SENIDRS The building ofthe Suspension Bridge, begun in 1847, was an out- standing enterprise, not only be- cause it was the first bridge to be constructed over the Ohio below the forks at Pittsburgh, but also be- cause it was at the time the longest single span in America. The bridge, which it took two years to complete, was an important face tor in the growth of Wheelilig, serving as a link between the East and the West and giving rise to the development of Wlieeliiug Island.
