Pretty Pat Waugh led the FFA parade before the largest crowd yet to see a Future Farmer parade and presided over a rodeo crowd estimated at nearly 2500 people. Coy Snapp and his barbecue committee served 625 guests delicious Spanish barbecue prepared by Charley Castro, famed Kern County chef. The FFA realized a profit of nearly 5lO00.00. Joe Streiff, Jr. was general chairman. A summer trip which included 3400 miles of scenery in ten western states was enjoyed by a group of 22 FFA boys and their fathers. Four father and son combinations were includ- ed in the party. Highlights of the trip were the national parks of the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, and Yellowstone, the Great Salt Lake, the Grand Coulee Dam, the Columbia River highway, the Redwood forest, San Francisco Bay, Mead Lake, Boulder Dam, and Bear Lake in Idaho. The trip was made in a new Ford truck, purchased by the chapter, which was used in the potato harvest and then sold after the summer trip and the proceeds invested in a new Ford tractor to be used for chapter educational purposes. Wasco Future Farmers won nearly Sl800.00 in prize money at the i946 Kern County Livestock Show with Dale Knopf showing the champion FFA barrow and Norbert Streiff the champion FFA lamb. Bob Gafner won the Safeway trophy for all-around livestock showman. The chapter-owned carload of fat steers from Wasco high school, was made grand champion load of the Show. At the I946 Great Western Livestock Show Norbert Streiff exhibited the champion FFA barrow and pen of three and also the FFA champion fat lamb and pen of' three lambs, and in so doing won two gold watches offered by the Cudahy Packing company. Norbert's winnings, together with those of other Wasco FFA's, enabled the Wasco Chapter to win the coveted Swift and Company Trophy for the high school chapter winning the most prize money, exhibiting the finest personal conduct and presenting the best appearance with their livestock. The chapter also won the Armour and Company' trophy for the most worthy high school FFA chapter exhibit. The highlight of the show was when the carload of fat steers owned and exhibited by the Wasco chapter was made grand champion carload of the entire show the first time a high school had ever accomplished this feat. Nelson Crowe of the Western Livestock Journal wrote that it was the considered opinion of the livestock men around the stock- yards that the Wasco load was the best carload of steers exhibited in the twenty-one-year history of the show. Safeway stores purchased for Los Angeles the steers at the record price of 54 cents per pound. The steers averaged lO53 pounds each. They were selected from the herd of Mrs. Marvis C. Peavy, West Plains, Colorado, by P. D. Spilsbury, and were fed out on the high school farm laboratory by Joe Streiff, Sr. Sebastian Streiff exhibited them to the championship. Prize money won and stock sold at the Great Western brought a total of S29,444.l3 to Wasco exhibitors. Bob Gafner was general chairman of the successful Future Farmer boxing and wrestling tournament which netted the chapter treasury Sl55.00 and as an activity gave a large number of boys an opportunity to participate. The annual FFA assembly before the student body was featured by the singing of Glenn Bergthold, trombone solos by Loran Grant, and a German band under the direction of Sterling Grant, all past members of the Wasco FFA. For excellence in project work and FFA activities, the state association of Future Farmers awarded the gold keys of State Farmers to Joe Streiff, Jr., general chairman of the I946 FFA rodeo and to Bob Anderson, l947, general chairman of the same event. Bob was selected to represent the Wasco chapter at the National Convention of Future Farmers at Kansas City. IRVIN J. BARR GISIVIOIQS DIARY May 24, 1946-This may seem like a late date at which to start our school calendar for the year 1946-47, but it was on this day after school was out, that the janitors found a diary on one of the desks in the study hall. The dairy turned out to be Gismoe's, and here are the dates which we found underlined as the most exciting in the school year. September 9, 1946 Dear Diary: Today was my first day of high school, and it was pretty nice until they discovered I was a freshman. Oh, well, the first day is over, and I am a full pledged member of the initiated fresh- men! September 20, 1946 Dear Diary: It has been a few days since I have had time to confide any of my thoughts in you, but I have been doing quite a bit of prospecting and? l have won out, as Mary Kilroy, a cute little blond, at- tended the intersquad football game with me, and all I have to say for that is OH BOY! September 27, 1946 Dear Diary: Those F. F. A. boys left for the Bakersfield stock show today-lucky guys, no school for a week-but l guess they deserve a break once in a while, as they work the year around with their projects. So, dear diary, I have no kick coming, and, as that is all that I can think of that hap- pened today, l'lI be running along for this time. September 28, 1946 Dear Diary: Gee Whiz, diary, I am surely disgusted today. Our team played Lindsay in football there, and I was unable to go. The score was Lindsay 14-7 Wasco 7. l'll bet it was a good game. I have some English from Miss Main to do, dear diary, so I shall say so long for tonight. October 4, 1946 Dear Diary: Golly, did I look silly today! I had to wear one of those old Latin club dresses, or whatever they call them. I was auctioned aff, and Mr. Smith bought me for 53.50. Now I am puzzled whether it was my brains, personality, or just my good looks that sold me. What do you think? October ll, 1946 Dear Diary: I am staying home and doing my Latin for Miss Ruud tonight, as Mary Kilroy, my girl, had to attend the G. A. A. slumber party, so that leaves me with nothing to do except doing my school work, which isn't very exciting. October 12, 1946 Dear Diary: I just came home from the Wasco-McFarland football game, and the score was Wasco 39- Mclfarlcind 6. I had to take Mary home, and it made me pretty late getting home myself, so I shall just have to say good night for tonight. October 15, 1946 Dear Diary: We got out of school at 2:30 today as there was a P.-T. A. meeting, and even if it was just an hour shorter, I can assure you that it made everyone very happy. ' October 18, 1946 Dear Diary: I took my girl to the dance given by the S. R. C, tonight after the Edison High fooball game, and it surely was a good dance. Mary enjoyed it too. GISMOES DIARY IContinuecIl Octcber 24, 1946 Dear Diary: We received our report cards today and, as yet, I haven't given mine to my parents, but I guess there is no way out, so wish me luck! October 25, 1946 Dear Diary: Our mighty football team played East Bakers- field tcnight and I lust yelled and yelled. My throat is so sore that I just can't stand to talk. I guess I had better get to bed now, as it is pretty late, November 1, 1946 Dear Diary: I am just getting ready to see my girl. Our football team is playing at Selma today, but you know hcw this transportation situation is, so I couldn't go, but I am sure it will be a good game. November 8, 1946 Dear Diary: The Delano football team played here tonight, and they beat, but you know the old saying, Wasco can't win all the time, just most of the time. November 9, 1946 Dear Diary: I got up early to watch the C. S. F. members take aff for Lindsay. I have made up my mind to stay home nights and study. I mean Pop and Mon made up my mind! November 15, 1946 Dear Diary: We played Taft in football here tonight, and they beat us, but it was a good game anyway. November 21, 1946 Dear Diary: ' We really had a swell Bonfire Rally tonight. Everything was just perfect, although our snake dance was interrupted a few times. November 22, 1946 Dear Diary: The great night finally came. We played Shafter and the result-well, the result was a victory for Shafter, but it was a good game any- way. , November 28, 1946 Dear Diary: I-IDORAYI Two whole days of vacation for Thanksgiving, and I am going to forget all about school for those two days. lsn't it wonderful? December 5, 1946 Dear Diary: I am writing this entry while standing up be- cause of parental influence. Report cards were given out today. I can't understand why I don't get better grades. It seems as if all I do is study, study, study! Well, back to the books! That's all for tonight. December 6, 1946 Dear Diary: I just had to take time off from the home- work to watch our basketball team play McFar- land, Gosh! Our first game of the season and we lost! Wasco 22, McFarland 27. But l'm all out for our team. Yea orange! Yea black! December 13, 1946 Dear Diary: The class of 47 presented A Date With Judy as their class play. It was worth seeing! They say the seniors had a bigger crowd than anyone has ever had for a class play. That class of 47 is really on the ball! But just give me time- December 14, 1946 Dear Diary: The First Kern County Basketball Carnival was held at Wasco tonight. GISMOES DIARY iconfanuedi December l4, l947 Teams from East Bakersfield, West Bakersfield Shatter, Taft, and our own team competed for two trophies. East Bakersfield won a trophy for the best offensive game played, and our own Tigers walk- ed off with the trophy for the best defensive team of the evening. The Tigers' stock has gone up to about the top of the market, but they are always tops with me. l'm off to congratulate the team- December l 8, l 946 Dear Diary: Tcday was my good day. The C. S. F. stud- ents surely make wonderful teachers. They were easy on us. lt would have been more fun if the teachers hadn't been in the room, but that didn't stop me from winking at the teacher! ln fact l was so inspired that l am going to study-I December 20, l946 Dear Diary: Merry Christmas! School is out for Christmas vacation-nothing to look forward to except San- ta Claus for a week and a half. We do have one day at school before New Year's Day--but l'll add Happy New Year to my Christmas greet- ing. Until l947, the endl January 3, l 947 Dear Diary: , This is my first entry of the new year. For days l've been signing petitions for student body nominees and today the nominees gave campaign speeches in assembly. lt's hard to decide how to vote. l'm surely glad l got a student body card so that I can vote for all of the officers instead of just the song leaders and the cheer leaders. Back to the books- January lO, I947 J Dear Diary: Taft came over to play our boys in basket- ball tonight. we lost-Wasco 20, Taft 2l . . . and l've nothing more to soy. And so to bed. January l7, 1947 Dear Diary: Today was the last day of the first semester. l should feel gay because half of the school year is over, but East Bakersfield played basketball against our team tonight-Wasco 26, E. B. 31- Ot, well! l'm still rooting for you, Tigers. Better luck next time. , January 22, l 947 Dear Diary: Our new student body officers were installed today. I guess we are pretty lucky to have such good officers for both semesters. Of course, l'll have to admit that not all of the candidates l voted for won, but l'm behind our new officers lOO per cent. I still think we have the best school in the country-campus, students, and even faculty. So much for now. I have to soften up my parents-report cards tomorrow. January 23, i947 Dear Diary: l'm afraid that the softening-up job I did yesterday didn't do much good. But l again resolve to do better the next six weeks. Well, back to the books. GISMOIQS DIARY iconiinuedi January 24, 1947 Dear Diary: We played West Bakersfield here tonight- oh, well, the juniors gave a novel dance after the game. The music was accompanied by mov- nig pictures. The great big song came nearer and naerer and-Open the door, Richard! January 28, 1947 Dear Diary: The F. F. A. gave an assembly today, and Bob Anderson was presented with' a gold key for State Farmers. Bob has been very active in the F. F. A., and we are all proud of him. And I'm just a freshman with a yen for the soil-and the easy life of a farmer. Believe me, fellows, I'm only fooling! January 31, 1947 Dear Diary: My sis just came home from the senior party that Warf's ticket team gave to Derril's team. From the way she talks, it must have been some party-Bum's Bazaar, they called it. And the Hobo Chef was Mr. George. Can he cook, too? February 1, 1947 Dear Diary: I went to McFarland tonight to see our boys win a game-and they did! We even had a band there-and did their music l?J pep it up! They were strictly on their own, too. More fun! Rah! Rah! Rah! February - 7, 1947 Dear Diary: We played Taft tonight. Guess what? That's right. The some old line-but I have hopes yet. And now to bed to sleep off the defeat. February 8, 1947 Dear Diary: I had a most wonderful time tonight. I took Mary land did she look nice! to the Home Economics Club Valentine dance. The dance was formal, and the gym looked like a fairy land. They even had an orchestra. Ah! hearts and flowers!-and Mary Kilrayl February 14, 1947 Dear Diary: We had a most exciting time tonight. Our B team beat the E. B. Daggers-and they almost beat them in more ways than one! What fun! Yea, team, fight! February 15, 1947 Dear Diary: Sis went to the G. A. A. Recreation Riot this afternoon. She must have had a good time. Anyway, she's tired but happy. P. S. I had to rake the leaves from Mr. Wise's lawn. What a life! V February 21, 1947 Dear Diary: Our team played West Bakersfield tonight at Bakersfield. I couldn't go, but I hear that the C's had a pretty good time. Only one more game of the season-and I'm worried, but still faithful to the Orange and Black. February 28, 1947 Dear Diary: We played Shatter tonight. My school spirit came to the top and even bubbled over! We won all three games - and we were rooting and tooting! lt's great to be alive tonight. We had the best rooting section we have ever had- so far this year. But l won't stop rooting for our school ever!!! March 7, 1947 Dear Diary: The Juniors gave an exceptionally fine ploy, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. It made even me feel young. - March 14, 1947 Dear Diary: . I'm laughing so hard that I can hardly write this! The W Club initiated their new members today. The new members had to dress like girls lat least, I think that is what they were supposed to look likell and did they look silly! One even had a bare mid-riff! The girIs are being formally l?I initiated otnight. I wonder if it is worth it-but I guess those W's are worth almost anything. Maybe next year l can get one. Of course, that means that I will have to keep my grades up. Back to the books! GISIVICDIES DIARY iconiinuedi March I9, I9-47 Dear Diary: The CSF members ismart guysl taught again. My teacher was a slick chick! I tried to date her, but no luck! April l9, 1947 Dear Diary: The days are certainly full of going on. The baseball team and the tennis team went to Maricopa today, and the track team went to West Bakersfield for the Kern County Relays. I stayed home and washed the windows for mom. April 26, I947 Dear Diary: East Bakersfield brought their baseball team and their tennis team here today. Gosh! I think I like baseball almost as well as I like football and basketball. And those tennis games are tastl May 2, I947 Dear Diary: ' Our baseball and tennis teams were hosts to Shafter today. I certainly like to watch those games. Those were the most exciting moments of the dayl May 3, I947 Dear Diary: They held the county track meet at Taft today. It's iust my luck that I couIdn't go. have a job on Saturday afternoons now. I made 52.50 today. May io, I947 Dear Diary: Worked again this afternoon and missed the baseball game with West Bakersfield at Bakers- field and Valley Track meet at Delano. May I7, I947 Dear Diary: I missed the West Coast Relays and the ball game with West Bakersfield. I surely hated to miss these, but that money comes in handy. How- ever, that night I hung around the grammar school cafeteria though to watch the Senior and Junior girls in their pretty party dresses at the Junior-Senior banquet. The boys didn't look so bad either. For once, their faces were clean and their hair combed. My mouth watered when I saw all the good food. Yum! Yum! May l8, I947 Dear Diary: At Baccalaureate tonight, I thought of three years from now. I can hardly wait. I May 23, i947 Dear Diary: My sister graduated tonight. Yep! She finally made it! The graduation ceremony was really impressive. And the P. T. A. gave a reception in the gym after the exercises. School is over at last! I'm no longer a freshman! Of course, we don't get our report cards for a few weeks, but I'm sure that I passed. l'M GISMOE! Administration Building ifiifffff' i .
