He has shown untiring effort in satisfying our wants, and has worked with us to make every senior activity the best imaginable. For reasons too numerous to outline here, I am particularly proud of the senior class. The fact that you have had to forego some of the more normal attributes of a high school and that you have had to gear yourselves to the demands of emergency operation has not gone unrecognized. You have applied yourselves diligently, you have helped in consid- able measure to build a spirit of devotion, respect, co-operation, and leadership to be emulated by under-graduates in the years to come. In your studies and in your extra-curricular activities you have been exemplary. It is a pleasure on the part of the administration and the faculty to recognize your achievements. We are proud of the tireless effort and the excellent work that have gone into the school paper, the yearbook, the musical review, the senior play, and the fine sportsmanship you have exercised in athletic functions, and the spirit of loyalty to your school, to your teachers, and to your fellow classmates. To the Graduating Class of 1956, I say THANK YOU. Wherever duty calls you, the good will of your Alma Mater will always attend you. HAROLD F. GRYPHON AWARD Since this is the first yearbook to be published by Warwick Veterans Memorial High School, it was necessary for us to give our yearbook an enduring title. A contest was sponsored by the staff to gather the ideas of the student body. A member of the senior class, David Straight, entered THE GRY- PHON and this title was unanimously chosen by the staff. Since this is to be a lasting title and is so symbolic, as is stated in the Foreword, we believe that David deserves special recognition. D. A. R. AWARD Portia Smith has received the highest honor awarded to a senior girl. The characteristics which are required include scholarship, character, and class leadership. Portia has justly earned this recognition and has achieved popularity both among the students and the faculty by her participation in Good Will, Chorus, The Hurricane Herald, and Student Council. We are especially pleased with her achievement, as Portia is the co-editor of the Gryphon and is a member of the Rhode Island Honor Society. SENIOR CLASS With the untiring efforts of their advisor, Mr. Thomas Lavery, the senior class has sponsored many successful events. At Aldrich. the first was the Get-Together Party and Dance held on Monday, October 10, The second, an edort to raise money for the class, was the paper-drive held the first Sunday in November. The popular Sadie Hawkins Dance came November 28. with the girls' bringing their beaus to the event. The verv successful Christmas Hop was the last of the events held in I955 by the seniors. Saturday, February 4, saw the Square Dance held in the cafeteria. The class of l956 has been very active and successful in its efforts to make itself one to be remem- bered. Miss Alice Hurl. has accomplished what no other War- wick school has had to accomplish. Extremely late in beginning work, behind in ads, and a larger yearbook to produce than ever before are factors which did not even phase the indus- trious staff as it ambitiously began to piece together these pages, All of these factors - the struggle for sales, advertisements, a new title, and the hard work by the staff - have brought forth one ultimate achievement: your yearbook, The Gryphon, 1956. STUDENT COUNCIL On December 16, 1955, under the direction of the advisor, Miss Daily, the Student Council, which is the governing body of the school, held its first elec- tions of ofiicers. Some of the activities of the council were: arranging a calendar of events, supplying music for the cafeteria by appealing to the homerooms for records, and selling candy after school. The Constitu- tion for the school was composed by these students and reviewed by all student clubs. Certainly, these elected members of the Student Council are to be commended for their unselfish sacrifice during every assembly period, when they held their meetings, thus missing the assemblies. 12th GRADE DELEGATES First Row, l. to r.: L. WRESTLING For the first time in the history of the Warwick School system, a sport new to the students was introduced. Under the capable coaching of Mr. Edmund Jusczyk, the team had a fair season. Most of the participants were undergraduates, so the experience gained will be very valuable in the future years. 1- Mr Cravnle I-locke ' Mr jusczyk W' Rathbun' A110355 A' , 4 ' V.
