Stor 1972 WASCONIAN In the Spring of 1971 the Wasco Future Farmers attended the Cow Palace in San Francisco. In May they took a group of handicapped children to Disneyland and attended Open House at Cal Poly. Carl Rey and Dan Gallardo were elegates to the FFA State Convention eld in San Luis Obispo. Also at the State Convention Chris Crawford and Dellis Bone received the gold charm of the State Farmer Degree. Also in May the United California Bank sponsored the Kern Section Project Competition. Those in the competition from Wasco were Greg Malofy, Dale Hutchings, Danny Martin, Chris Crawford, Dellis Bone, and Benney Cathey. The Wasco FFA officers composed of president, Chris Crawfordg vice president, Dan Gallardo, secretary, Greg Malo- fyg treasurer, Don Parksg reporter, Helen Reyg sentinel, Jay Dunlap had a three day planning session at Avila in Ju y, 1971. They were accompanied by the FFA advisors, Charles Craig, George Wise, and the new agriculture teacher this year, Gary Cheatwood. Mrs. Wise also accompanied the group. The new FFA program of work started with a woodcutting trip to the Sierras followed by the State Fair where Rueben Perez had the champion Crossbred steer. School opened in September with the FFA busily preparing the winning organi- zational float for the 1971 Wasco Rose Festival. At the 1971 Kern County Fair Chris Crawford won the Round Robin Novice Showmanshi trophy and the Western States Angus Auxiliary trophy. Danny Martin had a champion Hampshire ram, Carl Rey exlfribite the champion Duroc boar and a first place Young Herd. The Chapter had the champion senior division steer, the third place agriculture gar- den scene, and the second place feature booth. At the Great Western Livestock Show in Los Angeles Carl Rey had the champion and reserve champion Duroc gilt and the first place boar, and a reserve champion market hog. While at the Great Western, the Wasco Future Farmers received notice that the Great Western would not be held in 1972. It will be the first time the Wasco FFA has not attend ed the show in Los Angeles in many years. The' freshman Opening and Closin Ceremony team composed of Charles Parker, James Parks, Wayne Ledbetter, Cary Williams, Ricky Taylor, and Bra? Smothers won the Kern Section contest. The senior team composed of Chris Crawford, Dan Gallardo, Greg Malofy, Don Parks, Jay Garrett, and Jay Dunlap won second. Greg Malofy won a first place in the seed section of cotton judging and as a team Greg Malofy, Dan Gallardo, and Jay Dunlap won third in the state. George Wise was the coach. The freshman parliamentary procedure team won first in the Kern Section parli-pro contest and went on to win first in the regional competition. Those responsible for winning this contest were Cary Williams, James Parks, Kin Krause, Charles Parker, Ricky Taylor, Wayne Lecbetter, and Brad Smothers. At the annual Parents and Friends Banquet held March 4, 1972, Chris Crawford received the California Bankers Cer- tificate, Star Chapter Farmer, and his mother, Mrs. Emery Crawford was named FFA Mother of the Year. The Bert Rinn award went to James Burns, and the DeKalb achievement award and the public speaking trophy was awarded to Jay Dun- lap. Dennis Bell received the Kern County Equipment trophy for the outstanding college student. The Kiwanis gilt was awarded to Charles Parker. The Father-Son Combination was Greg Malofy, Jr. and Greg Malofy, Sr. Chapter president plaques were presented to Chris Crawford and Dan Gallardo. The Foundation Award winners were Carl Rey, livestockg Wayne Ledbetter, crops, Ken Small, farm mechanicsg Warren Bone, agji-business, Sharon Mosby, horticulture: James Parks, home improvement, and Jay Dunlap, public speaking. The Bar er Iron Works scholarship went to Ken Small. Honorary member was Ray Rexius. The Junior Citizen was James Eskew, and the Senior Citizen was Loren Voth. Jeanie Parks was honored as FFA Queen. The Most Progress award was presented to Rueben Perez. , This year found a new agriculture instructor in the Ag. Department - Gary Cheatwood - who taught freshman clas- ses and also coached the freshman teams. George Wise was also advisor this year having completed his intern teaching program last year and is now a full time agriculture teacher. A R. O, C. K. program of arm equipment maintenance and servicing was taught at the Wasco High School agriculture farm with Charles Craig, Director of Agriculture teaching the class. Three members of the Wasco FFA were elected to Kern Section FFA offices - Chris Crawford, president, Dan Gal- lardo, treasurer, and Greg Malofy, reporter.
