EVELYN POHL Secretory JERRY NAPI ER President HARRY COLE Treasurer ' MONTE BAGGS Vice-President Senior ADVISORS - MR. HUBBS, MISS CLARK, MR. WISE LENORA HOKIT Secretary SHARON WI NGATE Treasurer LeROY WALDRI P Vice-President MONTE BAGGS President Class ln the fall of 1955, one hundred-seventy five students began a new life at Wasco High as eager indivi- duals, full' of vim and vigor. Little did they realize that it would be within the walls of the wonderful insti- tution that the greater part of their lives would be molded. Now, after four years of education, frienships, and activities they bid their Alma Mater farewell and begin paving their paths in the world. The Frosh began their work electing the following officers: Presidents, Melvin Velvick and Teresa lribarreng Vice-Presidents, Earl Hall and Carolyn Cameron: Secretaries, Bette Woolley and Pam Lotta: Treasurers, Merle Hallmark and Gary Robinson. With the guidance of these capable leaders, the freshmen quickly became orientated. As Sophomores, the class no longer had the problem of orientating itself to high school life, yet it had a busy year ahead of it. There were parties to plan, money to earn, and class rings to choose. The big event of the year was the serving of the Junior-Senior Banquet, where the students became Oriental servants. To represent them, the Sophomores chose the following officers: Presidents, Wayne Siemens and Jerry Napier, Vice- Presidents, Stephen Smith and Barbara Menees, Secretaries, Rebecca McMullen and Carolyn Cameron, Treasurers, Robert Woolley and Dorothy Gardner. Then they were suddenly Juniors and proud upperclassmen. As officers they elected: Presidents, Gary Robinson and John Brooks, Vice-Presidents, Jerry McKimmey and Rebecca McMullen, Secretaries, Bette Woolley and Carolyn Cameron, Treasurers, Robert Woolley and Jerry Napier. These officers led their class through a whirl of activities. Under the direction of Mr. Mendenhall, the class presented the dramatic stage play, Best Foot Forward . ln the spring they hosted the Seniors with an elaborate banquet set in an oceanic atmosphere. The traditional Junior Plaque was presented to Michael Roulier and Teresa lribarren. As they entered their final year, the Seniors vowed to make '57-'58 the most successful of their four years at Wasco High, and this they truly did. A ten member cast presented Dear Ruth . Seniors' pictures were taken and exchanged, measurements for caps and gowns were taken, and announcements were ordered. All these helped to remind the Seniors that soon they would be leaving. The annual Senior ditch day, Senior breakfast, and Baccaulaurete made the last month extremely busy, but exciting. Officers of the Senior class were: Presidents, Jerry Napier and Monte Boggs, Vice-Presidents, Monte Boggs and LeRoy Waldripg Secretaries, Evelyn Pohl and Lenora Hokit, Treasurers, Harry Cole and Sharon Wingate. Then on June 4, 1958, one hun- dred and fourteen seniors proudly marched down the aisle with all the pomp of the graduation exercise to bid their Alma Mater and fellow students farewell. Floyd, The l958 football season was a good one for the Cubs. Although their record of wins was not very impressive, they were much improved. As Coach Andy Darby put it, The real record of the season was made by the team's improvement. They weren't much to look at when the season started, but after the last game they were a greatly improved team. Apparently the team had a lot of potential, but they were troubled by an unlucky combination of fate, weather and per- sonal whim, With many of their players returning, the team should have a much better season next year. The purpose of the yelling contest is to create spirit in the pre-game rallies and to determine which class cheered the loudest. The rivalry among the classes encourages the students to yell lcuder. Each class is allowed a certain number of yells. As the students yell, several iudges scrutinize the applause meter and tabulate the results. Each first place is awarded four points, second place three points, third place two points, and last place one point. After each rally, the banner of whichever class won the contest was put up in the cafeteria. At the end of the year the totals were tallied. The class having the highest number cf points is promised a free page in the Wasconian. This year the seniors once again ruled. , ,ii D. Frccman, D. Crawford, J. Taylor, E. This year the horriers took second place in the league meet. The team was strengthened con- siderably by the return of three let- termen, Mike Roulier, Ernie Borjon and Dewayne Freeman, ond eight other boys with experience on last year's team, Richard Aronson, Delbert Crawford, Bill Tracy, Arnold Borion, Charlie Sutton, Peter Slivkotf, Bill Slivkaff and Charlie Fulton. Following in the footsteps of his former teammates, Ernie Barjan was awarded the Most Valuable Runner award. According to Coach Darby, next year's team should be even better than this year's squad, lf all goes well there should be seven returning Iettermen and five other boys with experience on the l958 team. At the some show Bauer had champion pen of five fat steers, all five of which were judged prime, with Tipton Holloway showing reserve champion pen of five. Wesley Selvidge had Future Farmer champion fat hog at the Great Western and it went all the way to the grand championship in what was described as the best hog show at the Great Western in years. Wesley received a gold wrist watch from the Cudahy Packing Company for his accomplishment. The grand champion hog brought two dollars a pound at the auction. At the 1957 State Fair Wasco Future Farmers won first in Farm Mechanics, sweepstakes for the tenth consecutive year. They placed second in beef sweepstakes, third in swine sweepstakes, second in beef grooming and third in appearance of swine exhibits, for the best all around record in years. Miss Kern County, Wasco Union High School's own Evelyn Pchl, visited the Wasco exhibits at the State Fair and complimented the boys on their outstanding exhibits. The animals and part of the boys made the trip to the State Fair and return by Santa Fe Railway. At the Kern County Fair, James Johnson had grand champion barrow and was followed by Wayne Barnes with reserve champion. Paul Evans had champion FFA fat lamb. Wasco won the trophy for the ten best market hogs owned by Future Farmer exhibitors. The chapter exhibited the grand champion carload, in a class cf 19 carloads and won the grand championship for the tenth time in eleven years. The chapter also had champion pen of five fat steers and grand champion Chester White saw in the open division. ln addition to Wasco's grand champicn fat hog the chapter carload of fat steers won the grand championship at the 1957 Great Western in competition against 25 carloads. This was fifth grand champion carload to be shown by Wasco entries in the last eleven years. The competition included carloads from the large schools in Kern County and in addition three colleges had entries. The champion carload dressed out at 66.36W:1. E. B. Manning and Sons purchased the grand champion carload at thirty-two cents and a total of eighty-five fat steers from the chapter. These steers had an average dressing percentage of 65.03, a remarkably high yield. Under the leadership of Paul Evans a group of Wasco Future Farmers appeared before 1500 Los Angeles city school children to display their prize winning animals and to explain how the animals had been obtained, fed, fitted and shown. A letter of Commendation, from the superintendent of the show, on the boys conduct and appearance, was received by Wasco Union High Schools principal, Mr. C. Y. Green, Jr. The winning fat hogs at the State Fair and the Kern County Fair were purchased as feeders from L. A. Grant and Sans and were the result of a three way cross involving the Yorkshire, Chester White and Hampshire breeds. The sire of the winning fat hog at Los Angeles was contributed by Sterling Grant to the Wasco Future Farmers. Mrs. Obie Hankins was chosen FFA Mother of the Year, 1958, on the basis of the record of her son, Mike, who had the most outstanding project program in the chapter. ln addition he served as Vice President and Treasurer, was on the honor roll and com- pleted requirements for State Farmer Degree. Herbert Pritschke, Wasco Postmaster, and graduate of the 1918 class at Wasco High School was saluted as the outstanding senior citizen of the year on the basis of his service to the school and community during the past year. Sterling Grant was elected by the Future Farmers to receive the award as the Junior Citizen for his service to the school and community. Floyd Bauer received the gold key ring of State Farmer at the FFA Banquet. At the 1957 FFA awards banquet, Mrs. J. B. Waldrip was elected as Mother of the Year on the basis of the record on project work and FFA activities of her son, Wayne, past Student Body president. John Peters was named as Senior citizen of 1957, Tilton Tracy and Frank Gafner as Junior citizens for the some year. Wayne Waldrip was awarded the gold key of State Farmer. In league play they had seven wins and three losses. The Cubs were consistently led by their high scoring guard, Howard Thomas, who averaged better than fifteen points a game. Although Thomas was the high point man, the Cubs also had other good players, such as Gaede, Crowder, Parks, Eskew and a freshman, Donald Wright who came alcng fast at the end of the season. The play concerned Ginger, an impulsive, adventurous tomboy, who decided to sign up for the football team after her father had given a speech stating that everyone should be allowed to do what he wants to do. The high school principal and Mr. Carol's boss were enraged by Ginger's unladylike con- duct. Her sisters, Jeanne and Joan, were shocked and embarrassed, vowing not to attend any football games. Then, as a crowning blow, pictures of Ginger in full football attire came out in Life Magazine, jeopardizing her dad's job. When Ginger makes the announcement that she has made the team, Mr. and Mrs. Carol are completely overjoyed and shock others by their response. However, the happiness dissolves into tears when a touchdown is set up for her by the squad. As a result of her escapades, Ginger decides that being a girl is much better than playing football. After Ginger's acquaintance with her boyfriend is renewed, peace reigns over the Carol family as they go to the high school play. Seated: J. Pace, K. Morris, N. Bergen, Y. Bain, L. Powers. This teaching day also helped to stress the motto of the club: To acquaint and stimulate members with such professions as teaching, nursing, psychology, and other related fields of social work Although the role of a teacher was new to the majority of the members, all seemed to agree that they had profited by their experience. Other activities of the year included a tea for the seniors given in their honor by the Delta Kappa Gamma Society in McFarland, a banquet in Arvin, a few receptions for the old and new members, a panel discussion, a cake sale, a snow party at Shirley Meadows with the Camera Club, and, a beach party at Avila. The club's capable advisors were Mrs. Walker, Miss Clark, Mr, Johnston, and Mr. Soindon. fnlrw X .A .fij'3i- T351 win it Psa -L Row l: E. Pohl, T. lribarren, C. Cameron, D. MIKE ROULIER, STEPHEN SMITH, MARILYNNE CLEMENS Every year three junior students are chosen to represent the school at Boys' and Girls' State. These students, two boys and one girl, are picked according to citizenship, scholar- ship, physical fitness, and leadership. In the following summer the three travel to Sacramento where they are participants in a week's activities in governmental practices. The boys as well as the girls are divided into cities and counties where they will remain the entire week. Election procedures are explained in lectures, and then the students put these procedures to work. Each person may be elected to one office - city, county, or state level. The Staters are divided into two political parties which spend the week campaigning far the final state elections. Party platforms, songs, and slogans are all prepared by the Staters. During their stay in Sacramento, the students participate in such activities as trips to the state capitol, election campaigns, candle lighting ceremonies, mayor's visits, talent shows, and picnics. The experience is enjoyed by all attenders, and many new and longlasting friendships are made. When the students return, they report their activities to their sponsors, the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Lions Club, and to the student body. The students who attended the 1957 Boys' and Girls' State sessions were Mike Roulier, Stephen Smith, and Marilynne Clemens. CAROLYN LANE Each year two graduating students - one boy and one girl --- are awarded the Magna Cum Laude. This highest honor, given for outstanding scholarship during the four high school years, was awarded in 1957 to Dan Merz and Carolyn Lane.
