If success could be determined by improvement, and a favorable season were one in which the players' could be proud, then this squad was successful. Made up of only one letterman and no experienced height, the team performed in such a way as to bring it a sense of pride in a job well done. The highlight of the season was the defeat of Shafter. ln that game, the team effort and selflessness was magnificent. ' . ' -ri ' mfr.. -,ii .. I I I f,Jag4,, I -.E V I, 5 8' fd? And speak- ing of bands, here it comes now.Look at those snappy orange-and-black suited marchers! Listen to that music! Ever heard the like? See that guy over there in the white uniform? Yeah, that's their director. Everyone loves him. You know, it seems like every time these guys go some place they bring back garlands. Take the time they attended the Delano Harvest Festi- val. Did you see it? No? Well you missed a good show by our band! How 'bout the potato bowl and the All-Western Band Review? Their participation is a credit to our school! Remember the Shafter 50th Sentinel parade and our own Vet's Day march? We know who's the best band around! Look close now as it passes. Maybe you can see its leaders. There, that drum majorette, that's C. Settlemire, first semester treasurer. There's R. Penner, vice president, and P. Patrick, secretary. That trumpet player is President R. Mosley, and there's M. Bartel, student council representative. Hear the second semester officers: C. Carey, vice president, N. Douglas, treasurer, R. Mosley, stu- dent council representativeg N. Barker, secretary, and President B. Craig are really carrying on the tradition. This band paid its own way, too! You should'a seen the flying soapsuds at their car wash! But few band members, I might add!! They had lots the cars somehow emerged clean land so did a of other projects, too. Remember that chocolate candy? How could anyone forget? We had choco- late running out of our ears. Participation-wise this band is tops. They played in everything from assemblies to parades like this one. Well, there they go. The award was made by Jim Mack, manager of the Security First National Bank. Jerry Gould won the sectional FFA speaking contest from the eight high schools in Kem County and placed second against the top competition from forty-two high schools which comprise the San Joaquin Valley region. The first semester officers, with Jerry Serieant as president, spent a couple of days at Bass Lake, planning the year's activities and enioying the boating, fishing and swimming. ln proiect competition sponsored by the United California Bank, gold emblem certificates were won by Gary Hill, Ralph Fox and Robert Long, while silver emblems were awarded Jerry Serieant, Nick Bowles and Terrell Newcomb.
