We wish to express our appreciation for his kind attention and friendly advice. Pzzrting always brings regret When happy days zue've spent, Hut 17?L'77701'l.L'J will nc'cr forget, What Wemuood High has meant ooooooooooc foreword To keep in the minds of the graduates of today and tomorrow, the good times, the helpful and useful store of knowledge that they received from YVarwood High School, is the purpose of this book. We hope heartily that we will accomplish our aim and that it will prove a help and a remembrance of our school days that we all will cherish. We trust that this book will remind the students of the high ideals and standards of our school and help them to cherish these same ideals and teachings. 6 :poo THE HORACE MANN CENTENNIAL One hundred years ago Horace Mann crusaded for better school buildings, properly trained teachers, normal schools in which these teachers might be trained, good school libraries, adequate textbooks, in- struction free from the cramping effects of sectarianism, and teaching methods based on the children's own nature and interests. He believed in equality of the sexes educationally, equal opportunity educationally for all races, an elective system of studies, the granting to the students a fuller measure of responsibility for their conduct, emphasized and encouraged physical health through exercise and the study of hygiene. He denounced the spirit of competition as an incentive to study and insisted upon an irreproachable moral life as a requirement for graduation. This father of our modern education system warned that without the development of character, the sharpening of the in- tellectual powers of the individual might be more a curse than a blessing to society. Today we see a great educational system developed, free to all, with wide opportunities for the development of the mind and character. Let us as citizens of a fine and enlightened community renew our faith in the educational principles promoted by Horace Mann and redouble our efforts to make education the concern not only of the mind but of the whole individual. 7 BOARD OF EDUCATICDN CHARLES H.
