During our first two years we think we have come a long way toward becoming a better class. This year as Juniors we have elected as class-officers: Elroy Wicklund, President; Robert Mick, Vice-President; Bill Benedict, Secretary; and John Fortier; Treasurer. Mr. Stauffer and Mr. Ussel are our all-seeing advisors. This voar has been the busiest in our high school career. Members of our class have participated in all school activities and we are proud of the fact that we had a part in winning the basketball tournament. We have purchased our class rings and have chosen Clenn Joanis as toastmaster for the banquet and Donald Bellile as prom king. Pep Band Sporta Summary Beginning rail practice with 10 lettermen, Ted Thomas start- ing eleven were all spirit and fire from the word go , and that attitude continued right up to the last gun. Washburn knew they had potential and succumbed to defeat only once throughout the season. The schedule was enlarged, taking in Minocqua and Lady- smith, both of which were laid low by the powerful Washburn of- fensive. Washburn started off its 5-1-1 season by defeating Hay- ward 20- 1U on Hayward s field in the first of five night gamea A powerful Phillips team brought a halt in our winning streak to the tune of 13-0. It was a hard-fought game but their 200 pound line proved too much for us. Screaming for revenge, the Guards swamped the Minocqua gridders 33-12. The following week saw us across the Bay on DePadua's field for our homecoming game. Three times inside their 10-yard line, we couldn t score and the game ended deadlocked 0-0. Next came two victories over South Shore: first on their field 20-6, the second over in Ashland 15-0. Our final game of the season everyone agreed was our best all-round contest in which we trampled a bigger Ladysmith Team U;-7. All in all, we feel it is a record to be proud of, and we hope the returning lettermen can do as well in the season of 1951; Left to right: Row 1: Richard Welton, Mickey Schindler, Mr. Thomas, John Bednarski, Elroy Wicklund. Under the capable leadership of Chairman Connie Corrier and Toastmaster Frank Holzer, our banquet was a great success. To carry out the theme, Dutch Garden, the menus were written in Dutch script and our decorations consisted of tulips, picket fences, a windmill and a life-size Dutch scene on the north wall. The delicious dinner of fried chicken, served by the band parents, was fol- lowed by speeches given by faculty members and students. Music was rendered by Ruth Palm, who sang Tiotoe through the Tulips, after which a dance was held at the DuPont Club. Prom: Our Prom, the most anticipated event of the year, was held on May 16, 1953 at the DuPont Club with Mr. Stauffer and Miss Haase as advisors, Joan Thore- son as chairman and Connie Corrier as Decoration chairman. Our theme, Old Fashioned Walk, was beautifully portrayed with a bubbling fountain, mellow lights, latticed arches with roses entwined, and palm trees. Our class wa3 the first to change the usual procedure of the Grand March. Diane Grage and Michael Frechette, crownbearers, and attendants preceded King Robert Connors and Queen Bernardino Johnson to the throne. After the crowning by the previous year's royal couple, Roger Niemisto and Carolyn Mattson, a group of five couples sang Let's Take an Old Fashioned Walk after which the colorful Grand March took place. The Music was furnished by the Blue Rhythm Band. Homecoming: To gather a crowd at the oonfire, a small pep band with tremendous noise marched down Main Street leading to the bonfire. There a pep session led by Mickey Schindler and the cheerleaders soon aroused the enthusiasm and loyalty of the crowd for good old Washburn High School. Speeches were then given by students and faculty. After the school song a snake dance led by Mickey Schindler headed for the business district. On Saturday afternoon, October 3, at 1:00 the parade began, consisting of many beautiful floats and of course the usual comedy floats. By the way, the Senior class won both prizes for the floats! That evening, after tying DePadua in a very exciting game, a dance was held in the gym with Queen Annabelle Meaner and King Tony Pikus reigning over the dance. This ended the activities of our Homecoming, and the happy foot- ball followers and the tired players were all very well satisfied. WASHBURN TIMES BAYFIELD COUNTY'S LEADING NEWSPAPER Washburn, Wis.
