The public spealring classes have talren part in several ora- torical contests. In class. they strived tor improvement in their voices. pronunciation, and speech. At several assemblies. members ot this class gave interesting an- nouncements, slrits. and readings. The art classes have made post- ers Ior all ot the school plays, parties, and other campus activi- ties. Many ot the students have been worlring in clay, metal, and leather. The members ot the sewing MARKING A HEM , Y l classes have spent an hour each day, worlcing on their garments. They tools two trips to Balcerstield, where they purchased the mater- ials lor their worls. The band and its maiorettes, Barbara Bova, Gerry Parts, and Maxine Goertz, were praised 'lor their appearance at the Frontiers Day Parade. Eight students play- ed in the all-valley clinic band in Fresno. The Future Farmers sponsored a rodeo and barbecue, a boxing and wrestling tournament, a trip to Bass Late, a Christmas party, PHYSICS LABORATORY ' H -Wf- THE WASCONIAN :I T941 WOOD SHOP a bean teed, and other social parties. The girls' gym classes pertorm- ed belore the assembly some ot the dances they had learned in class. The senior girls became baslcetball champions in the night basletball games. The commercial students tools a trip to Balcerstield, where they visited the court house and iail. Several at the typists received pins tor being able to type litty words a minute with a minimum ot live errors. ln the English classes, the stu- dents had Theme Clubs in which they read their themes every weels. The SPANISH CLUB, with hdet Urzancyni as president and Andrew Grtiz as vice president, gathered in many Span- ish speaking students Besides the regular Spanish ctasses. An initiation, which was great tan, was staged in the science dining raarn. The activities have dittered tram those ot past years. The club met on the tirst Tuesday ot the month, at which time. various phases ot photog- raphy and photographic principles were discussed. The club sponsored two dances as a means at raising money tor activities later in the year. The Christmas Dance has hecome a club tradition. Taft was favored to win by four touchdowns. but only by heavy substitutions could they match the Tiger's teamwork. Numerous fumbles saw the Mc- Farland game end 6 to 6 with Wasca mak- ing tremendous yardage only to fumble. in two games with Taft Varsity Reserves. our gang won I9 to O and 32 to 0. Lone Pine. who later won seven consecutive games. dropped a 20 to O game to our club. ln the annual game with the Bakersfield Driller Re- serves. the Tigers won 20 to 7. Scoring two touchdowns in the final four minutes. the Tigers defeated East Bakersfield I8 to I4 in a big upset. ln the final game with Shaf- ter, our Tigers ran up their eighth consecu- tive win to the tune of 20 to O. By the previous year's graduation, all but three ot the iirst twenty on the school tennis ladder were lost to this year's squad. Various matches were held throughout the year when not coiled all hy our unusual weather. The linal result showed the Tiger slightly above the live hundred per cent marlr in wins and losses. The Orange and Blacli team consisted oi the iollowing racqueteers: Bud Banner, Richard Bennett. Duane Spilshury. Don Cameron, Jim Brier, Ben l-ladloclr, Alex Buechler, Curt Robinson. and Ray Crawtord. Vernon Lawson tinished six inches behind and was closely tollowed by Elwood Knox, third, and Alex Dobrennen, tourth. Among the earlier Tinishers were Willis Reimer, fifth, Sebas- tian Streitt, sixth, and Joe Torrez, seventh. The GULF team this year had several matches with Tait, East Balcerstield, and other schools. The highlight ot the season were a victory over Tatt on their own course and the school championship match won by Richard Bennett. Brier and Bennett were awarded golt numerals. The story tool place on an island, where robots ol superhuman mental and physical ability were made by Rossum's Universal Robots, Inc. lrouble began when Helena Glory visited the island, and captured the heart at the General Manager, Harry Domin. She persuaded the otticials to try to humanize the robots by giving them souls, but instead the robots became violently rebellious and lilled all ol humanity, except one man who was a builder, lile themselves. The builder found two humanized robots who had a strealc at Adam and Eve in them, and so humanity wasonce more revived.
