THE WASCONIAN :: 1942 lBGYS' CLUB - The membership ot the boys' W Club is made up ot A class athletes who have made the varsity squad in tootball, basketball, track, or tennis. ln addition to the awarding ot letters, Ed Carriker was given the All American blanket in tootball, Ray Packard was chosen as honorary captain ot the football team, and Loy Dale Wright was given a trophy tor outstanding performance tor his IO?-yard-two-toot run in the game with the Driller Reserves. Bill Baker was also chosen as the outstanding player in A basketball. Besides this, the club awarded three belt buckles to the high point men ot A , B , and Q classes in the inter- class track meet. At the end ot the football season, the tootball letter men were the guests ot the Exchange Club at Weit's l lotel, where they were served a chicken dinner. During the year. the letter club bought a S25 defense bond, the tirst club in the school to do so, and donated S5 to the Red Cross. One outstanding rule in the cross country race is that the first freshman who finishes receives a numeral. The Numeral Club awarded medals this year to competitors in the A , B , and C classes whose performance in athletics was deemed the most out- standing. The club was very active this year, purchasing a S25 defense bond, donating S5 to the Red Cross, and making up a personal kit 'lor American soldiers in Alaska. The Wasco Chapter, Future Farmers ot America, enioyed the most successful season ot its eleven-year existence during the school year, l94l-l942. Two hundred and seventy ribbons, including 7I trom the State Fair, I45 trom the Kern County Livestock Show, and 65 trorn the Great Western Livestock show at Los Angeles, representing cash prizes total- ling 262.250, were won by Wasco entries. Elmer Witzke, with his tat borrows, was high point winner at the State Fair, missing out on the Future Farmer champion barrow and pen by a close decision. Johl 'Bergthold and the Wasco Chapter exhibited the grand Champion'ffl3u,roc Jersey sow and boar respectively, while Duane Spils- bury showed the iGrand champion barrow ot the show, which sold tor the record price bf 87lf2 cents per pound. Regina Streitt showed the champion Shorthorn steer in the 4l-l division. Jim Gloeckler and Jim Pellett sold their prize steers tor 2llf2 cents per pound. At the Great Western, Sebastian Streitt, one ot Wasco's most successful livestock teeders, exhibited a pen ot Duroc borrows which were made successively, Future Farmer champion individual and pen, iunior division grand champion individual and pen, and grand champion individual and pen ot the entire show. The winninc' brought Sebastian a gold wrist watch tram Cudahy Packing Company a gold plated medal trom the Duroc Record Association, and a check tram the same association tor 3385. The champion sold tor 48 cen per pound. Other activities included a successtul F. F. A. boxing and wiestlirla event chairmaned by Joe lvliller, the Chapter Christmas party, a Parent and Sons' banquet under the direction ot Orval Lowrimore, with Joe Miller as toastmaster, and the largest parade, barbecue, and rodeo in Wasco's history, under the leadership at Orval Lowrimore. Mary Ann Edwards won a nip and tuck contest tram Norma Lohr tor the title ot Wasco's most popular girl and led the parade with the crack lvlinter Field military band as honor guard. The F. F. A. president escorted the Queen and assisted in the tlag raising ceremony at the rodeo with the Minter Field band playing To the Colors. An invocation honor ing the Wasco boys in the armed services ot their country was ottered by Rev. Neal C. Dirkse. This was tollowed by a tine rendition at the Star Spangled Banner. The parade was the largest in Was os history and was made up almost entirely ot local entries. Daredevil Tilton Tracy, tormer F. F. A. president and leader, thrilled the crowd with an exhibition ot riding a wild Brahma steer backwards Buck Sprague, tormer Wasco F. F. A., won the bareback bronc riding while Everett l-lake topped Frank Gatner and Tilton Tracy in the Brahma steer riding. John Camp was tirst in the F. F. A. steer riding In response to the request ot the U. S. govern- ment tor increased production ot pork, beet, dairy, poultry and garden products, Wasco F. F. A. boys I have shipped in three carloads ot corn and wheat Y this year, and purchased locally. over Aa hun- dred tons ot grain to teed out 90,000 pounds out beet, 40,000 pounds ot pork, 6,000 tryers and double the number ot dairy products ot l94l. The ration tor Uncle Sam's tighting men is high in pro- tein, and the government request attorded Wasco F. F. A. boys an opportunity to do their bit toward the national goal ot victory. Every member planted and cared tor a Victory garden on the Ag Farm laboratory and many planted Victory gardens at home. Pictures ot the school tarm gardens were taken by representatives ot the California State Bureau ot Agricultural Edu- cation tor a slide series. Loans totalling over Sl0,000 have been negoti- ated with the Wasco Branch, Bank ot America, to carry on F. F. A. livestock proiects. Much ot this has been repaid and an excellent credit rating established tor those completing repayment. New loans are being made as needed under the super- vision ot the Chapter adviser, P. D.
