To begin with Kenneth Duncan, Dale Greenlee, and Tommie Brown topped all FFA exhibitors at the 1952 California State Fair with their fat steers. Duncan had champion Shorthorn steer, Greenlee champion Hereford, and Brown champion Angus. Duncan's Shorthorn was made grand champion FFA steer with Greenlee's reserve grand. Their placings and others of the Wasco Chapter brought first prize sweepstakes to Wasco in beef for the fourth straight year and the winnings of Wasco FFAs in farm mechanics brought the fifth consecutive first prize sweepstakes for Wasco. At the Kern County Fair a month later Albert Streiff had grand champion barrow for which J. D. Comp, honorary member of the Wasco Chapter, placed ci successful bid of 52.60 per pound, the highest price paid on the coast this year for a grand champion barrow. Ed. J. Peters, Clarence Annin, Harry Pollock and J. D. Camp purchased a total of ten fat steers and the grand champion barrow at the auction sale in a generous gesture of support for Wasco boys. Wasco FFA farm mechanics exhibits won a total of 39 blue ribbons compared with 6 for Bakersfield, 5 for Arvin, and one each for Shafter and East Bakersfield. Chapter owned stock in the open division won all five firsts in car lot com- petition, with Wasco's light load of Bar 13 Herefords as grand champions and our Angus carload over 1000 lbs. average as reserve grand champion load. Wasco's four pens of five steers won all of the firsts in open division competition with seven individual steers being placed as first prize. I Albert Streff repeated with another grand champion barrow of the show at the Great Western after winning champion FFA and grand champion of the junior division. His fat lamb was made champion FFA lamb, grand champion of the junior division and reserve grand champion of the show. His pen of three lambs were champion pen of the FFA division. He won a gold Watch each on the fat hog and fat lamb, duplicating the feat performed by his brother, Norbert, back in 1947. ln addition the Chapter won the Armour and Company trophy for the most worthy high school exhibit and also the Swift and Company trophy for the best high school exhibit based on prize money won, appearance of the pens, exhibits and boys. Wasco Chapter has won each of these trophies five times. Tommie Brown placed second in the Kern Section FFA public speaking contest, the first FFA from Wasco to compete in this worthwhile contest. His name was the first to be engraved on the Permanent chapter trophy for public speaking. Albert Streiff was toastmaster of the 13th Annual FFA Parents' and Friends' banquet honoring parents and friends of the Wasco FFA. Buck Boggs Jr. and the junior FFA class prepared the barbecue a-la-Castro under the direction of the chapter adviser, Paul D. Spilsbury. Four hundred plates were served at an all student program featured by the award of State Farmer pins to Albert Streiff and Paul Anderson, honorary memberships to Ed. Peters, Clarence Annin, Harry Pollock, Paul Wise and Leigh Barrows. Mrs. Joe Streff was named Mother of the Year and received an orchid corsage from her youngest son, Albert, and an all-wool blanket made from wool from FFA sheep, both gifts of the Future Farmer chapter. Her sons are all State Farmers, all former FFA presidents and one, Norbert, is an American Farmer, highest degree possible in the national FFA. Joe, Skip and Albert are all State Farmers. Their records in livestock shows include nine grand champion borrows, one grand champion steer, seven gold wrist watches, seven Safeway trophies. Boys making outstanding parts on the banquet program included Dwayne Hutson, Tommie Brcwn, Ken Duncan, Vernon Crawford, Ray Wilcox, Larry Mixon Danny Munden, Ronnie Settlemire, Lavern Rolin, Verncn McGuire, Chester Brooks, Grady Thompson, Jr., Charles Aulston, James Hall, Glenn Peters, and Albert Streiff. Charming Rose Miller was elected queen of the 1952 Rodeo and was escorted by Walter Gafner, FFA Chapter President. Other girls in the popularity contest were: Marsola Satterfield, Mary Lou Ragsdale, Freta Miller, Sue Sigler and Sue Fulcher. The rodeo was the largest and most successful since the 1947 show and Was well organized under the direction of Walter Gafner, Chapter President. James Hall, outstanding in farm mechanics has entered his shop projects of an all steel gate for the school farm and cattle squeeze chute in the Lincoln Foundation national welding contest. Vocational day was participated in by all the FFA the feed corrals on the Ag. Farm and repairing Chapter officers are as follows: boys who spent the day painting rodeo equipment.
