FOOTBALL FIRST ROW: Delano Huston, Carl Nelson, Dean Hagen, Bob Carvell. SECOND ROW: David Robinson fco-capt.J, Clink Goehring, Wilbur Allen, Vernon Carlson Qco-captJ, Clinton Hill. THIRD ROW: Arnold Keck, Donald Patterson, Gus Granstrom, Curtis Carlson, Coach Lasham. NOT PICTURED: Butch Kawai-sh. Washburn's Cards started football training soon after the opening of school with fourteen boys out. Of these, nine were Freshmen, three Sophomores, one Junior, and two Seniors and but three were returning lettermen. Because of this lack of experience and weight, Washburn took some hard knocks and when the season was over, we had six straight losses. Another important reason for the Cards many setbacks was the lack of a regular coach for the early training period and the first three games. However, Fritz Jefferis, a '47 graduate, helped out when he could and his help was greatly appreciated. Coach Lasham finished up the season as coach. A complete list, of games played and the scores is as follows: ' We They We They Underwood 0 50 Garrison 0 21 Wilton 0 . 45 Turtle Lake Z8 40 Underwood 6 39 Turtle Lake Z9 36 BASKETBALL FIRST ROW: David Cunningham lco-capt.l, David Robinson, Richard Tewksbury lco- capt.Q, Vernon Carlson, Wilbur Allen. S SECOND ROW: Coach Lasham, Dean Hagen, Clinton Hill, Benny Ness, Clarence Goehring, Carl Nelson. The Washburn basketball team opened their season with five lettermen returning but of these none has been on the regular starting five the previous year. To finish out the first ten, Coach Lasham picked boys from the Sophomore and Freshmen classes and one eighth grader. So with lack of experience an important factor, the Cards nevertheless opened their season with a ZZ-Z0 victory over Underwood. This was a surprising upset to many people. After that the Cards ran hot and cold, depending upon whom they played. They played their best ball against their strongest opposition and their poorest ball against their weaker opponents, beating them by only a few points. In the County Tournament held at Garrison, Washburn emerged Consolation Champion after absorbing a 27-25 defeat at the hands of Wilton and then whipping Coleharbor 42-Z7 and Butte Z7-16. Wilbur Allen was chosen for the All-Tournament Team. In the District Tournament held at Washburn, things were exactly opposite with the -Cardinals winning their first game but dropping the next two. ln the first game they beat Hazen 30-Z4 but were defeated by Elbowoods in the semi-finals and then by Turtle Lake 37-44 which dropped them into fourth place. The Cards ended the season with 13 victories and ll defeats.
