THE SENIOR HISTORY It was a-, bright clear morning in September of '44 when twenty-five little green Fresh- men caml trudging up the hill that led to good old Washburn High. Among these vets of the lower eight who had enough courage to try for four more years of toil were: Lowell Anderson, Lorraine Carlson, Wesley Chesworth, Kenneth Doepke, Lyle Ekstrom, Alvin Goehring, Mabel Hanson, Betty Lechner, Arthur Leidholm, Roy Leidholm, Bernice Massey, Walter Mittlieder. Mildred Persinger, Marguerite Peterson, Lyle Reimers, David Robinson, Blanche Schlafman, Harry Scholl, Ileen Schuler, Dorothy Sheldon, Marvin Slagg. Melvin Strecker, Lucille Wagner, Richard Tewksbury, and Vernon Carlson. During the year, we lost Kenneth, Alvin, Walter, and Lyle E. but we also gained a new member, Grace Hailey. who transferred from Underwood the last six weeks. When school reopened the next fall, Bernice had gone to live in Winlock, Washington, and resumed her schooling there. Roy Leidholm had decided to help at home on the farm. Arthur Leidholm quit shortly after school started and Lowell Anderson had moved to another town. Grace Hailey also quit after finishing her freshman year. But those who were left found that school was not such a bad place and that assembly programs were fun, or were they ? The rest of the year passed and we found ourselves upper class men. But again there was one familiar face missing from our happy group, Mildred Persinger had moved to Mobridge during the summer. We also gained a new classmate, Mary Bob Curenton, from Ozark, Alabama. ' Ah!!! But now came the time that we had all been waiting for since that third week of our Junior year. The time when we put the Freshies through the paces. But I will say we weren't too rough on them because we could remember when we were in the same position. Melvin Strecker left us during the first part of the year because of illness. Soon we were whirling in the madness of preparing for our Junior Class play Miss Jimmy . It was a comedy with the main scenes in the dorm of a girl's school, Breir Mt. College. Members of the cast were: Vernon Carlson, Mabel Hanson, lleen Schuler, Richard Tewksbury, Marguerite Peterson, Dorothy Sheldon, Lucille Wagner, David Robinson, and Blanche Schlafman. The profits from the play went into the production of the banquet and prom. The gym had been divided into two sections and the dance floor was the main tent of the make believe circus we had set up. The clowns that were set all around created the atmosphere and gaiety of a real circus. We pride ourselves in being a perfect class but no doubt the class of '47 will long remember their class night and the feinds of '48 with their paint brushes. And now we are Seniors trudging the same old hill we did four years ago but with a new air of dignity and apprehension. Harry Scholl quit at the beginning of the year and to our midst came David Cunningham, a former student of Marion High. With the beginning of this new year, we also found that we would have new responsi-, bilities. One of the first things that we found we had to do was the reviving of the Cardinal, our school paper. During the time we had charge of it we found time to go to Bismarch to visit the Tribune office. At the beginning of the second semester we turned the paper over to the Juniors and started our work on the annual. Due to the fact that the material for this book had to be sent in to the publishing company the last part of February not all of our senior activities could be published. , ' We did decide that our Skip Day destination is to be the Black I-lills and that the name of our. class play is to be Professor, How Could You? Class averages were added up and it was found that Dorothy Sheldon is Valedictorian and Lucille Wagner is Salutatorian. The three honor students are Richard Tewksbury, David Robinson, and Lorraine Carlson.
