herself today for the first time in ten years of bag-making. Senator, Elroy Wicklund, Rep., Wisconsin, and John Fortier, Dem., Wisconsin, tangled on the Senate floor today over the controversial matter of the methods Joe McCarthy uses in fighting communism. In Chicago, State Highway Patrolman Tom Hagstrom stopped Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hotrod Benedict and their seven children for speeding on the new super-highway XYZ. which was built by the Bill Johnson Highway Contractors. I'll be back in a moment, with movies ot happenings her and abroad. “If you are in Nashville, Tennessee without room and board, stop in a Margie's Southern Hotel, and that's what you'll get, a room and a board. Now back to Happy Hoff. On your screen now is Miss Lois Peterson, foreign correspondent for the Washington Times, who is about to leave for Europe. Bidding her farewell is her instructor from the University of Wisconsin, Professor Joyce Tast. Here we have a picture of Donna Bodin training in her private swimming pool in Los Angeles for the 1965 Olympics, and this is Pvt. Bill Vienneau in Alaska, training dogs for the Arctic Patrol. You now see Joe Scholl, winner of the 1965 Jetmobile race, and Don Bellile, star player for the Fort Wayne Pistons, receiving special awards. Our last two pictures are of Joan Handberg, who has been promoted to Five-Star General in the WAC and Sylvia Sheridan, famous research chemist with sheridanium, a new element she discovered. Now for a commer- cial. Are you in need of sports equipment or artists' supplies? Then stop in at Peder- mick's Department Store with attached dog kennel. Tired of commercials, we change channels, getting channel 10 from Milwaukee, We have cut in on Specks' Peck O' Talent Show; Miss Barbara Bruneau is just ending her speech: So, my little lambs, you can see why we need a subject like Social Problems. After her speech, we hear a solo on die sousatrumpet by Gary Holman, its inventor, a solo on the organ by Miss Mary Ann Weber, organist for the World Wide Music Hall, a demonstration on how to cook salmon a la king by the great chef, Ray Holzer, a demon- stration on carpentry by the leading carpenter of the Northwestern Lumber Company, Mert Jackson, and a speech on conservation by the chief game warden of Yellowstone National Park, Harlen Westling. Do you need a square meal? Eat at Club Glido and the owner, Gloria Joanis, will serve you the squarest meal you ever ate. The bell is ringing, so we turn off the TV set and say good-by to the students as they leave for their classes. advertisers WASHBURN MOTOR SALES Sales and Service Ford Cars and Trucks Ford Farm Equipment Phone 123 Washburn, Wis.
